In this video I explain how to set up headphone mixes in UA's Console 2.0 software. This was an issue that took me some time to get my head around & a problem I know I wasn't the only person to have. Hopefully this video explains the best way to set up a headphone mix.

There are really many people who have the same problem, you really help them. so thx again. have a nice day! cheers from switzerland.

Thanks for the great tutorial on this subject. I also have 2 Apollo 8P interfaces and have a live room for my tracking of drums. I usually send the mix ( monitor 1-2) to my Presonus headphone amp and adjust that mix with a Ipad that sees the Protools mixer. I hear my drums and balance the incoming mix in my headphones. Don't think I'm doing this right. I will try your suggestion with the virtual channels. Any help would be great. Thanks

Great video. Wondering if this might be redundant as you can just send right to the console cue outputs from Logic. not sure why you need to use virtual channels to get the drums guitars and bass into the console if you are just eventually sending them to cue outputs anyways. You still have total control by grouping tracks in Logic and sending straight out. That way you can save your virtual inputs into console for CPU(Itunes/Spotify) and even output Logic Stereo 1-2 into Console to always have Logic's mix a fader away in Console. Just some thoughts..
@tastethemusic2696
@tastethemusic2696 4 года назад
You can set up headphone mixes in many ways, it depends on your work flow hey. I choose to use the Console software because It feels more like using a traditional mixing console. Using the virtual channels means I can set up dedicated reverb sends & route to multiple headphone sends, use the UA plug ins within the console software and avoid overloading my computer & even go as afar as mixing within console & bouncing the mix down to the DAW. Console is basically a virtual mixing console, so I use it that way 👍, but doesn't mean you can set up your headphone mixes within your DAW

@Marz_e_

Great video thanks. +Taste The Music is this is essentially set up as a sends and returns set up just like a real console? Would you mute the input section (Sends to DAW/Tape) of the console 2.0 when tracking and just monitor over at the virtual instruments section (Returns from DAW/Tape) of console 2.0?
@tastethemusic2696
@tastethemusic2696 6 лет назад
Sorry for late reply here. Yes when tracking you mute in Logic / DAW to avoid hearing the signal twice. Apollo monitors in real time with no latency so you don't need to hear the signal via Logic.
@FlyboyBankz
@FlyboyBankz 8 лет назад
as in tracking< would yu buss them to the ua console to while tracking? because i want my artist to be able to hear there vocal take right after they do it so they know to keep or cut
@tastethemusic2696
@tastethemusic2696 6 лет назад
Here is my process. My track will be routed via Virtual outputs in order for the singer to hear the track. The vocals are monitored via the Apollo unit anyway. Once recorded you can play back the take immediately & start to comp it, but bear in mind the vocal will most likely be routed via the stereo output as default whilst the rest of the track is monitored via virtual outputs. This isn't a problem as long as you are aware of the level differences between the virtual faders in Console & the output faders in Logic, and be careful when switching back from Virtual to Stereo outputs as you could have a big jump up or down in volume.
@godbear6241
@godbear6241 7 лет назад
Thanks so much, I just wanna know how to be able to listen to your monitor mix while tracking the cues in virtual tracks as you did! since you are outputing all your daw tracks to virtual tracks, how can they go to the output 1 & 2 monitors for speakers as well?
@tastethemusic2696
@tastethemusic2696 6 лет назад
When you route a signal via a Virtual Instrument, that Virtual instrument channel can be monitored in various places. The main channel faders monitor your L&R mix whilst the Cue mix faders monitor the Cue mixes which can be routed in the Cue Mix section. So if you break your mix down over Virtual instruments you can mix each section through your main stereo monitors using the virtual instrument faders. You can then do a separate mix for each of the Cue mixes you have set up. You can also select if you want to hear the main stereo mix or any of the Cue mixes, this is helpful when setting up a headphone mix in another room as you can do a rough mix prior to your musician arriving. I also like to hear the cue mix sometimes if I have a singer who is struggling to pitch, without them realising it the mix might be effecting how they sing. So if I have a musician who is struggling ill always listen the their mix and maybe tweak subtly without them realising to try & make them feel more comfortable. Hope that helps

Soooo in order to hear any playback in general after recording, you MUST set up virtual tracks to do so? I have Apollo Twin MkII and Logic Pro x. I can't hear any playback (instrumental or vocal) I'm feeling frustrated. It's taken me like 5 days to learn this console and I'm still confused after countless videos.
@tastethemusic2696
@tastethemusic2696 4 года назад
Don't panic, I know it will seem daunting to begin with, but honestly its quite simple when you get used to it. In essence console acts like a traditional mixing desk would, that probably doesn't help if you have never used a mixer, but let me try and help. If you think of Console as a piece of software sitting between your DAW (Logic) and the mic, so if you plug your mic into channel 1 on your Twin, it will come into channel 1 in console. Here you can add your +48volts, HPF, Phase and add plug ins. Most importantly is the Unison slot at the top, here you can add "Mic Pre emulations", you must do this and within the emulation plug in ensure you have sufficient gain . In Logic you must then set the channel input to receive from UA Twin channel 1, record enable the channel and hit record. So thats your signal then coming into Logic To hear (monitor) that signal there are a number of ways. In my video here I demonstrate the use of the Virtual channels in console. What you need to understand here is that on a traditional mixing desk your signal on tape (or DAW) is routed to a channel on the desk, here it can be mixed with other channels and sent out to headphones etc. Console is the same but virtual. If you set the out put of your track to a virtual instrument channel you will see it come into console on that Virtual Instrument channel, from here you can send it to the headphones using the Cue mix in that Virtual Instrument channel. Once you get used to it you can send multiple tracks to various Virtual Instruments and start to build headphone mixes with full control. Lets say your recording a vocal Plug your mic into the Twin on channel 1 In console under channel 1 insert a unison mic pre (you will have a free one if you haven't purchased any, probably the UA 610) If needed add +48V phantom power Turn up some gain in the plug in or on the Twin interface (both do the same job of turning up the gain) Now open a new channel in Logic, set the input to channel 1 and the out put to Virtual Instruments 1 (or VI 1&2 if you prefer stereo) In console click on the name TAB of Virtual Instrument 1 and name it vocal for your reference. Plug your headphones into the front of the Twin In console on the right hand side select 'Cue Outputs' here you can set Cue 1 to send to HP, which is the headphone output on the front of your Twin Ensure speakers are turned off through this whole process to avoid feedback Now talk into the mic, you will A)see signal come into console channel 1, here you can add gain etc 2, Record enable in Logic and you should see signal coming into Logic 3, Because Logic is sending out to Virtual Instrument 1 you should see level in console in Virtual Instrument 1 Now, in the Cue section of VI 1 turn up cue 1 to hear the signal in your headphones I promise its actually very simple when you get used to it, I have taught this to many over the years (I teach in a uni) and once you get the hang of it you will never look back. I hope this helps PS, I don't work for UA 😂😂

+Taste The Music I agree, I'm currently routing my mix through my Presonus Central Station and use that for talkback ..I've spent hours trying to figure out ways to setup a mix and monitor setup. The way you've described here works but it doesn't allow for talkback.. How are you doing it?
@tastethemusic2696
@tastethemusic2696 8 лет назад
+Paul Gigliati I use a Persons Monitor Station V2, its a simplified version of what you have. If you take your L&R sends from your apollo & run them into your PreSonus that will immediatly sort control room monitoring. For Headphone mixes you need to run the subsequent channels through the Persons unit, this will then act as a headphone amplifier for the musicians & will also enable talkback. The way I do it is as follows Apollo L&R into Pre sonus 1&2 Apollo 1&2 into Pre sonus 3&4 Now my pre songs unit can take my Apollo L&R & act as the monitor control over these signals, I can change volume, select speakers, mute, mono etc etc My Persons is also sending the Apollo 1&2 cue sends into a headphone mix which will work with talkback. The only down side to using the presonus is that it will only except 2 stereo inputs, with 1 of these being used for monitoring it means you only have 1 available headphone mix (which can be sent to multiple musicians), you can have other mixes using the headphone sends on the Apollo unit but it will mean no talk back on that headphone mix Only way around this and having talkback on multiple channels is to invest in a more powerful monitor control unit which excepts more inputs. Or you simplify the track mixes & send the same mix to each musician & give them a volume pot on the end of the XLR cable which they will ply headphones into, then they can all hear talkback & have a personal volume control over the mix, they just all have to live with the same mix. All only relevant if you are tracking multiple musicians at any one though
@paulgigliottimusic
@paulgigliottimusic 8 лет назад
+Taste The Music I see what your saying but that doesn't work for my setup. My main LR is going to My CS. All the rest of my Apollo outs are sent to my Dangerous 2bus.
@tastethemusic2696
@tastethemusic2696 8 лет назад
+Paul Gigliati Basically if you want talk back you need to send the signal going to the headphones through a system which will allow talk back, or you need to run a designated talk back mic into your apollo which will use up a channel (Not ideal for tracking with lots of mics when you might need that channel)
