Twenty-year-old Naomi Osaka beat Serena Williams in a U.S. Open final that took an emotional turn after the umpire penalized Williams for three violations. After the tense match, there were boos from the crowd. In that moment, Osaka tells TODAY, she was “a little bit sad,” saying, “I wasn’t sure if they were booing at me.”

I agree, Jeremy. She s so young but smart & mature beyond her age!(^^). Serena was her IDOL for all her life, so she's not about say anything negative about her. I think her parents have been doing a great job raising her being sensible & sensitive on tricky, messy situations. (^^)

@@knobed138 That was so unnecessary things to say about Serena. In case you don't know, NAOMI loves Serena... respecting & idealizing her for so many years, NAOMI will hate to see YOUR comment....calling her "Chimp". That's so rude!! 1 other viewer joined you with the disgusting comment about Serena & again, NAOMI would feel sad seeing that. I'm sure she feels she can do without the fans like you guys.

Please remember that the crowd didn't really know or understand what was going on or why there was a game penalty, etc. They were booing because an "outside influence" (as in other than the match) robbed them of a wonderful match that cost them a ton of money to watch. Love Naomi and Serena!

Hi Diana, On the upside for her though, she just got 10x more exposure than she would have by just winning. And managed to be the only one who came out looking good from every angle. At 20 years old in her career this will probably work out very well for her with a big boost in her profile, extra sponsorship, extra fans, extra appearance fees etc.

Brad Rawiszer Serena has always been a bit of a sore “loser,” although she is the absolute best Lol. She loses her temper easily. No wonder Venus always looks disinterested when playing Serena. I think, as the older sister, she considers Serena’s feelings. In this match against Naomi, there was time for Serena to let the heat die between her and the umpire but, nooooo, she just had to keep it going when she sat back down, which led to that “verbal abuse” penalty.

Naomi you handled this most unfortunate situation with a grace and humbleness.THIS WAS HER DREAM TO PLAY HER IDOL SERENA AT THE US OPEN FINAL. Sadly, Serena, the crowd and the disgraceful comment by Katrina Adams "Perhaps this was not the finish we were looking for today". utterly spoiled Naomi's moment. Can you imagine? Naomi just achieved her dream and she should have been celebrated, not booed. Even with all those insulting comments and bad behavior by Serena, the crowd and Katrina Adams, Naomi apologized for winning because she knew if she were in the stand she would've been rooting for Serena. I am glad to see so many Americans and non-Americans applauding for Naomi's grace. So THANK YOU! Can someone please tell me name(s) of Grand Slam champions from the past who won unexpectedly against the crowd's favorite player and ended up being treated this poorly and yet somehow managed to be so humble and still respectful towards the crowd and the sore loser? Serena is one of the players known to have bad temper on court. She used the F word towards one of the line's people at the US open 2009, and got fined for that. This umpire called her for verbal abuse because Serena kept berating him and wouldn't let go. No, Serena didn't use curse words but it was how Serena kept verbally abusing the umpire "You owe me an apology" " Say you are sorry" " You will never work on one of matches". I don't think I was only one who was cringing as Serena acted like a bully. When it was all said and done at the press conference, Serena had turned this into gender inequality issue. Serena, if you act even remotely like how classy Chris Evert was, situations like this would never happen in the first place. You are a legend and little kids look up to you so please practice self restrain a little.I'm Japanese and we were taught to be humble and gracious from childhood. Her mother clearly kept the tradition. Naomi even thanked the crowd for watching and thanked Serena for playing and took a bow. HOW SO JAPANESE OF HER! BTW: Naomi completely outplayed Serena, just saying.

These liberal biased nuts are trying to create news and Naomi didn’t fall for it. Naomi’s honesty is very evident, because she has been interviewed few times now and her answers didn’t change. No matter how they are presented to her, her answers are the same. Hope she doesn’t become another arrogant brad like the one she just defeated. Do you see? When good character is present, nationally, race, skin color, gender, are all irrelevant. She is a beautiful skillful human being! Hope success doesn’t destroy her!

Fact one, Osaka kicked Serena’s behind in the Miami Open dominantly and Serena then found out Osaka is actually also half Haitian so played the sexist card which is also a fail since this ref also penalized Nadal and Federer before and is known to be strict!

Roberta Vinci apologized to the crowd for beating Queen Serena in the U.S. Open semifinal a few years ago. Seems every time the Queen loses, somebody feels the need to apologize. That's because people have the Queen so high up on a pedestal. Apparently, all the winning she's done isn't enough for them. They want her to win *every* match. News flash: There's over 120 other extremely talented and eager women entered into the main draw of any given Grand Slam tournament. Personally, l hope Serena Williams never wins another Grand Slam championship, especially after what happened on Saturday. Whenever the utterly egocentric Williams realizes she's about to lose in a major tournament, she creates a distraction, an excuse. She's been like that throughout her career.

Congrats Naomi on a dominant performance! Her victory was over-shadowed by a very disappointing temper tantrum, from an amazing athlete who had clearly put some extreme pressure on herself. Serena clearly wanted to accomplish her goal of winning this Grand Slam months after having a baby, to show that world that she's the prototype for women's empowerment. Even without winning, what Serena accomplished this year was amazing. However, there's no excuse for her actions. I mean, she just wouldn't let it go. I thought the Umpire was very measured, given Serena's disgusting public display. The predictable cheering from the crowd and the media (even booing) at the post-match conference is what really bothers me. Osaka was amazing and we should not be celebrating anything that Serena did, even if she believes it was in the name of women's empowerment. It's not okay to use a manufactured social injustice as an excuse for a public temper tantrum over losing, regardless of the stakes. Which is exactly why the crowd, the media, and the fans should be correcting Serena, by not supporting her over-the-top antics. This should be used as a teaching moment for the promotion of unselfishness, NOT anti-misogyny.

Imagine achieving the biggest goal of ur life...tht u put so much of blood ,sweat and tears into...and after ur finally there...u look up to the sky...and raise ur arms and smile...ur thinking everyone in the world will appreciate you.love you, admire you...and just then you feel a rotten egg thrown at you...followed by many more of the same...and these are the same people you set out to prove your worth to...the same "everyone".... They just wanted to see someone else, someone undeserving, at ur place...ur worth, ur efforts mean nothing to them. They just want to see what they want to see... What happened to miss Osaka.. was a true tragedy and I feel so strongly about the situation becoz I can relate that kind of sturggle.. to be the best... If I ever become the best musician in the world..will this follow? Really depressing

I hope Serena loses all of her endorsements. She lied about the coaching; smashed her racquet and called Ramos a thief. The only thief was Serena stealing this beautiful moment from this beautiful young woman. Naomi didn't come out of nowhere - she destroyed Serena in Miami earlier this year and had her number. She was up 6-2 over Serena who then lost it. Turning it into a women's right issue is a vast stretch. Ramos has called put men players for far less - do a search on "Djokovic and Ramos" on YT.

I follow the tour and my wife and I have always disliked Osaka (she can bug). As a #1 Serena fan since 1997 I couldn't stand her beating Serena with Sasha as her coach 😠. I stood with my hero even when Serena said she would shove a tennis ball down the lineswomans F******* throat. I didn't even bat an eye through ANY of her controversies.
