Mrs. Petri in a later interview stated quite firmly that this evening was by far the hardest challenge of her professional career. Not exactly hard to believe, huh...
As he was improvising most of this song (which is incredible in itself), notice how at 3:38 he thinks the melody is going in another direction (as it did at 1:25), then realizes, and in a split second seaminglessly changes his play. I believe the chello player in the back notices and smiles! Small detail that just goes to show what a truly gifted pianist he was. RIP
actually at the dvd that was realesed with his life work shortly after he passed away, may his soul rest in peace, he did explain that he had heard this pice of music but he had never learnt to play it, so yes he imporivises the entire time. he was a genious, a musical wounder. RIP Borge, i am sorry that i didnt have time to talk to you once more before you passed away
I've lost count of how many times I've watched and enjoyed this. Makes me wonder every time. She knows just what he's going to do and still has trouble keeping from laughing. Mark of a real comedy genius. Hat off to Michala for being such a sport.
And he will be remembered.. For sure.. maybe not for the musical talent, maybe not for his finesse but maybe because he was not only the first stand-up-comedian but the only one with that talent of both musicality and humour.
Why not for his musical talent?? Hear him play claire the lune : he has a beautifull touch and plays with a lot off musicality and feeling. Apparantly he started making jokes because he was nervous on stage, but in the beginning he was a very prommissing concertpianist !!
Victor could and CAN a liitle light the darkest day! R.I.P. dear Victor and thank you sooooooooooo much for the joy you granted to us. Give our best wishes also to Danny Kaye .........he might be with you on cloud 7!
now, every time i hear Czardas i always remember Victor Borge and Michala Petri. plus there will always be a smile on my face. correction, a silly grin.
This is one of my all time favourie pieces of comedy. Both are excellent musicians but the young lady's laughter just adds so much to the fun. Bravo! Encore!
It MUST be Victor Borge who can disturbe Michala Petri. Two super professionals playing against and together!!!!!!!!!!! WONDERFUL R.I.P. dear Victor and THANK YOU SO MUCH
I play the recorder too, and listening to her makes me want to sit down and cry. Not for her, for me! She's like Flight of the Bumblebee and I'm more like Chopsticks. Woof!
so classic... i love how he can be so hilarious and bring so many different people in with his comedy, but they can still show how amazing they can be as performers. she's crazy good.
And to remind you all.. Victor Borge was the entertainer that pushed classical music to its limits.. If he wanted to.. he could have played everything with no humour, but his effect on classical music was so much more because he used his humour. Them americans say he was an american but he was danish in his roots.. Musically and humour.
What a gem! I ran across this by accident and couldn't stop smiling. I saw Michala in Chicago at Symphony Hall some 30+ years ago. I see she's still performing.
Very Brave to let Victor Borge accompany her! Because Mr. Borge will do whatever possible to get her to laugh for the purpose of distracting her from performing perfectly, but she did anyways! Don't get me wrong I love watching Victor Borge perform on all his comedy DVD albums, but he didn't make this whistle/flute player Michala Petri laugh while she was playing her part!
remember watching it on danish tv as a child... it was always surtain that we would laugh :-)) and remember especialy this with Petri... it has become a classic in Denmark! Loved his abillity to make his guests loose it !
Amazing performance - and that she is able to play at all... The best performance ever by two top artists!!! If you like this, also check out top pianist Ilana Vered, doing some humorous versions of Gershwin and Tchaikovsky.
Ganz großes Kino!! - Und es ist unglaublich, wie professionell sie ist und weiterspielt, obschon sie ständig zum Lachen gebracht wird! Vielen Dank fürs Hochladen!
@bluehiu it's like all comedians, they have their bits that they do. He has lots of gags that he uses over and over, like his seatbelts in the piano bench. There's some things I think he does just to make the person he's accompanying crack up.
