ksltv.com/462477/utah-couples... A Utah County couple that discovered they unwittingly bought a stolen construction vehicle ended paying big for their honest decision to return it to the rightful owner.
He said he used it for a few weeks so the construction company can at least write a check to reimburse the couple for whatever rental costs would have been for the skid steer. However the reality is there's probably already an insurance payout since several weeks went by so not sure if it would even be legal
unfortunately the couple bought and received stolen goods . the couple done nothing wrong , neither did the construction company. their only option would be to sue the thief's but good luck getting money from them .
@@fidelcatsro6948 What is your definition of "bulldozer" and "proper"? I would say a bulldozer has tracks and a blade for pushing dirt with an action similar to a snowplow. And by proper I would guess a CAT D3 at
@@jasonxhx7854 The couple is guilty of receiving stolen property even if they dealt in good faith. The last person with the property when the cops come is the one who loses. While they escape criminal charges the property still goes back to the owner.
@@adriansrealm they're only guilty of receiving stolen property if they knew it was stolen before they bought it, or if they don't give it back to the owner once they become aware that it's stolen.
Who knows how much that backyard is going to cost? Is that construction company going to pay their people over time to do whatever these people are doing in their backyard?
If my skid was returned to me after being stolen by a good person I would offer my services to that couple to finish thier home improvement That's just me I guess
@@dan_hitchman007 Why would they be? They more than likely received an insurance payout for the equipment and the equipment is now the insurance companies property.
It wasn’t stolen by a good person; a thief stole it and sold it fraudulently to an innocent victim, cheating them out of thousands of bucks. That innocent victim, upon figuring out that “their” skid was stolen, did the right thing-they returned it. Then they were out the money that they were fraudulently charged for the skid by the thief. I hope the thief has to pay it back and does hard time besides.
THAT....right there, is a MAN that understands that his character is more valuable than $11K !!! I applaud him. Now, my wish for him is that the construction company would show him how much character they possess.
Happy to hear that this couple got their money back and more via generous people on gofundme. They did the right thing even though it was difficult, and society rewarded their honesty. A win-win for them and the company!
Imagine the construction company had insurance on it and already made a claim and got paid out and took the skid steer back? I find it hard to believe they didn't have insurance on it....
My question is didn't the Asphalt company have insurance on it?? Gald to here the Go Fund Me has reached the amount it has. But id like to hear more of the story. Because if I was the owners I'd have made arrangements to have a rental unit there for them for a while. And do my best to help them recover as much as possible from the two thieves. I HATE THIEVES. A bullet is to good for these two.
@@Pyle81 That's the 1st thing that came to my mind. Company should've had insurance on it to pay for the loss. For many people, I don't blame them to keep the machine. Huge risk (without media coverage) to hope that a GoFundMe has any success.
@@94fleetwood94 Knowing first hand how fly by night a LOT of these asphalt guys are around here. They probably didn't have insurance on it. We won't even right bonds for asphalt companies any more. The risk of a claim are just to high these days. And now with Diesel fuel climbing, its will get worse over night.
@@Pyle81 So what if they had insurance on it or not. You are missing the ENTIRE point of the story. The couple returned the vehicle after learning it was stolen. They didn't sit down and discuss whether or not the rightful owner had insurance, if they got it free in a drawing, if Uncle Bob gave it to the owner for a November 12th just 'cause the Uncle had ~20 grand to burn on something. They returned it because that's what you do. Sure they could have helped them offset their loss, maybe they cannot afford to. The construction company DOES HAVE EMPLOYEES to think about as well. Maybe YOU can help them offset their loss? Well? Yup, that's what I thought. Easier just to judge other people from the comfort of your home.
@@94fleetwood94 Yeah, just keep stolen property. I mean the owner should have insurance on everything that isn't bolted down. We all know insurance companies charge very little to insure and never, EVER raise rates or do not pay out. In fact, insurance companies just drive through town throwing money out every window in the Greyhound bus they drive as they announce over the loudspeaker that they are never charging premiums again! Aren't insurance companies swell?
I just checked the Go Fund me, at this time $16,155 has be raised! Such a good outcome, it’s lovely seeing so many people rewarding the couple for doing he right thing.
Nah, knowing they did the right thing was reward enough. That company that had the equipment stolen doesn’t owe them anything except a thank you. Pretty sure the company received an insurance payout for their stolen equipment and the equipment now would belong to the insurance company.
@@Meowskiii Well I don’t know for certain if they’ve received payment yet. Although, I’ve seen businesses receive insurance payouts within days of making a claim.
They had someone they know point out that it was stolen. If they kept it after that then they would be committing a crime and the person who pointed it out would know. They would have been taking a chance of getting caught with stolen property for what is really not that much money. He really had not much choice unless him and the guy who pointed it out were actually already criminals.
That's not true. If they had paid the claim, the company wouldn't own the machine anymore. It would belong to the insurance company. But since they said the company got it back, that means insurance didn't pay.
@@dewservices You would be surprised. Its not a licences machine so there is no registering that needs to happen. The construction company would have put a claim through the very day it was stolen and the insurance would have paid it out that week as the construction company would have insurance that pays out quickly so they can get a replacement asap and resume work.
@@martinvisokey8958 you think they pay that quickly LOL no way I've seen companies have to wait couple years to get payment for thefts they more than likely filed a claim but more than likely didn't get paid yet hey they might have but either way the go fund me for these guys has got just over 16k so more than the 11.5k they were out
It takes a long time to get paid from the insurance company in these situations. Not to mention it is not always in the businesses favor to open a claim. That can be more expensive in the long run than the loss of the machine. Especially if the machine is not brand new, or paid off. 10k with 8,000 hrs on the machine vs 80k and 25 hrs gets treated differently. Ultimately there's a lot of variables that we do not know.
If the company's insurance already paid they would have had to buy it back or re-pay the claim. The bobcat I use was stolen, we got the machine back and we had to pay back the insurance company.
This was a good and honorable thing to do and I praise this couple for their honesty. This is how true Americans act. Someone who knows how should set up a way that people could donate to help these folks out. I would be happy to donate. God bless them. 🙏
The company was probably annoyed as they now couldn’t claim for a new skid steer as they returned the old one in perfect condition! Very kind of the people to return it 😊
🛑 No good deed goes unpunished. If the construction company is so grateful, at least they should let him use the equipment for free until the work is done, then they can return it ❗
They returned the machine only after friends and family called them out on it. Who in their right mind pays $11k for anything without some sort of paperwork first? They thought they were getting a leg up. Which they will because fools like you will donate to the gofundme.
Since when is honesty and integrity a foolish thing to do. These people were deceived by thieves into buying a stolen piece of equipment and they had the integrity when they realized this to return the item back to its rightful owners. Kudos to them and the strong example that they set to their own children. This is a win for these people not a loss!
@@itsnotthesamething so are they not going to follow the legal route and simply sue the person/company that sold them the stolen equipment? If they don't, then basically the go fund me acct is paying the thieves off to not get sued.
@@chrisfuller2069 I have a sneaking suspicion that the people who sold them the stolen merchandise doesn't have funds to pay them back. Thieves usually don't have a lot of spare cash on hand, regardless of what they steal. I'm sure they blew thru that cash pretty quick. Hopefully they'll spend a few years in jail, if honest citizens are lucky.
@@itsnotthesamething I understand and that's a good point, but again unless the GFM acct had a stipulation that the couple will still pursue a lawsuit, the criminals are off the hook for the money. Even if it meant garnished future wages. Not meaning anything negative towards the couple, frankly Id be fine with them getting the GFM money and suing the perps for the same compensation.
Something similar at another scale happened when I was a student with a bike I bought in a second hand place. It lasted me 1 day, another student recognized it and their parents told me it was indeed his, stolen a few days ago. What can you do? I returned it to him, lost 100 francs which was all the money I had then and had to walk to school until I could save 50 francs and buy me a 12 y.o. rusty bike (nobody would ever claim). I'm with this couple and hope the construction company will do something meaningful for them.

🤔 Most businesses have insurance. Especially to cover expensive equipment. After weeks you'd think that a claim would've already been made. Sooo... Wonder if the payout was returned?
No good deed goes unpunished. The sad thing is that in most states, had the Jolleys never returned it or said anything about it, and if they had a bill of sale from the thief who sold it to them, there would have been no legal way to force them to return it, as they bought it entirely unaware it was stolen. There was literally no due diligence this couple could have done to verify whether or not the machine was in fact stolen prior to purchasing it. Construction equipment does not have a title like a car. The construction company that it was stolen from almost certainly had it insured and filed a claim. Insurance would have paid out, and then it would've been the insurance company's problem to go after the thief and wring the money out of him.
@@rllr1117 lol, when people declare someone else doesn’t have the knowledge of an elementary student but write: ‘You explanation of it sound like the understanding of an elementary school student.’ New Sage has a good point about whether or not they reported it stolen and had a police report filed. If you have a good and reputable insurance company they could have already had their claim paid by insurance. It isn’t uncommon. I do find it intriguing the business owner knew who each of the men were.
@@bonniest.pierre2045 not really. If it was paid for the business owns it. If payments remain it’s owned by lender. In this case, the only thing owed is the owner to reimburse any paid claims. They could less about obtaining the equipment as it has depreciated and they would eat cost to sell it for the value vs claim. The point of insurance isn’t the company owns your property if unnecessary claim is paid, it’s to make the client as close to ‘whole’ as possible.
The same thing happened in my state some years back. A lady bought a used backhoe for her under ground tank removal business only to find out that it was stolen. The trouble with this equipment is that in most cases one key fits all. The best thing to do is put a Lojack on your equipment if you are leaving it off site.
"I don't deserve him. He is such a good man." Yes you do because good men unfortunately do not come along every day but your husband is living proof they exist. May God bless both of you for being good people.
@Logical Extreme most likely getting piped by his best friend. Women start sniffing out a replacement as soon as they perceive what they consider weaknesses.
Totally not the story I expected and so glad I watched. That couple did all right. Recognised the situation and were able to take responsibility. Good on them. Loved this.
Honesty has cost me several times as well sadly... but i do believe Karma will come around at some point. Great Job! If you need any free labor hit me up! i would love to help somehow!
IKR ...They said it was stolen weeks ago. If that's the case, most likely that company already reported it to their insurance company and has been paid by them and now they get their equipment back talk about a win win .
A lot of people having opinions on what a company should do in response instead of holding thieves accountable. You don’t always get rewarded for doing the right thing. In fact, most of the time it costs you. That’s why it’s difficult.
Yeah the title should read " Family unknowingly purchased a stolen bobcat for 11k ,, then did the right thing by tracking down the owner and returned it, lost his 11 k investment , but retained his dignity and gained strangers respect and gratitude."
That's great but how about going in halves on the loss with the guy? I'm sure a construction company could come up with 6 grand as a show of gratitude.
There needs to be more people like this in the world, equipment theft is a huge problem for small businesses as insurance rarely covers the full cost of replacement
I agree with California Condor, the construction company should show a little gratitude, and let them use it for the job they were doing! I mean they lost over $11,000 of their own money getting back the machine! That really hurt them financially! AWESOME job, honest people! GOD bless Ya'll!
There is a very high probability that the couple would likely have sold the machine when they finished their job. That is a 20K maybe even 30K machine and with a trailer. They saw a profit as would most. Police would have found it. Better they return it than get arrested for selling stolen goods. The contractor can't just let them use it "until they are done" he has bills to pay too. He can help, and most likely will. When he does he gets free air time on the news. win win.
The buyers did the right thing and it is heartening to see honest people still exist. One warning!!! The skid steer sold for about a third of its retail value in today's market. If some thing seems to be too good of a deal, you had better listen to the warning flags. Skid steer loaders are selling at record prices right now. Junkers bring $10K. So a late model one like this is easily a $30K+ machine.
I believe that good will come to them for their honesty. When someone treats me with kindness, or helps me in some way, I always thank them, and tell them that God will bless them for it. He'll bless this couple too.
It doesn't matter if it's a dollar, or a million dollars. If it's not yours, it's not yours. Also, it's illegal to knowingly keep someone else's property. Regardless of whether you can get away with it or not.
No they didn't, just because the same person you bought a peice of equipment from sold stolen equipment doesnt mean they have to go through the effort to find whether or not that particular peice of equipment was stolen or have to track down the original owner. If police contacted them and told them it was stolen and they didnt turn it in then they would be charged.
Many of these thieves and fraudsters are too good and will make fake paperwork or have numbers match. That the issue as you don't know until you really investigate it or discover something is off.
Sadly, most all brands of tractors, skid steers, track loaders, excavators, etc. all have an identical ignition key (each category) And most, if not all keys can be purchased on Amazon or EBay for $10. There needs to be a class action lawsuit against the manufacturers for their laziness and cheapness that makes stealing an incredibly expensive machine a walk in the park.
They were out 12,000 my god. I'm glad they are being helped. They have kids. 12000 can pay for 2 years of college for most people. I'm sick of thieves!
With out it they’d be in jail too. Receiving stolen property is just as big a crime as theft of it. If they didn’t return it they’d face fines and jail. It was more than honesty. Don’t be fooled, they didn’t want to go to jail.
