I know a couple retired F-18 pilots who originally flew the F-14. They both said that the key to winning in the F-18 is to make it a turning war where the adversary bleeds energy. They said the F-18’s ability to turn its nose is a big advantage when dogfighting.

The moment you see the F-14A being able to score any win WVR on an M2000 you know that something is wrong.

That was a classic F-14 tactic they tried to use against the F-18. Just take the fight vertical and the F-18 simply could not point the nose up or come up with the F-14 because of the thrust and lift difference. However, it worked mostly in guns-only scenario. In the case of missiles, the F-18 did not need thrust to go after the Tomcat. Simply just find the F-14 in the radar while getting the nose up. With missiles, thrust/power is far less of a factor.

@@Abledoggie42 Not sure what you mean? I wrote practically what his story was and explained using thrust to extend quickly would work with mostly in guns only situation. Not with missiles where radar can find the target

Interview some Aussie FA18 and F111 pilots. A stack of them have schooled over confident and predictable yank pilots . Their stories are hilarious.

Several British exchange pilots have said as much. American doctrine is too ridged. Does US still train in this inefficient manner?
@JoJo-vm8vk
@JoJo-vm8vk Год назад
@@pwr2al4 I don't know. I have seen some interviews where USAF pilots said they where so far apart from other squadrons that they rarely flew DACT. Or some say that they have long transit time to training areas while when going on exchange tour within some European air force they would have more DACT opportunity and less transit time to areas, so more productive flight time. In the end, I guess many pilots will have different experiences and no two career is the same...

RAAF F-18’s often caused havoc on exercises in the U.S. Thinking outside the square…

@@stephenpage-murray7226 that’s literally what every nationalist claims. Brits claimed their Eurofighters dominated the F-22, Frenchies claimed they beat the F-22s, Indians claimed they beat the F-22. Too bad real life isn’t an exercise like Red Flag.

@@zeitgeistx5239 I swear he never said the RAAF hornet beat the F-22? That one normally doesn’t loose, but red flag is more than just fighting F-22s.
