I just traded in my 2016 ODy with 123,600 miles on it. My cylinder #2 kept on misfiring. I replaced the sparkplug each time. I didn't know about he VCM muzzler till today. I should have tried the VCM muzzler. I got a good trade-in for my Ody so it's no big deal after all

Hope whoever buys it, will consider adding the VCM Muzzler. Not your worry anymore.

Just learned about the VCM issue today after seeing a puff of white smoke behind me while driving today (was going 65 slowing to 58). From what I've read, this is classic VCM. My Odyssey is a 2012 with 110,000 miles on it. I happened to have an oil change at Honda scheduled so I asked them about it. They said they'd charge $180 to diagnose, but if it was the VCM that they'd fix it and cover the entire cost (including the $180). A couple of questions: how much damage could already be done? Is it worth it to let Honda diagnose and "fix"? I think that even if they did repair it, I'd still want the muzzle...right?

That very nice of them to cover the cost as the class action lawsuit period is over (so Honda does not have to). VCM can cause multiple issues. Let’s say they fix the rings. Damage has already been done to the engine mounts. They may still work today, but maybe a lot of life has been taken away, and may fail sooner. I would still get the Muzzler, to perhaps delay the damage process, from getting worse, on the parts that are still working fine today.

Looking at a few 2011 odysseys with 190k+ miles, is it too late to consider adding a muzzler, or do you definitely recommend i get a muzzler right away to help extend whatever life is left?

Would you be able to see the service and repair records? Maybe the damage by the VCM already happened and the parts were replaced? Or maybe not? I personally would not buy a vehicle with that many miles already, without a full history. I’ll guess these vans are in the $7-$8k range? So may worth the chance if that is your budget. With that said, I would get the VCM Muzzler, because it does not cost that much and may help prevent it from further damage.

@@andrewwang3900 thanks for super speedy reply. Both of the ones I’m looking at have had all regular maintance done to them, every 30-50k transmission oil replaced, timing belt and water pump replaced at 90-100k intervals as well. One of them shows it blew through 2 batteries in a span of 4 years in the first couple of years, but didn’t show any other new batteries installed after the fifth year of ownership. Out of 20+ vans I’ve looked at, these last two are in the best conditions inside and out, no codes, no dashboard lights on and have the service records. I’m assuming they haven’t had vcm deletes but I guess I’ll check to see now that I’m aware of what they look like in the car My goal is if I can get another 60k trouble free miles in the next 2-3 years out of the van, I’m fine with it.

@@andrewwang3900 what parts would be shown as replaced in the car history that I should be looking for?

Sounds like you found some great well kept examples. The oil consumption will be hard to tell. On my 2009 and 2010 V6 Hondas, I would need to add just under 1qt a month. On my 2014, with VCM Muzzler, I don't burn any oil between oil changes, currently 130K miles. Oil consumption is hard to fix, I recall Honda just replace the top block of the affected engines. Oil consumption IMO is acceptable for a 200K mile vehicle, not when it's "new" and one paid $40K+ for it. As for the spark plugs, one can replace them when they go bad. Spark plugs should last 100K+ miles. My 2009 and 2010 plugs both went out at 57-60K something miles. So the only thing to look for may be engine mounts, which are expense items and most owners will not be able DIY.

Hey! Just put VCM Muzzler 2 on my van. First 3 trips in car were fine, ran great and no eco. Our 4th drive the cars check emissions light came on along with temp gauge pegged. Have you guys ever had this happen?
@andrewwang3900
@andrewwang3900 8 месяцев назад
Not for me. Hook it up to a OBD2 scanner and see what codes. Most autoparts store (such as Autozone) should do it for free.

So I changed the resistor to the next lowest and it so far is better. I did see the eco light come on briefly in stop and go traffic but cleared up fairly quick

Do you have a link to where the muzzler 2 can be purchased? Looks like it won’t ship to the US? Thinking maybe I have looked up the wrong part? Looks like this product has lots of good reviews on the forums and I want to give it a try.
