Great vid and clarification of the Otto Cycle and the interrelationship between temps, power, and combustion in a four cycle engine. There is no debate that controlling temps increases power and longevity. This is why even way back in the day they began using ADI on air-cooled aircraft engines (P&W R2800 -Think Hellcats, Corsairs, B26 etc).

It makes perfect sense to retard the timing when the CHT gets hot. The higher temperatures will get cylinder temperatures closer to the fuel's flash point and cause detonation. Not really sure that this was meant to help cool the engine as much as to save the engine from damage. I really like the idea that the rear cylinder shuts off at idle when hot, just pumping air. I will never understand why the manufacturer doesn't ensure air flow across the oil cooler and cooling fins with fans on an air cooled bike. Any serious touring rider knows that it's inevitable that you're going to get stuck in crawling traffic on the interstate with no place to pull over or if you do, be stuck somewhere for several hours because otherwise the engine wont have enough air flow to keep the engine from overheating. This is a known problem that the Harley seems to just refuse to address.

Hi guys! Recently, people aren’t talking about oil pumps and cam plates anymore as much as back then when the M8 engines were kinda problematic sumping wise. I was trying to find information about what cam chest is better for my 2021 FLFBS, and I’m starting to believe that as the OEM oil pump and cam plate are more prone to withstand bigger crankshaft runout, and there are people saying that the OEM cranks can shift and develop a runout, it would be safer to let it the way it is. What do you guys think about it? Cuz’ I’m feeling like in order to install an S&S or Fueling cam chest kit, only makes sense if you also install an aftermarket Crank with welded pinion etc. So my question is. Is it safe to install and S&S cam chest kit with a stock crank if my runout is ok or it’s prone to shift, developing a bigger runout and cause a major engine failure?
@DKCustomProducts
@DKCustomProducts 8 месяцев назад
Unlike the Twin Cams, the M8's do not have a tendency to shift. In fact, it is almost unheard of. Unless going to a large Stage IV upgrade we would not even consider needing to touch the crank. Off subject... I watched a video yesterday of a torn down 121 VVT. This new engine no longer uses external head breathers. They now vent it from the transmission cover. No more head breathers. Not sure how they route the escaped vapors. Are you aware of this? I would assume that your breather system can be adapted. Back on topic: it would be nice if HD put a head and oil temp gauge on their bikes. Many of us don't use aftermarket tuners. Thanks and another great video :-)
@DKCustomProducts
@DKCustomProducts 8 месяцев назад
Thank you for the comment. Glad you are liking the vids. Yeah, HD used to show the oil and engine temps, oil pressure too. As the bikes have gotten hotter they have stopped easily displaying that info. We have a 121 VVT on order, supposed to arrive early next month and we will begin digging into it to see what can and can't be done.

I have stock oil cooler and fan, PLUS luv jugs mighty mites, 2” lift kit with 1” rear lift on tank. I have @340-360 still according to ET on PV, HT runs @16° to 22° higher then ET… NOW!!! What if I got say digital Dakota head, temp meters and put them on where would the best place be to read the hottest temperature of the bike? I have an M8 would it be on the clutch side take out the spark plugs put the connector on there or the washer ring for the meter to read or would it be better to take the tank off and put them in the center for the front and rear and will they get a better reading off of that for head temperature forward that also be considered engine temperature to?
@DKCustomProducts
@DKCustomProducts 8 месяцев назад
340-360 is still far too hot. You don't say which year and model M8 you have, but it may benefit from a better oil cooler, or a second one. See video on that here- ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-M9ta84TmROc.html If you have not done anything to the engine (still all OEM) then you may want to check to make sure you are not sumping. That is really hot for a stock engine that has a tank lift and love jugs. Here is a video on sumping- ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-aavpk4ro8WQ.html Also, some Cooling Deflector Wings will help cool it down. You can see them here- www.dkcustomproducts.com/cooling-deflector-wings-for-touring-trike-models-dk-cdw-trg.htm As well as an EBS. Here is a video of 10 low and no cost things you can do to cool it down- ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-o3T3yA9BKwE.html We have consistently seen the Dakota Digital temp readings be inaccurate. Not sure why, but we have seen enough to know they cannot be trusted. The best temp sensor is the one HD puts in the rear cylinder (on an M8) and that is what is displayed on your PV as the ET. I see normal operating temps of 325 (ET) on winter days 30° and below and can reach 340 (ET) on 90° days. I've never felt any drop in power of my bike. I have seen all your guys videos and it does have me concerned. I ride my bike daily and know it very well in this configuration for a year and half with 12k put on in that time. My bike is a 2018 m8 w/ ss475 and I did change the oil pump and have confirmed no sumping, with a fuel moto map. I have an engine oil temp gauge and it always reads between 195-212° which are normal. I do not know which end of the wagon to board on this subject.
@DKCustomProducts
@DKCustomProducts 8 месяцев назад
That is much too hot for an ET. That is great on the oil temp...ideal temp for the oil. I would wonder if the heat sensor that is sending the ET temp to the ECM and PV is defective? If that really is the temp (not defective), it is not surprising they you do not feel a drop in power. As you can see in the charts in the following video, the power line is still very smooth and normal, it is just lower than it would be if the temp was not too hot. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-MF0hO-w2hz8.html Your question spurred a thought that we need to do a video on this very subject....one will not necessarily feel the drop, when crossing 270 F. Because it is still a smooth powerband, as shown in the video above. If you are riding for an hour or more and you oil temps are staying below 220 F, the first thing I would check is the OEM heat sensor...actually, before swapping the sensor, I would make sure the wire connections are clean and apply some dielectric grease to see if that changes anything. If you are not riding at least an hour, then you oil temp has not caught up with the Engine Temp, and does not mean much. Always feel free to email or call with any questions. @hoodrat2hunt, do you have lowers installed on your bikes engine guard. My 2018 roadglide 107 records engine temps of 30 degrees lower if I remove them. They are just added on, not the kind that water cooled engines have. I have tried this experiment a couple of times . With lowers on temp is around 315. With them off, 280 to 285.
