Marshmallows have long been a beloved treat, finding their way into s'mores, hot cocoa, and various desserts around the world. However, traditional marshmallows contain gelatin, an animal-derived ingredient made from collagen extracted from the skin, bones, and connective tissues of animals like cows and pigs. This poses a challenge for those who follow a vegan lifestyle or have dietary restrictions, leading to the rise of vegan marshmallows as a delightful and cruelty-free alternative.
Vegan marshmallows typically use plant-based alternatives to gelatin, such as agar-agar or carrageenan, to achieve the desired texture. These ingredients are derived from seaweed and provide the necessary binding properties to create fluffy, pillowy marshmallows. Other key components include sugar, corn syrup or tapioca syrup, water, and natural flavors, which come together to give vegan marshmallows their sweet and slightly chewy consistency.
