In this tutorial I demonstrate how to use LED Pixel tape with QLC+ software. I also discuss the hardware needed to allow QLC+ software to communicate with the pixel tape.
This series of videos was created to help community theater groups. It is an introduction and series of tutorials using QLC+, a lighting program that can replace a traditional light board and is a great alternative to community theater groups due to its attractive cost.

The QLC+ software can be downloaded here:

This is fabulous software developed by Massimo Callegari and other contributors. Please consider making a donation for all their efforts !!

Thanks for answering my question with a video! Your Theater series has been my go to for learning DMX lighting. Thank you! I am creating light tubes and to save on channels, I am using 30/m tape. Using pixel tape to be able to create effects and not just solid colors. Thanks again for what you do!! 🎉

What did you set on the display at the DSA 1024 Pixel SPI to DMX Decoder 5-24V with RF Controller for IC Strips WS2811 and 27 Other IC Types? It's possible to use only the RGB Strip with decoder?

Hello How you set your matrix display in QLC+ depends on how you plan to arrange your pixel tape. You have to choose how many rows and how many columns. The number of total pixels in the row/column setup has to be equal to the number of Leds in your pixel strip. You also have to choose how you are going to arrange the tape strip - snake or zig-zag. I explain all of that in the video. You cannot use RGB tape with a pixel decoder. RGB Led tape has 4 connections: Red, Green, Blue & Ground. RGB tape also is either 12 volt or 24 volt. For RGB tape you need an RGB decoder. www.amazon.com/JOYLIT-Channels-Digital-Decorder-Controller/dp/B01N2V9Z5R/ref=sr_1_9?crid=3DEMXJ6V6FXTK&dib=eyJ2IjoiMSJ9.gc2R42RmASKI9C3jDUOQ7j9RZsgAw4vWY18uBd9I6WVTKQwt0j3A_CW1C9bcEinggnuNH_VWXMzljEjhH4AGiiGTKmFbh3538MOD6XUcjgZnDZ7tdM-ecvcHsdDuFnp5tqxKroTM5WOectayXYyTjR-_IMd_2PufsNspn8oBCIGOoMA7raOEn0q4E8kxsv2dqR-r11mUzyUwkqU62qizuYOS9-1Q8vVIWLdhm4f6V2A5vjRJPOuXnkAiPEQFyo6GgcxAOtj52foLCbqxBHd-u1mu-13pLdwtWFrVHWRYwcg.PEiBbfPnUuZ1wpF0exMrGXh-2BI6iJJ7tNTGJv6taJw&dib_tag=se&keywords=rgb%2Bdecoder%2Bdmx&qid=1712755453&sprefix=rgb%2Bdecoder%2Caps%2C104&sr=8-9&th=1 Pixel tape has 3 connections: Power, Data & Ground. Pixel tape runs on 5 volts.

Everything is working but I am having 1 issue. My two “rows” are duplicating regardless of snake or zigzag setup. It’s like having 2 monitors set to mirror mode instead of extended mode. I am not getting the same result as I see in the matrix preview (regardless of the effect). I’m wondering if there is a setting that I am missing. Anybody have an idea?

Hello Sounds like it may be a wiring issue. If you are using two rows you need to make sure that the second piece of pixel tape is connected to the end of the first piece of pixel tape. Otherwise the dmx address of each led (pixel) will not be correct. Here is an example: I have two pieces of RGB pixel tape with 10 leds (pixels) on each piece. Assuming I am starting with DMX address 1, the first LED is controlled by DMX channels 1-3, the next LED is controlled by DMX channels 4-6 and so on so that the 10th LED would be controlled by channels 28-30. Now I connect my second piece of pixel tape to the end of the first piece by soldering it or using some sort of connector. The first LED on the second piece of tape will be DMX address 31-33, the next LED will be 34-36, and so on. Another example: I have two pieces of RGB pixel tape with 10 leds (pixels) on each piece. Assuming I am starting with DMX address 1, the first LED is controlled by DMX channels 1-3, the next LED is controlled by DMX channels 4-6 and so on so that the 10th LED would be controlled by channels 28-30. Now instead of connecting my second piece of pixel tape to the end of the first piece, I simply connect it to my controller like I did with the first piece. So now the address of the first LED on that second piece of pixel tape will be DMX channels 1-3, the second LED will be channels 4-6 and so on. In this situation the two pieces of pixel tape will mirror each other. This may be the issue with your wiring? Let me know, please!! Ed Richards

Great response, clear and concise. However, I have scenario 1. I'm creating my own light tubes so I will have 4 strips in a zig-zag setup (so that the bottom pixel is #1 for each strip [1-30, 31-60, 61-90, 91-120]). Only one connection to my controller (the same controller in your video) and then soldered return wires getting from the end of 1 strip to the beginning of the next. All seems to be good as when I run programs built into the controller, all is fine. I am pretty sure all is set right in the controller as far as how many pixels and how many channels, but that is what I will check next to be sure. I am so close to having it done. There is just 1 snag somewhere that I need to flush out. What is really weird about the whole thing is when I use an effect like center out, they both do the same thing as they should (which would also look like they are mirrored). It's when I do something like alternate where they should swap colors, they don't. They do the same thing like they are truly mirrored. Head scratcher. Share any more thoughts and I will keep updating. Thanks again, Ed! @@edwardrichards7722

I finally got the opportunity the make the videos you requested. I apologize for the length of each video but there is a lot of explanation needed. There are two videos: Part 1 discusses the interface and how to use it ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-jzuiQdAR28s.html Part 2 I actually take a manual for a fixture and show how to input all the channel information to create a fixture definition. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-PqoRGfPsV3I.html Hope this is helpful!! thank you so much Edward this will help a lot I just have one request. Could you make me the fixture profiles for some of my lights because I’m still very confused if you have time because it will take me awhile to understand the software and how to make the profiles exactly how I want them

@@DJMaxK89 Hello I would be glad to do that for you. It would be easier if you would send things to my web page email: ctltech2@outlook.com Send me the manufacturer and model of each light you want me to make a profile for. If you have a pdf of the manual, that would be helpful. If not, take a picture of the channels page in the light manual with your phone and send it to my email. FYI I will be on vacation from July 31st through August 4th and won't have access to my computer. Ed Richards
