My grandkids (7, 10 & 13) wouldn’t believe me when I told them how to use counter steer on their pushbikes. I suspect many motorbike riders are a bit unsure about it too. The spinning wheel is a great explanation tool. Good job mate.

cheers mate, yeah it seems to be clearing up some confusion for many of my riding buddies as well.

You suspect correctly. We do this demonstration in my local advanced riding groups at the start of each new course. We get the new associates to hold the spinning wheel and give it a forward push in one direction or the other. For a lot of them this is positively eye-opening.

@@NooBiker thats cool, yeah it is one of those things that don't make sense in words, you have to see and feel it to realise how it works.

I understand the concept. For those that don't, it may be difficult to understand from this video. Please explain which side of the hub you were applying pressure, it wasn't obvious.

yeah might not be as clear as I'd hoped, we put arrows on the diagram to indicate direction .... basically the arrow is on the left side of the wheel and the press on the axle is away from the viewer towards me which turns the wheel to the right, hopefully that makes sense. Best thing is to grab a bicycle wheel and give it a spin and see how it responds to turns.

All nice and good that precession is given as a reason that countersteering is what turns a motorcycle (or actually any single track vehicle) but it's wrong, wrong, wrong. Countersteering causes the motorcycle to lean because it's an inverted pendulum. The effect of precession is much smaller.

Like I said in the video it is "one of the factors" and I agree that the inverted pendulum concept does apply too. It's not a matter of one or the other. However it's important to recognise that steering a bike onto a different plane when it is in the air such as in supercoss or motocross is the result of multiple factors including counter steering and the gyroscopic precession, there is no inverted pendulum in the air as the tyres don't touch anything yet it steers. What I am saying is they are both factors. The goal here was to make people aware that there are other forces at play.

Any single track vehicle on the ground is an inverted pendulum. It's not a concept, it's a fact. And a motorcycle in the air can't change directions laterally because no force is acting on it. You can change the direction it is pointed but the velocity stays in the vertical plane that it was in when it left the ground. You weren't paying attention in Physics 101.

@@TheBikeStig Could you explain why motor scooters with small and the smallest diameter front wheel are the far less stable when cornering at speed and can loose traction easily slipping out .Is it because the smallest wheel is spinning faster increasing gyroscopic force effect more or less compared to a slower spinning bigger diameter wheel at same "land travel" speed and then how to control these forces, many unsuspecting scooter riders fall .
