I live in the So Cal desert, and we are being over-run and impacted by tourists, campers, grifters, some who have trashed and vandalized our desert wilderness areas badly just in the last few years, worse than I've ever seen. It's sickening and heartbreaking. This isn't just a place to winter camp, it's my full-time home. Thanks to all who respect and care for this beautiful place, leaving no trace.

I saw a van dweller comment on her channel that she was camping alone in the forest when two young people without the slightest understanding of privacy and respect camped right next to her car, even though several other spaces were available further away. She also commented that they made noise every night (including loud music), consumed drugs and invaded her space to the point of shaking her car when they passed. It is hard to imagine that some people out there grow up not having the slightest education at home.
You know, sometimes people have accidents in the forest. There's all sorts of dangers one could run afoul of, if one isn't careful. Miles with nobody around, nobody to see what happens and to whom. Be a shame if some of these "campers" had some misfortune whilst enjoying the forest. Some people just disappear without a trace, just the way it is.
We tented in a campground in WA that was so small the boundary between sites were merely logs laid down. A couple came in at 1:00am and decided it would be great to run the car with lights blazing while they set up their tent. Not only were they loud vocally but EVERYONE was awoken and stood and watched this debacle with disgust. You do not have to pound stakes into the ground at 1:00am for a free standing tent when there is no breeze, do that in the morning. Needless to say a few people got up early to let the sleeping couple know that karma is indeed alive.
They're not animals, Matty. Animals don't leave trash and even cats cover their poop. Humans have the ability to be the best...and the worst. At our worst, we are very, very bad. I was raised with basic manners and consideration for others. Now I'm 63 and I don't think a lot of people even teach that to their kids anymore. Applause for the rant. At 78, I know exactly what you mean. As a kid, one of the entries on our school report cards was Conduct. My parents taught us that the least thing we could do was to behave ourselves in school. Back then paddling was OK. Parents said if we got spanked at school for misbehavior, we'd get another one at home. That warning plus being taught "basic manners and consideration" in both places, seems to have been replaced with alphabet letter combinations trainings that I won't mention.

Agreed! As a solo woman, I have to be super careful around certain types of people. So sick of the anger and entitlement from so many. Drug addiction is a sad thing that takes over people. We need better answers for sure.
Sadly, these are the reasons I haven't pursued this lifestyle. I desperately want to. But encountering individuals as those he has spoken of hinders me as a single woman from making it a reality. I admire the single women that make it their reality.

I am rebuilding my Ford Van right now and will be back on the road around September full-time van life. I have placed people under citizen arrest and they can't believe it when the police take them away. I was raised by a WWII veteran who would kick your ass in a heartbeat. I have never done drugs, no smoking, no criminal record. It's time to stand up to these animals and teach them the meaning of respect. Well frankly you're quite the asshole to assume that because they can't afford $30 for 2 weeks that they are automatically drugs because I can assure you that is not the majority of people that are out there having to live that way. I work around the Nashville area cleaning recreation areas, yes I there is drugs here too but I want to add that a lot of these people coming across our border are a very disrespectful to our country. Have lived on the road on and off for three years and have seen a lot of good spots ruined. People leaving trash, burning irresponsibly, leaving shotgun shells (trash), not burying poop and feces, and shooting signs. The trashy people will ruin it for all of us. Also my rig is older and doesn’t look the nicest and sketchy people will approach me occasionally looking for hard drugs.

I have a van that I stay in right now and I had a spot where I was bothered by no one now there is several cars 13 different homeless people living in their car is leaving trash and it’s disgusting I try to find places where no one else will park and try to trash out. This is what I’ve been saying. Most of these people live in advance or just Farrell people who can’t function in normal society, and then there are those who are respectable, who are forced into doing this because of economics.
Reminds me of that PSA from the 70s. “Some people have a deep, abiding respect for the natural beauty that was once this country, and some people don't.” Such a beautiful place to be able to camp at. Makes me wish I lived out west. Back east, we don't have many as much free camping opportunities as they do out west. It's depressing how far society has regressed.
I clean up my local fishing spot, definitely wear disposable gloves, people leave all kinds of nasty things nowadays, sometimes it's 5 ft from the trash can.
Thank you for this video. We’re nomads as well for almost 4 years. We stayed in and around Havasu this last winter quite a bit (we had appts in town) leaving and coming back, bopping around to Oatman, etc. The trash and dangerous people issues seemed to just be getting worse. Makes me sad. Such a great place to hang out but I feel our time is limited to still have access to our public lands there. Happy trails.
Tweakers are all messed up. The weird thing is I have seen good decent people become absolutely shitheads with the drug seen. It seems to start off slow and tracks into absolute mess up. A supervisor at a place I worked. Wife, two kids, owned a house and a responsible job. Maybe the drugs helped with the long hours but eventually killed everything. Lost job, divorced, homeless on the street eventually dead from overdose. More resources into prevention and treatment? Weird thing is people usually think these people were always this way and will always be this way. Not true both ways. Most start out normal and most if they don't die do recover at some point. Just hard to see if all the authorities want to do is push these people into the next town.

Living in a vehicle gives people more freedom to be who they want to be but it doesn't change who they really are on the inside. I imagine the same percentage of van lifers as anyone else choose to live as horrible people. The big surprise to me is how few of the van life stories show how people used the freedom that comes with van life to try new things, develop hobbies and interests, to grow as a person. As the hippies say "wherever you go, there you are".
Always keep a lined 5 gallon pail and a grabber in my camper. Great for policing campsites of everything including cigarette butts. Leave every site spotless. Quickly becomes a habit.

I pick up trash (even piss bottles) just about everywhere I go, but I'm losing heart too. I'll find spots trashed again the very next day after I've done a bunch of work. Wtf?!!
I'm in a city and the behavior is the same. People throw garbage on the ground 1/2 block from a park gsrbage can. They did organiized harassment, strange things at a Walmart, now there is no parking there at night. They take advantage of privledges and then harm those helping them. And then there is the stalking and harassment and violence. Everything in this state is insane and getting more chaotuc and violent. Our country is in big trouble.
I don't camp much in the low desert so I cannot speak to that. Although we are not full-timers, but we go out for an extended time in the summer, but I see most people clean up their stuff. We always practice the "leave no trace" discipline. We went to Joshua Tree last summer, and to the gardens, there was a TON of bees, had one got trapped in my shirt sleeve and got stung, but Joshua Tree was SO unexpected. There are some dirtbags out there, but take the high road and think about the total volume of places you've visited vs. these idiots you describe.
Camping should be regulated. In NZ too many ‘freedom campers’ (often so-called tourists) in the country meant that it became more regulated, and there are now signs in a lot of places saying NO FREEDOM CAMPING. Which is much better for the countryside.
In my experience, things have gotten so much better since I was a kid. I remember driving down the road, throwing our trash out the window. I can't even imagine that now. People are so much more aware of how important it is to take care of the environment. They teach it in school now, unlike when I was a kid. If you leave trash laying around now, people will shame you. I'm not saying you are wrong, and I do agree that alcohol and drugs make people trashy. In my experience, it's typically locals partying that leave all the trash.
This is definitely the case here in Australia. I go out to remote areas here and you can still find trash piles from the 1930s! Big piles of food tins and bottles. Also steel beer cans from the 1970s and 80s. It is much rarer to find modern stuff as modern campers are generally well disciplined compared to the past and cart their rubbish out with them back to town.
I parked in the town of Klamath Falls, OR for a little concert and during intermission I interrupted thieves in the process of stealing my trailer. They drove off as I approached and later I found they'd stolen my generator, some valuable tools and had the trailer almost completely disconnected from my bumper hitch. This was alarming because I've been in the habit of leaving the truck and trailer for hours as I go on hikes. It's getting bad. Cops told me trailers get stolen often.
More people going out to those areas who expect people to behave well can make things better. Just knowing that people clean up makes a difference. It will never be perfect, but it's harder for people to not care about stuff if they are aware that other people care.
I have hiked PCT twice and for the most part the trail is clean but road crossings are bad as a rule of thumb we camp at least three miles from roads and you are right it's not rich or poor it's a sense of entitlement that people have and not only drugs it's everyone. You find beer cans,toilet paper and water bottles everywhere,I could tell how far the road was by the trash once you got to the cig buts you were within a half mile.

I always pickup trash when I find it especially at Cracker Barrel and Cabellas. Eventually they will stop the overnight parking just like most Walmarts have. People have no respect for anything or anyone.
I tour on a bike extensively and many times I go to campsites and end up leaving a lot of them cleaner than I found them. As said before by many people,,, this is why we cannot have nice things.
