About the one handed fireballs, Oro just became an even bigger legend in my eyes. Dude throws casual plasma out of his finger and if he uses 2 hands it's a goddamn spirit bomb
I think In the lore him and Akuma are the same on power levels, they fought for like a hundred days and they said they’d just kill each other so they stopped
@@whirl3690 So sick. I always forget he's just beating everyones ass with one arm. Even cooler, he switches the side of the amputation as needed for combat
Some fun etymology and details of some characters: Ryu's name in Japanese literally means "Dragon". Sagat practices a style of Muay Thai themed after tigers (a reference to Thai mythology). In Chinese folklore dragons and tigers are considered rivals, representing opposing sides of Yin and Yang (crouching tiger, hidden dragon). The Japanese word "Ryūko" (龍虎) is assembled from the characters for tiger (虎) and dragon (龍) and literally means "fierce rivals". The Japanese word for fist is "Ken". Ryu (the dragon) has stronger fireballs, while Ken (the fist) has stronger uppercuts. Dan's uppercut "Koryuken" (晃龍拳, or "Brilliant Dragon Fist") is clearly based off of the Shoryuken (rising dragon fist), but the animation is visiually closer to Sagat's "Tiger Uppercut". The Japanese kanji for tiger "虎" can be pronounced both as "とら" (tora) or "こ" (ko). Because 晃 and 虎 are pronounced the same, you could interpret koryuken as meaning "tiger dragon fist" which is roughly equivalent to "Ryūko no Ken" (Fist of Fierce Rivals). This would not only be a reference to Dan's one-sided rivalry with Sagat (possibly copying the move from Sagat as a means to defeat him), but also a reference to "Art of Fighting", which is known as "Ryūko no Ken" in Japan.
Eh, Haoh and Shinku Gadoken show how strong they COULD be, but because he abandoned his training, Dan will always be bad. (Fun fact, Dan's Dankukyaku, his version of the Tatsumaki Senpukyaku, references the Hien Shippu Kyaku, which is another move that Ryo, Robert, and Takuma (Ryo's dad) use.)
I slowed down Remy's Super I and noticed that the final stage has three projectiles come from one hand. THREE PROJECTILES FROM ONE HAND. Forget Oro's massive/lock on Projectile and everyone who can do one handed projectiles. This Edge Lord is far more powerful than anyone wants to give credit for.
In 3rd Strike Oro has red eyes like Akuma but they also glint blue, implying that he has mastery of both Satsui no Hado and the power of nothingness and relies on both simultaneously, which in turn hints that the ideal state of mind for fighting is a cohesion of both, this is reinforced by Gill's theme of opposing forces working together. I absolutely love this detail about 3rd strike, it has real merit concerning competitive games like this and other types of competitions, basically keeping a clear head makes it easier to analyze and see what's going on but having the drive to win is just as important.
Oro's art is called "senjutsu", which is supposedly one of the most advanced and rigorous techniques to learn. He also has incredibly advanced knowledge and mastery of ki, which grants him the ability to use basically any form of hado or other fireball magic he likes, as they all derive from the same source. I entirely agree on your other point, though. Naturally I play at my worst when I'm angry and distracted and better when I'm calm and focused, but I arguably play at my best when I'm "dry angry" and in this proper state of focused bloodlust. I even used the same satsui no hado + mu no ken analogy when I came up with this a few years back.
One thing I think that's also interesting is that a big joke with Dan is that lorewise, he has the possibility to be the strongest fighter in history. He can even use the Satsui no Hadou like Ryu can according to the comics. This is why he one hands fireballs- he has the potential to be an incredible martial artist. Too bad he's an idiot.
I like to think he actually puts in a lot of work he just applies himself wrong. I think his dads was probably a really good teacher he’s just too stupid to get anything from it.
In SFV they took this concept a step further by having Dan’s “copied” moves be bad, but making unique moves really good. Implying that if Dan actually committed to his own style he’d be incredibly strong.
it should also be noted that Dan has so many taunt and a super taunt option because that's the most direct jab at the art of fighting and its mechanics. In the art of fighting games you would loose meter to you opponent taunting, they'd loose meter on frame one so there was no punishment for doing that (though i can't remember if you can cancel them)
Their themes are also parallels of each other’s. If you play the two together in sync they form a new song. This is generally hard to notice because akumas actual theme only plays in arcade mode. He gets a weird sf4 remix in vs battles.
It feels like Dan tried to skip straight to master level with his fireballs, partly because he wanted to rush to get revenge, and partly because his training was cut short by Gouken. Sakura is an example of someone trying to learn the Shoto arts the right way, and succeeding at it.
Exactly. Even though Dan just started off purely as a riff on Ryo and Robert, as his story filled out you can tell they worked details like this into his story.
@That Frosty Ape Dan's father's name is Go Hibiki ;) That recollection of his background is otherwise on point though. Another very likely reason he throws fireballs with one hand is indicative of his personality: because he has a delusional level of self confidence. If throwing fireballs with one hand is a sign of further mastery of them (as is evidenced by almost every canonically top tier character throwing them one-handed), it makes sense that Dan would think himself above using two hands. His inflated sense of self worth doesn't allow him to see that his fireballs are trash because of it haha. It's totally "Dan" to think that he can jump right into one-handed fireballs and skip the basics, because that's basically what Saikyou-ryu is; Dan has the base of Go Hibiki's fighting style that he was taught from a young age, but otherwise he essentially added Ansatsuken and Muay Thai to Saikyou-ryu without actually having any technical mastery of even the basics. He's just mimicking what he's seen. Adding techniques to your style can totally make it better, but not when you don't actually know how to do those techniques properly haha.
@@sadowolf This is totally unrelated to sf and videogames in general but I am gonna use this analysys of yours to point out that the consequences of overconfidence are preferable to those of not having confidence specially if you are a warrior, or a soldier, or anything that might put your life on the line.
Also, Sean. I know everyone thinks Sean is a joke from 3S, but if you compare Sean to Alpha or SF4 Sakura, they're actually pretty similar in terms of skill
I like how as the games progress, Chun-Li goes from no fireball, to a moderate one, to a stronger-ish one. But I can't remember if she ever gets full screen...
not full screen, but covering about 25% of the screen with a violent surging orb. Kikosho is her single most powerful technique. i think most of her range is curved in an arc purposefully through her technique. she can slip past longer range fighters like vega and sagat and counter/ cross up by mixing her fast attacks with her elusive aerial abilities. i dont think maxing linear range is part of her plan anywhere near as much as arcs and angles.
@Aran Ryan No. Oro has two arms. He binds his dominant arm with a magic spell that he can break at any time so his opponents have a fighting chance and make things interesting. He has more powerful "unleashed" versions of his supers have him use both arms if you use two punch buttons on the input instead of one.
On the topic of Dan's fireballs, it's simply because he has poor form, not because he's a weak hado user. Dan has THE most powerful (Uncharged) basic fireballs out of the the entire cast (With a damage of 70 over the average 60). The fact that they dissipate due to poor form can be surmised from Oni's fireballs dissipating: Oni is Akuma overcome with violent intent, and therefore doesn't think as much during a fight. If anything, Dan might (potentially) be the most powerful hado user, unless what he's doing is substituting range for power in his fireballs without realizing, although Oni's fireballs still only hit for 60 damage. In either case, he's up to snuff when it comes to weird energy abilities.
RoosterCogburnPhD nah he definitely has the weakest hado, he can't even sustain the satsui no hado after tripping over a *b a c k p a c k* Also the base damage for a fireball is 70 (i.e. Ryu and Ken), not 60
I actually think that might have to do more with his outlook on life rather than any form of weakness. The Satsui no Hado in the comics (Where this happens) is less of something just Ryu and Akuma have its something *everyone* Has, Sakura uses a it a bit, Its implied Sagats scar kinda gives him a similar hate boost. Dan is too goofy to actually sustain that hateful outlook. (At least, that's partly how the comics portrayed it.) Dan had potential he wasted. I mean his dad was the guy who took out Sagat's eye. Dans father was probs stronger then Alpha Ryu
season 5 of SFV added a bicycle kick to Ken's moves, which shows us where Sean got it from. Obviously, he could also have learned from Laura but we all know he abandoned her Jiu Jitsu in favor of Ken's version of Ansatsuken. Speaking of kicks, it's interesting to see how Sakura and Sean have adapted the tatsumaki technique for themselves. Sean has a much easier time staying airborne but has to use both legs in order to hit the opponent multiple times while Sakura can score multiple hits while barely staying airborne and sometimes even doing so on the ground so she can do more damage, as seen with her SFIV super. This might be due to their difference in martial arts training before learning Ansatsuken, since Sean was already learning Jiu Jitsu and Sakura knew nothing of martial arts prior to getting to know Ryu
Ken's bicycle kick originates from CvS2, btw. So Ken debuted with it first technically speaking. Im not sure if CvS2 is canon to SF storyline, but the fact that the move first appears there is something to note
@@DanielReyes-kv8ek CVS2 is a "dream battle" as the announcer mentions during the character select screen and some of the transition screens, it is not canon
That's a good comparison. How I see it is that Sean (in SF3) and Sakura (in SF4) are actually equally skilled. However, the difference is their strengths and weaknesses. Sean has power-he does know some Matsuda Jiu-Jutsu (which is largely grappling), and his overall damage is actually pretty good, even in 3S. The problem is that Sean lacks technique. He can't properly do a Tatsu, he has to use brute force with both legs to stay airborne. Sakura is the opposite. Neither she or Sean have formal training, but Sakura learned directly from Ryu. Her weakness is strength. She's not as physically strong, both due to small size and inexperience. As such, she can do a proper Tatsu, but the lack of strength means she can't stay airborne as long. Another example is their Hadokens. Sean can't consistently do a Hadoken, but when he does, it's always powerful (a super). Sakura can do a consistent Hadoken, but it's weaker than Ryu’s because it dissipates.
If Dan’s Japanese dialogue is on, he’ll scream out “Saikyoryu-ougi!” in the same way that all of the Kyokugen fighters in AOF / KOF will scream out “Kyokugenryu-ougi!” when they do said super. Another fun poke at SNK
Gen moves was transferred in part to Yun and Yang, especially yang who took it more to heart but Yun stylized his own, I think it is in the comics that Gen is related to them or rather took them in to help in his restaurant
Yes, I felt that way too! Gen and Chun Li's dad trained together, I think they have all trained with one another at some point but I'll have to read up about their back stories again. Like you said I believe they hung out around the restaurant.
@@Choom89 Lee from the first game is their uncle and master. According to the World Warrior Encyclopedia, Lee was friends with Gen, which is probably why Yun & Yang know Chun-Li. Also, Rufus has a very similar fighting style to Yun & Yang (including a few shared moves), and it says in his bio he trained in China. Therefore, Rufus might be a student of Lee.
A fun fact: Akira Yuki from the Virtua Fighter series shares the fighting of Yun and Yang. Every move Akira has done can clearly be seen in Yun and Yang.
@@jme-james Akira Yuki in Virtua Fighter 2 predates Yun and Yang by several years in SF3, but they Yun definitely has moves of the same martial art, Ba Ji Quan
@@chrxnxmn7624 I thought I said that already? But Yun AND yang does moves Akira has already done. Akira does the double palm which the twins both do. Akira does the up kicks which both the twins do. Akira does the shoulder thing and You Hou, which Yun does. And alot of the normals the twin does looks like Akira's normals as well.
I think it's mentioned in the UDON comics when Charlie was teaching Guile to throw Sonic Booms that he noted Guile would never gain enough mastery to throw Sonic Booms one handed because of his bad temper. Guile didn't care and just adapted.
@@anarking5764 I say no because it being an install means it requires meter and is only temporary while Nash and Remy never need meter for one-handed booms. It's like how Sean in SF3 can only throw a hadouken as a Super. That's not mastery, that's pushing beyond your limits for a short minute.
Abel’s eyes change to something similar to Seth’s while performing Soulless, but his hits are kinda weak up until he gains control again and body slams the opponent his way.
It's not really a Fan theory Dan learned Muy Thai, he was taught by his father, Go Hibiki, who was a very strong fighter, and the one who Took Sagat's eye. That's why his style melds Shotokan and Muy thai, since he takes his incomplete teaching from Gouken and his father.
Seth's QCB K move has the same name as Chun Li's lightning kick, however he does it better than her(only to appear he kicked once but he actually kick multiple times extremely fast). Therefore we can assume that when Shadoloo was getting data for the Tanden Engine, they actually got Chun Li's dad who could do lightning legs that fast. And since Charlie is alive(or was alive) on SF5, it could be safe to say that Chun Li's dad is alive somewhere.
This is awesome, you really should keep going with videos like this. A lot of people in the FGC are quick to bark at people who give a shit about SF's lore, but it really can be interesting and it makes connecting to your main a lot more fun, at least in my opinion. Something I think is interesting; Ryu's normals and fireballs are so powerful because he is so synchronized with his own willpower. However, despite Dan's fireballs being so short-ranged, they actually do even greater damage than Ryu's, implying that perhaps Dan has an even stronger connection to his inner will. Take all this as you may.
I always wondered if the Seth/Abel/Gill/Urien connection was intentional or not. I never even picked up on the Vega and Dolls relationship, however. Dope video.
Ed and Menat are foils of eachother in terms of gameplay. Ed is conceptually easier to use while Menat isn’t. Ed borrows stuff from his Mentor Balrog (Such as Psycho Knuckle/Dash Straight, Psycho Swing/Turn Punch) while also mixing it up by pouring psycho power like Bison does, indicating a bit that he’s closer towards being corrupted by Bison since it’s shown in some material that Psycho power corrupts people the more they use it (It’s why Nash suspects that he along with his team should be exterminated, then again that might’ve been his rage talking). Menat in the other hand uses a unique style while borrowing stuff from Rose, her teacher while nothing indicates on any sort of corruption happening. Actually, Ed’s story is played more serious and depressing while Menats is played more light hearted.
Bafael: "In the Street Fighter universe, throwing fireballs with one hand is considered to be a very rare skill and indicative of martial arts mastery" Omega Ken: "Bro do you even?"
Meanwhile, Guile is in SFV throwing one handed booms, air booms, leg booms, big booms, sideways booms.. I guess Nash dying was the perfect opportunity for Guile to catch up
@@fortidogi8620 That's not taking into account the difference in power between a Hadoken and an Air Slasher. I assume Goken had to train for a long time and overcome the Hado in order to acquire multi-hit one handed fireballs. Deejay, on the other hand, probably has weaker fireballs lore wise
Corpse Senpai I’m starting to feel like Guile stole some of the moves Nash was supposed to get or sumthin. Ain’t Nash supposed to be the offensive and Guile defensive?
@@tcole2475 That's when, canonically, Charlie was more experienced than Guile. But, Charlie has been dead for a while, so it makes more sense for Guile to have more boom related tools than Charlie.
Always liked picking up these types of things across the SF series. When Dan first debuted he was a lot more of a subtle jab at Ryo and Robert, and even though he wasn't the best, he wasn't framed as an inferior joke character. By SF4 they were all in on it, and that's why he shares so many more similarities with them and it at his silliest. I haven't seen the video about him learning Muay Thai, but I remember even back to his debut noticing that his some of his kicks were more similar to Sagat's than other shotos, and the word was initially that Go Hibiki was a Muay Thai fighter like Sagat so that was Dan's base, and in order to separate himself from the art that led to his father's death he went to learn ansatsuken and was banished by Gouken because of his vengeful motives. The other theory was that his base was similar to the style of shotos (especially since the depictions of Go that would come out showed him wearing a gi like the shotos), and he learned Muay Thai along the way to pick up Sagat's techniques to better best him. In either scenario he was rejected by Gouken for his motives and used what he had learned there combined with some Muay Thai and his original karate base to ultimately create the Saikyou-Ryu.
i would love to see more of these kinds of lore videos. it would be nice to see a hub of sorts where we could actually establish timelines and events as a community. and i dont think i can think of a better place to do it than on your channel baf with how tight nit we all are.
Ryu’s Focus Attack isn’t exactly lore accurate due to timing, but it’s a reference to his Kaze no Ken technique he develops on the Ryu Final manga (which happens after 3S). It kinda breaks the lore but it’s a nice nod. The manga is sick btw, well worth reading.
Dan = Theorized to use Muay Thai to try and get revenge on Sagat. Adon = Uses Muay Thai to try and get revenge on Sagat for how hypocritical he was *Imagine the teamup of Dan and Adon.*
Wouldn't work. Both are massive egomaniacs wanting the spotlight with Dan being a goofy blowhard and Adon is arrogant and homicidal. They'd fight each other more than their opponents.
Unlikely, though. While both characters are incredibly arrogant, Adon does have the strenght and skill to back it up, and as he sees himself as the king of Muay Thai, he probably doesn't even take Dan seriously. Now that SF6 is out I wonder what became of Adon.
Ryu donkey kick kick looks similar to Gokuen focus attack, but only at first glance. In fact, Gokuen performs side kick (basically stand with his side forward , rises leg and throw it sideways), while Ryu performs like a fusion of turning back kick (basically, tour your back to opponent, bend you knee and throw it straight behind you) and wheel kick (also turn your back, but use horizontal turning momentum to perform a kick). Three kinda similar, but distinct kick. Also, in SFV Ryu drops turning his back and just does sidekick, just like Gokuen. Then again we are speaking about the game where grappling is reduced to throws and major part of game is throwing fireballs, so I'm not supprised creators are not fighters themself.
I like these videos because they take time to point out the details developers put into the games that go unnoticed by most. I would imagine they think “Thanks for being a fan”
When you compare Urien and Gill, their moves are very similar but their input for doing special moves show what kind of characters they are and establish their fighting prowess. Urien needs to charge for his special moves, implying he needs to focus to perform special moves, most likely due to his short temper. Gill can however perform his moves effortlessly with a motion input. When Urien is blocking in 3s, there is a distinct metallic sound heard compared to the rest of the cast when blocking. This metallic sound isn't heard in V (implying progress?)
You're almost right, but SFV actually takes place _before_ the events of SF3 and 3rd strike, so it's more than likely just an oversight The metallic sound might have just been a means to communicate that Urien, though appearing human, was ultimately another weapon created by The Secret Society
@@pacman10124 it also likely has to do with how urien seems to have a constant metallic coating using his magnetic powers, while in sfv he needs to use a vskill mid match to get that and it dissipates once he uses his tackle once.
Hi Bafael, Here are some points you may want to mention if you do this type of video again. #1. Makoto's dash punch is performed by the fighter on the China Wall stage in SF1. #2. Sakura's Tatsus angles downwards like Ryu/Ken's SF1 Tatus. #3. Balrog's TAP damage output equals the amount of damage Mike outputs with his Normals in SF1. Consider: When Hakan performs a back Throw he positions body in a way that hides his thumb being inserted into his opponent's anus as mentioned in the Turkish Oil Wrestling documentary available on RU-vid. Hakan was created as a representation of the world champion of that time.
Not exactly the same, but he did a video on supers a while back, where old supers from SF Alpha and 3 became EX Specials and stuff on SFV (For example, Ryu's EX Tatsu was a super in the Alpha games)
You know, Dan really had the potential, more than most. He could have surpassed Akuma if he really tried, in the comics he could use Satsui no Hado (But he couldn't control it), his 2 handed fireballs are so strong they knock him off his feet (Not controlling it) and Dankukyaku is surprisingly effective, he just had the worst luck ever, when he rough Rufus in the comic and it bunced off Rufus's big belly. He even made his own Version of raging demon, the Otoko Michi. I thin the reason Dan explodes, is that he tries to do all the rapid hits of the raging demon, but he think they just happen if you strain hard enough, and then he explodes. It even takes priority over the Raging Demon itself in MVC2. All I'm saying is if Dan put in some effort, tried to control himself better, and used proper techniques, he would've been the strongest fighter to ever live. Although he may suffer in these things, he does do some things better then even Ryu. He apparently has more durability, as zangief said- "I toss you around like rag doll... yet you stand again. I admire your heart." Implying Dan was one of the only who could stand again after getting hit with Zangief's Ultra Throws. He also developed a defensive technique in "Saikyo Defense" Which he has in Alpha 3 and USF4 Omega. In A3 he also has an air throw, which Ryu and Ken do not.
This is also supported by the fact that Dan gets even stronger in SFV, having his own version of Denjin State, having more range on his fireballs, and being able to control Haoh gadoken effectively, even making it as strong as to inflict wall bounce when charged.
I liked the way that POTS made the Otoko Michi in MUGEN; a great charge of energy so destructive, it injured Dan even moreso than the opponent The consensus is that the Saikyo style is one of the strongest fighting styles, but Dan’s use of pretend Ansatsuken unintentionally holds him back, which is why Dankicks are his redeeming factor in 4, red fireball in 5 only comes out randomly, and why he was so hecking wack in Omega (command grab, divekick, EWGF, etc.) And of course, everyone brings up how Kage’s normals and move properties are taken moreso from Dan in 4, showing how destructive a “perfected” Saikyo could be
in the comics during a sparring session Charlie laments that Guile is still doing Sonic Booms with 2 hands. Guile retorts he was focusing more on the Flash Kick. that said Guile is clearly refined his booms with the Sonic Hurricane, the Perfect Booms. his own version of the Sonic Blade, and with sf5 his v trigger letting him toss them out repeatdely one handed like Charlie.
Another Fun Fact: Ryu's VA in Third Strike is Gouken's Japanese VA, which is fitting since Gouken's supers are The Denjin Hadouken, and the Shin Shoryuken.
Man if it aint obvious enough... i didnt realise they use robert's face and ryo's moveset to create dan... i only tot its to mock ryo only... omg... i have staring at them since the 90s... love ur vids... always telling me something new i haven notice... 👍👍👍 This reminds me yuri got shin shoyruken and raging demon in kof 2001... 🤣🤣🤣
Genuine Angus Beef in 4 she does a different animation for light, medium and heavy fireballs. Light and medium use 1 hand and heavy (and ex) use both hands.
If I remember correctly, the biggest joke about Dan is that Saikyo Style is actually some ancient martial arts form capable of easily surpassing Ansatsuken, but Dan makes it looks like a shitshow because he tries too hard to incorporate Ryu and Ken's moves into it.
I'm pretty sure Abel, Urien, and Seth share similar sweeps and Abel and Seth both have step kicks (maybe a stretch). And you could talk about similarities between Rufus and the twins. Guile being Remy's father, similarities with the twins and gen, and Gen and Chun
My favorite detail that I've noticed is that the scars on evil ryus chest and back seem to indicate that he got hit by oni's ultra 1 full animation Maybe getting hit by it is what caused ryu to tap into satsui no hado; evil ryu only exists in the universe oni exists in
suppose you could talk about one of guile's alternate costumes (i forgot which one) which is a direct reference to D.Dark from the EX series, though that's more of an easter egg
My personal favourite is Ryu's jumping medium punch, which hits twice. This is a move he's had since SFA. Akuma has it too, since in SFA his moveset was basically an amalgamation of all the best shoto normals. Gouken was introduced in SSF4 and guess what, j.MP hits twice - presumably this was his move originally. And now in SFV, Sagat now has the same move! It's a great bit of plot: Sagat has gone from hating Ryu to grudging respect, and now he's straight-up emulating him. Ryu learned it from Gouken; Sagat learned it from Ryu.
I just remembered another personal speculation of mine. In SF1, Ryu has red hair, while in all subsequent appearances it's black, otherwise everything is seemingly as normal in his appearance. In SF4, Evil Ryu's 3rd color scheme is the same as Ryu's in SF1. Considering how in the canon, Ryu momentarily changed into Evil Ryu to deliver the finishing illegal shoryuken upon Sagat which gave him his scar, I'm left with the impression that perhaps by later games it is implied that in SF1 you are actually playing as Evil Ryu.
Chaf Cancel no it did not as far as I know cause most stuff in SF 1 is Canon especially the scar and the encounter between Sagat and Ryu and him using the dark hado fuled upper cut
I thought it was cool that Oni's ultra 2 "Tenchi Sokaigen" is like an allusion to Akuma's Super "Kongou Kokuretsu Zan" in Street Fighter 3. Seems like Akuma learned how to do the move later on in his life without having to go crazy.
She makes multiple references of other fighting games characters I just can't list. But in KoF14, not only she makes a reference of Dan's Haou Gadouken but his Shissou Buraiken as well.
