This and tritone subs. You will find this is all forms of gospel: southern, old-school black, gospel-rock, modern urban/contemporary gospel, even 80s-90s contemporary Christian used them. I'm gonna sprinkle these in next Sunday. lol
The gospel folks call this backcycling. It’s like ii V I, but going the other way around the circle, moving by 4ths instead of 5ths, you get bVII IV I. If you extend it, you get the interlude from A Day in the Life.
Backcycling! What a cool term :) never heard that before but makes perfect sense. How do you choose between a 2-5-1 and approaching it from the 4ths side?
I don’t even play jazz, but I love these videos. Something so soothing about the way you guys talk between beats, plus the theory gives me a tonne to think about
Those were some of the most beautifully played chord progressions ever, seriously. Both of you guys have such graceful techniques with your instruments. And of course the voice leading on the piano is fantastic too!
I watch this video just after playing with the fourhts cycle ! This feels so good, going from dark to light. You can also alternate between major and minor, this is so much fun !
I would like to see more of Adam rocking his Bill Evans look with the glasses. That Adam Manness has a completly different attitude in his playing... And boy its no joke...
except i'm just noticing on a 2nd loop, why did y'all use an ewan mcgregor gif when "...always." is a classic sir alec line as anyone on this channel is old enough to have known... :(
Beginner pianist here. This is so musical! And it’s something I can play! But I bet you are making different voicing choices. Wish I knew more about that.
He’s using minors going to the Am and majors to the C. The minors are all the relative minors to the majors he’s using. Look at a diagram of the circle of 5ths(which are also 4ths depending what direction you go) and it will make sense.
Happy 4th gang light and love, you inspire me to get to the keys and instruments so often. Thank you for your extraordinary contributions to music education on and off RU-vid. I’m confused with the 4ths arrows. Shouldn’t it be a 5th from G-7 to D-7 etc? We move back a fourth and back a fourth and then have a stack of 5ths right? A fourth above is a 5th below?
You could think of it going up by 5ths! Going up a 5th from G-7 gets you to D-7. But going down a 4th from G-7 also gets you to D-7. Does that help? :)
