Imagine turning Velma into a self insert character. Lord help us.

When the show constantly goes out of it's way to tell you how much it hates you and the show it's based on, how could it be anything else but awful.

*_"How can we do Scooby-Doo in a fun and modern way?"_* Go ask the writers of Supernatural. They did an entire episode that's both a tribute and parody of Scooby-Doo, and it's one of the most beloved episodes in the entire show.

Harvey Birdman made fun about the "Shaggy and Scooby-Doo are on drugs" joke in a much clever and funnier way nearly 20 years ago. In fact, just watch Harvey Birdman instead.

Jesus Christ that synopsis. It reads like Fred's existence dealt horrible psychic harm to them growing up so they created this show as adults decades later to enact revenge on his fictional being.

I remember in a Scooby Doo Blaire Witch special (Yes that's real) that Shaggy doesn't like being called Norville and the others poke fun at name for a bit. And the reason why he is nicknamed "Shaggy" is because of his hair. Also the fact Scooby ain't in this should be a red flag to begin with. I don't want to watch a show about a toxic and unlikable Indian Meg Griffin.

Velma in Mystery Incorporated was probably the sassiest and most savage version of the character so far, yet she is still a billion times more likable and interesting than Mindy's OC caricature.

I have to give modern writers props for their inexplicable ability to construct straw men that still manage to beat them intellectually.

Who Fred originally was: *Implied a rich background but remaining humble, optimistic, supportive, strategic, overall chill guy* The Fred THEY created: *The white "manly-man" kind of stereotype, small wee-wee, crazy, racist and sexist* THAT'S NOT MY FRED!

And people are out here trying to say this is one of the best Scooby doo shows. My sister in Christ this ain’t even in the TOP TWELVE.

I hate the term "adult-cartoon". Most of the slop these companies pump out are aimed at passive-aggressive adults with infantile problem solving skills.

How long is it going to take for writers to understand people don’t like being insulted? I’m so tired of this trend where a film or show tries to look self aware by having some character point out whatever common trope is going on and/or making fun of the target audience who like said trope, all delivered with the subtlety and grace of a car crash. It just doesn’t work when it oozes with insecurity.

Norville is Shaggy’s real name. Norville “Shaggy” Rodgers. (Not that that makes it better.)

If Daphne's boyfriend Fred is wealthy why is she dealing drugs?

Was Shaggy ever an *actual* stoner in any of the shows/movies? Like I always assumed that Shaggy just acted like like a stereotypical stoner naturally, with him being absent-minded, goofy, easy to make laugh, and constantly hungry his entire life. Making Nu-Shaggy outright say "Oh, I hate drugs" seems like a stupid and unnecessary way to hand-wave away why ""Norville" acts differently. (totally not to avoid being called racist for depicting a black character as a drug addict lmao)

"What made Scooby-Doo a kid show is Scooby-Doo." I think it was a scene from the second episode but there's a little scene where a cockroach humps another cockroach. Didn't add anything, didn't advance the story, just Daphne going "Ew." Yet the talking dog is childish.

Remember when we had the classic characters revamped into even more fleshed out characters in mystery incorporated cartoon? How that cartoon i watched as a kid also handled some dark topics, while still having humour for kids and and more grown ups. How that cartoon gave every character in the group a purpose? Like Fred was not only leader, but also was good with setting up traps and also was smart in action, Daphne being from high status family had extremely great social skills that most other groups lacked, while also being into karate, Velma not only was a nerd, but her character had cynical view ans snark that while striking still never crossed boundaries with others and scooby and shaggy essentially were the heart of the group and also even contributed when it mattered, while also trying their hardest to solve mysteries despite their cowardice. Like there is none of that with here. Instead of expanding the group out in interesting way this essentially shot the original and now is wearing it's fur as a coat.

Hilariously correct take as always. They canceled two Scooby movies that were already mostly done for this. And one had the Hex Girls in it which fans actually wanted. It's like they purposefully want to end the 'Scooby' franchise. ALSO VELMA IS 15 IN THIS. Mindy is a freaking weirdo.

Norville is Shaggy's actual first name. The fact that they had to use his generic 50s white boy name and not his hippy nickname is most unintentionally hilarious thing that came out of this show.

I think at the end of this *one* season, "Norville" will leave the town and a voicemail saying goodbye to *Belma* she'll fall in love with him again and will search out for him cliffhanger style Before going far away He’ll probably say something like: «I am going to live in my van and own a dog or something...cough cough»

They did it, actually did it. They made a Scooby-Doo IP without Scooby-Doo.

Shaggy looks like that one character from ValiDate. Y'know the one. The Bopeyes deadbeat Dad. Makes terrible rap music and brings race into every conversation.

I really wish people stuck by the "Remember: NO hate-watching" motto that was going around in response to this. From as early as the trailer, you can see the self-satisfied disdain the show has for not just the people who liked the franchise, but also the people who would've given this a genuine chance.

Will some of the suits at these companies wake up and realize that you dont increase the longevity of an IP by hiring people to work on it that hate it? We've seen it with Star Wars, Star Trek, Witcher, Halo etc

I googled this to see the exact release date (January 12, which was yesterday as I write this) and the first headline google gave me was "Ruh-roh! Mindy Kaling's new Scooby Doo spinoff Velma is slammed as a 'massive disaster' - with fans railing against 'over-sexualization' of 'unlikeable' 15-year-old characters". It really is an experience to watch this stuff fail miserably in real-time. ❤

The similarities between the designs for Daphne in Velma and Poison Ivy in Gotham High are striking.

When I heard the producers name Mindy Kaling I thought the name sounded familiar and then I realize she's the sister of the guy who pretended to be black to get into college. I didn't even know this until three weeks ago she also has a comedy show named after herself called The Mindy project that she was the producer and writer of also. This woman is a complete narcissist, even one of the companies that worked on this show is named after her family.

What annoys me is Shaggy was created at a time and place where he was just a beatnik, like there wasn't a real drug connection (Kasey Casem didn't even know about the connection until asked about it in an interview)

The whole point of Gotham is that it is about the city itself and how sick and corrupt it is. The main point of Bruce's story line in the show is about him eventually becoming Batman, which makes the writer's point ridiculous. It's clear that they just wanted to compare it to something that was popular without an original character in it.

this type of show is like a weird unintentional psychoanalysis of the authors insecurities and sexual fantasies and stuff. I felt the same way at that scene in Karen where the karen is getting turned on watching the black couple have sex in front of their open window which had curtains that they just refused to close. There's a lot of bizarro freudian shit going on with a lot of woke idpol and sexual frustration and It always gives me the feeling that i've walked into a domestic argument which is awkward and unfortunate but that there's also some really wild and salacious shit being said that makes me unable to take my eyes away from the trainwreck.

What is with modern scooby Doo always putting the characters in high school, A bunch of dropouts living in a van hit to close to home for the creators?

I just realized that the high school this takes place in is called "Crystal Cove High," which is the setting for Scooby-Doo: Mystery Incorporated. How dare you, showrunners? How dare you remind me of a far better Scooby-Doo show in your own crappy cartoon?

I mean, Shaggy's actual name has always been Norville Roberts... Everyone just calls him Shaggy... Why they thought to bring that particular part of canon to the fore, though? Beats me... And, the whole 'Shaggy does drugs' thing is completely fanon, with a hint of James Gunn's writing slathered on top.

The last thing I have ever asked myself about any cartoon character was the nature of their privates. And yet, this show just wanted to make sure you knew the white guy has some insecurity over them. That makes me feel confident as a potential consumer, knowing this franchise will not respect my intelligence. For real, Hollywood people are from another word altogether.

JLong's back, tell a friend!🎵 Also, I love how, in the need for quote-unquote "representation", rather than taking real risks and giving ethnic minorities their own original characters, stories, and IPs (you know, like how most white people have gotten over the decades?), they still think representation means just taking established IPs and doing whatever they want with them. Like Alteori said, it only shows their own racism. 🙄 At this point, between Velma taking a swing at the critics in the first teaser and the creator's 'reaction' to the backlash this all got, it's almost as if they WANT to create controversy by using "outrage marketing" tactics, because they KNOW it'll give them attention and publicity. None of the characters resemble the ones we know. Not just in appearance but in personality, and Scooby-Doo isn't even present at all. Just because an IP has a talking or anthropomorphic animal, that doesn't automatically make it for kids! I'm sick to death of this BS idea that "talking animals are for kids", because it's not true. It's just as dumb as claiming hand-drawn 2D-animation is for kids. They could have easily squeezed Scooby in there, but I guess it's good that they didn't. Otherwise they probably would have breed-swapped him into a pit-bull, Doberman or Rottweiler instead and completely screwed over his entire personality like they did to the others, making them all into stereotypes. And also-also, why the fuck is Shaggy called "Shaggy" if he doesn't have even a full head of shaggy hair? Wasn't that why his nickname was "Shaggy" in the first place?? Oh wait. He's not "Shaggy" anymore, he's "Norville"... ...Why are these guys the Mystery Inc. gang again? Why aren't they original characters for a brand new animated TV show if they're going to look and act *nothing* like the characters we all know and love? Criken2 and the gang's "Solver Squad" parody playthroughs feel more like Scooby-Doo than this.

The CW's Supernatural was the modern day Scooby Doo for more adult oriented audience. So much so that they referenced Scoob and the gang multiple times throughout the series and eventually were allowed to do an episode with the mystery gang in a later season.

I said it before and I'll say it again. If there's no dog, this shit ain't Scooby Doo. And may I remind you that HBO Max removed numerous cartoons (some that I enjoyed btw) just so shit like this can be added to their streaming service.

I like that they left out Scooby because a talking dog is too "kiddy", but ghosts and cartoonish over-the-top crimes & murders are completely fine, apparently. I think it says more about the level of maturity of the creators themselves that they thought removing Scooby and adding knockoff Family Guy humor & gore to the show is all it takes to make it "mature" and "for adults".

I love the notion of "you just hate change" it's so goofy to ascribe innate value to change. If I gave you a raw egg and bottle of steam instead of an omelette and a glass of water that would definitely be change. is it better? Is it an avant garde innovation or just a waste of everybody's time and effort? Change has no innate value to it and whether something is "progress" or just a waste is decided after the chips are down and the thing is complete. Right now watching the velma trailers is like some sort of comedic horror show where I'm seeing the cook toss cat faeces and moist loogies into my sandwich and all I can think, can't help but think, is. "i'm not eating that, what the fuck are they doing back there?" Maybe this catshit sandwich will be delicious and maybe the sun in the sky will grow shoes and begin tapdancing across the sky, i'm not holding my breath.

There's a theory that Mindy wanted to make an original show but couldn't get it greenlit unless it used an existing IP, which explains why it's only tangibly related to Scooby-Doo and so hateful to the source material.

Regarding reeling up a ghost, the original show would have acknowledged that. Velma would have brought up how if it really was a Ghost they shouldn't be able to interact with it so clearly this is a person. The children's cartoon is smarter than the adult cartoon. This keeps happening and it's still funny to me.
