Welcome to Part 4 in my 10 part series on the original works of David Lynch! These videos will discuss the themes of Lynch's original works, starting with Eraserhead and ending finally with Twin Peaks: The Return.
In this installment of The Postmodern Condition, we discuss the original series of Twin Peaks, seasons 1 and 2. This installment is being split into multiple parts due to technical limitations.
This video, Part 1 of my Twin Peaks analysis, will give an overview for the show and lay out some themes I'll discuss, and then we'll proceed to talk about the significance of Laura's death as well as some of the themes of darkness of Twin Peaks. In upcoming videos, we'll discuss themes of existentialism, cultural critique of America, themes of gender and class, as well as meta themes. Stay tuned for more discussion of Twin Peaks!

It warms my black heart to see young folks engaging so intensely with Twin Peaks, and not just because 90s nostalgia is fashionable right now. Here is a question I have not thought through completely but I’m just tossing it out there: Twin Peaks itself is obviously steeped in nostalgia, not so much for the 50s as people might think, but more for the Kennedy-era New Frontier, which looks and feels a lot like the 50s, but includes more suspicions or at least awareness of what Kennedy’s political allies called the Military-Industrial complex. I think Lynch’s original point of view comes from that time and place-remember, Twin Peaks began as a possible retelling of the story of Marilyn Monroe’s murder. I believe Lynch has done a lot of thinking/meditating/ruminating about nostalgia, and the way that nostalgia allows us to kind of exist in two different and discreet times/places at once. I wonder how that fits with Twin Peaks’ exploration of simultaneous and not always compatible multiple narratives, perspectives, and stories. Just a thought-

I’ve been saving these videos for when I finally got around to finishing Twin Peaks as I’ve always loved your work, and now I finally have finished it (I always bounced off the back half of season 2…)! Is Part 3 of this available anywhere? It seems to have vanished (copyright bots, I presume).

it's not available right now, im hoping to maybe just publish the script for part 3 as an article since re-making the video would be really difficult and would probably get struck down by bots, for now it's gonna have to be a missing piece (no pun intended)

yea, i already did a video (in parts) on the return and plan to do another for this series. i'm doing most of his original work in order so when i'm done with these twin peaks videos i'll do fire walk with me, then lost highway through inland empire, then the return at the end

A very good analysis. I always wonder whether Leland was completely possessed by Bob or was he self-aware when he committed those crimes, and I really agree with your interpretation that Leland was an evil person to begin with, that's why Bob chose him to escalate his evilness even further.

Love 21 jumpstreet Interesting to parallel it against twin peaks i usually go to northern exposure both weird small town shows northern exposure basically is just weird enough to be slightly different from the norm. Typical tv maybe less typical since it was basically a teen soap opera in prime time on a brand new network fox long before teen dramas were a thing Twin peaks on abc going up against the must see Thursday night tv lineup of nbc and doing something rather original Enjoying your analysis. Might wanna slow the pacing down. I’m not trying to be mean but you talk really fast.
