Video Editor Reacts to Harry Styles - As It Was

Harry Styles tried to recreate the rotating platform performance for his 2023 Grammy performance of As It Was which was carefully rehearsed with a group of dancers. However, as the live performance began the platform rotated the wrong direction (!) leaving Harry and the dancers to try to figure out the performance on the fly. The audience, of course, had no idea there was a big technical problem. Harry was a gentleman, as usual, and didn't complain. We only learned of the near disaster because the dancers were so distraught. Harry comforted them and even asked after the well being of the technical staff. Theres a lot of art inspiration in this music video, the rotating platform dance was based on a installation live artwork by Yoann Bourgeois, who also choreographed that part for Harry here. The part with the colourful artwork and they get pinned down with metal shapes, is based off a Charles and Ray Eames photograph with their design of chairs pinning the couple down as they held hands together. Also, the artwork panels were commissioned, and Harry took them home afterwards (I can't seem to find the artists name right now, if anyone remembers). It is filmed at the the Barbican Centre (outside shots), Lindley Hall (inside hall), and the disused penguin pool at London Zoo. The Barbican Centre isn't actually a hotel, its a community living space, which was made originally as an idealistic community housing idea back in 1965. It comprises of flats, a museum, a gallery, a school for music and drama now. Harry has said this is actually a very sad song, about things changing as time passes, he wrote it as a sad and somber death march at first on piano.

It was definitely written in Lock down, sometimes he was in America and other times he was in England, Harry was supposed to tour the album just as everything was cancelled 😢 but Harry always leaves the songs to your own interpretation.

The great thing about watching you react to older mv's without already being saturated with knowledge is that I feel like I'm watching them for the first time all over again. You've reminded me to be in awe of Harry Styles

He did say it was a lockdown song that was originally written as a slow "death march" style song. The kid at beginning is a voicemail from his goddaughter who he said was calling him every night before bed and he missed one of her calls lol. The art/turntable choreography was amazing - I think the behind the scenes goes into it

there’s actually a lot of inspiration from the matrix for the music video, the line “answer the phone” and “what kind of pills are you on” references that as well as the costumes signifying the red pill blue pill part of it. the pool location was actually a penguin exhibit at a zoo!

Knew you would love that transition into the penguin pool. It’s so good. I believe they were filming this with the Ukrainian director when the war broke out. I think it’s a combo of Covid lockdown depression, his tour getting cancelled, dating OW, which was probably stressful with the 2 kids and the long distance. (Doubtful anyone really believes the she and the 2 kids are Harry’s mom and sister). But then at the end he clearly finds some happiness and busts out with some bells and dancing. Because sometimes good things can rise from bad times. Can’t wait for you to watch Taylor Swift’s “Style” and “Out of the Woods” videos and realize they’re both about H. 🤯

I knew you would like this one, it's pretty clever & has a lot of layers. It feels simple at first but it has a certain depth in it, both the song & music video. I think most of his music videos (and songs) have multiple stories layered in them, none of them are actually very straight-forward. He has said in an interview that "As it was" was originally a sad tune, that it is about the time in his life when he was not in a good place, and that it feels kind of weird seeing people dance and have fun to it. I also think the lyrics are quite heavy, especially the second verse ("answer the phone/ Harry, you're no good alone/ Why are you sitting alone on the floor?/ what kind of pills are you on?"). The video also portrays his looking kind of sad & defeated at one point.. but after the bridge things turn, in the video and in the song & he seems more free, the camera is moving faster and he is doing his emancipated little dance with a huge smile on his face. So, things are not the way they were - but eventually it is not necessarily a good or a bad thing. Life just goes on, and so do we. There are parts in this song that point to his ex -qirlfriend, director Olivia Wilde, who he was dating at that time. She lives in america & has two kids, and I think he was struggling with the circumstances. A long distance relationship with a single mom is not an easy one to maintain, when you're a huge pop star.. especially if you have a huge fan base which also holds a fair amount of loonies & conspiracy theorists who are ready to jump on & tear apart every woman you ever date. First song I heard by Harry, I’m a late bloomer, but really delved into his career and work after that , even the 1D stuff. The guys a genius. AND IM AN OLDER WOMAN.

To me it felt like an on/off relationship with lots of rebounding and backsliding, then finally when *she* leaves he's able to find freedom and happiness from being alone. It seems like she was someone/something he couldn't let go. The mention of father related trauma though had me thinking about him losing his stepdad to cancer a few years ago.

Harry shares a lot of personal details, memories and stories in his songs. But never explains anything properly. Just parts of the story. He definitely loves to confuse the listeners by adding a sentence or just a few words to an otherwise wholesome story. For instance, adding something what happened at a different time or a different person was involved. This is the way he still can keep his private matters to himself even though openly singing about them. A great example the ominous 2 lines in this song: „Leave America, two kids follow her I don't wanna talk about who's doin' it first” Yes, the first line is very likely about the Don’t worry, Darling director. But the second line is an answer to his former partner, the one who broke Harry’s heart first and left him. Interesting that most people totally blind-sided by that 2 lines, while the lyrics is full of indications that Harry is talking to somebody else, not to her. “Seems you cannot be replaced And I'm the one who will stay” The entire song is basically a dialogue his former partner and his family and friends. He is singing about all the things changed because of the pandemic and because of a very painful breakup which hit him at the same time. He went through a devastating personal loss during lockdown. By the time his third album was released, he was in a new relationship. And nothing was like it used to be. “You know it's not the same as it was As it was, as it was”

There's a Watermelon Sugar video and it has a bts but the video is... peculiar just lik the meaning of a song🤭 still a cool video, I loved the aesthetic of it and at the time it was shot not many people did this 70's vibe just yet, it all followed the next year onwards I believe. He aad his love (in this world) are in the closet and not public-facing. The pool is the penguin enclosure at a US zoo that is known for its homosexual penguins. Nothing to do with the pandemic. This relationship started when he was 16.

I’m loving the Harry content - this particular song is possibly about Olivia Wilde, he was in a relationship with her for a while and she has two kids. If you want to seriously get into Harry’s love life, you’d need to start back to his baby days on x-factor and how One Direction came together. For more context, there’s HOURS on Larry Stylinson (Louis is proposed to be the person @ the end of the video). All of that being said, I truly enjoy the blind reactions and the things you pick up on! As much as I love and adore Harry, I honestly believe you’d become obsessed with Billie Eilish’s stuff as well - “NDA” is a good one to start! Please! 😍 I don’t think you can go wrong with many of hers, but NDA is a work of magic between special effects, lighting… you just *have* to see it to understand my 🙌🏼 over it. Then, you can follow it up with all of her “when we all fall asleep where do we go” vids, if you need a bit more of a chill Billie, “Bellyache” and “Ocean Eyes” (not the dance version) are on point, too. She has been directing all of her own videos for years - most of when she was a teenager (she’s only 21 now!). Anyway…. Had to get that out lol 😅 I could talk about this all day.

People will have you believe that this song was written in lockdown…it wasn’t! Harry stated that this was one of the last songs written for the album, he finished writing the album July/August 2021. There are lyrics in the song that are a direct reference to his ex girlfriend Olivia Wilde (who he was still with at the time of writing this song) the lyrics ‘leave America, two kids follow her’ is a direct reference to when she and her 2 kids left America with him in early 2021 so he could film a movie in London. They subsequently lived in London together for about 9 months in 2022. Certain fans didn’t like Olivia, so decided the relationship was fake and ignore what he himself has said in regards to when this song was written as they don’t want ANY song to be about her🤦🏼‍♀️
