I’m always concerned when people far away think life is beautiful in US. I fear it makes them feel hopeless, because maybe they think their troubles would be over, if only they could get here. Or that they have been forsaken and are meant to be poor. Thank you for showing them people, many people, struggle in ‘ rich’ countries, too.

@@letsgomets002 There are places like that in the U.S. Skid Row is more like a camp than a slum. Plus the girl said she was only homeless for 5 months and she had hair coloring, they're in Los Angeles, not Detroit. I must say, this was a poor example of the problems in the US. They basically called a summer camp for druggies a slum. I was actually disappointed, but my point still stands.

Some parents just gave up in the end, i don't fault them at all. As someone who had to deal with a drug addict brother i know what a strain it can become for parents to deal with. They want to trust and hope that their child will get better with help and time, but how many times would you accept getting robbed by your own son? or beaten up for being "too pushy" about getting clean? over and over until either the parents snap or someone dies. I would say that most of the people there are there because they alienated their family to live the way they wanted and when it all came crashing down they had no one to turn to other than miserable people living as shitty as themself. Sympathising is fine, but if the reason you are on the street is choice "YOu" made on your own, then its on you to get out of it.

A lot don't want to miss out on the freebies [welfare/food stamps], but also cannot afford to move elsewhere and feel it's a forlorn situation. Your points are true too. Some people don't want to help themselves and some like to live off others even their own family. Shame. The welfare state has a lot to blame for this too, as it was 'designed' to be a stop gap between jobs/hardships and not to live off. @@anglosaxon5874 Welfare states have existed throughout history. As much as you may hate the idea of people who 'leach off the rest of us', the alternative isn't much better. Without a comprehensive welfare system, Skid Row areas would become more likely. Slums might be more possible. People WILL drown their sorrows in drugs, alcohol and one of the most potent feel-goods...sex...creating more babies that would generate a new cycle of poverty and desperation. That lack of welfare would ultimately affect the lower and middle classes more than the upper echelons of society that tend to isolate themselves in areas away from the lower classes. For upper middle to lower middle class families, crime would most likely rise in their neighborhoods or areas that they frequent (shopping centers, malls, etc.). Incarcerations would increase and take more money out of your pocket as money shifts from welfare to prisoner care. Here in the US it costs about $34,000+ a year to take care of 1 federal prisoner. Compare that to $22,740 per welfare recipient. As much as I think people should work and take care of themselves, if I have to pay for the security a welfare state provides, while I still live a life that the Common Man Show members think is better than an industrialist lives in their country, then so be it. I'm still doing amazingly well then.

right I'm from the capital of California and there is this one street where homeless families have just kind of literally turned it into a little village burnt out buses have been turned into little houses, kids playing on Rusty junkyard equipment the parents go to the freeway and panhandle it's super depressing

@@manolo5042 not every job is available for everyone. even education in the US is highly segregated and as a matter of fact noone should be forced to do a job he or she can't even earn enough to pay for the basics of living. Not a single man or woman should be forced to do more than one job just to be able to pay for daily needs. There are no meaningless jobs. A company cant work with just the shareholders on the top. Even the people cleaning the floors should earn enough for a living since its also an important part of the whole companies process. If they wouldnt be necessary their job would not exist. The US is sick. unrestrained capitalism is the virus name. a totaly wrong understanding of freedom is the reason why people diing in the streets, can get tolerated even if it happens right infront of their nose. So maybe you are right. Indeed i have American friends who have been forced to live in their cars for brief periods due to expenses getting over their heads. Its a failure of politics still, a sign that the supply and demand chain has been disrupted completely by the machinations of the politicians.

Here's some truth for you: "Average American home" is a misconception for all involved. *Most* Americans today are not home owners; there are only 80 million home owners in America, compared to 333 million people. Less than a 1/4th of people in this country own a home; renting or sharing a home with someone that does own it is the typical existence in America. We are constantly sold a long bill of goods that has not been true for a very long time.

@O_O Democratic states pay the most federal taxes and are the most educated. Wouldn't that mean that most of the money the government spends on the military, highways and such comes from them? Aren't Texas and Florida in the top 3 for recipients of welfare benefits because Republican states seem to be poor? I won't leave out the truth of the numbers because California is in the top 3, too. Texas and Florida are in the top 4 for federal taxes as well. The point is that anyone can spew percentages and numbers that make things seem bad. The truth is though that most Republican states (other than Texas and Florida) offer their own drains on our nation but are sucking up more money than they are giving. There are Democratic states with crime problems and money problems as well. We shouldn't be playing these games of which party is worse. We need to look at how we make both parties better for the average American. Neither one is really doing anyone any favors other than for the people that can afford to donate enough to their campaigns to register a "Hello!" or a personal nod. We need to make both parties change that! I pay more in taxes than a lot of rich people. Let's find out which one of these parties can fix that!

The "f'm" attitude benefits the banks the most, getting more people into debts taking out loans to pay for housing; it is done at the expense of the better orientation of values; that being the lives of people matter more than things.

I saw a documentary in a poor part of California, with thousands of people all living an impoverished, dangerous life. Gangs wore colour coded t- shirts so their drug selling territories were marked. Mentally ill, addicts, prostitutes, all manner of the rejected lived there in a sort of community. Every so often police came through, and swept their tents and belongings away. It was awful. The wealthy wanted the area they lived in to be rebuilt into expensive housing for themselves. The city wanted the taxes those wealthy people would pay. It was very ugly. This kind of thinking has been happening since the migration during the Depression and Dustbowl years, when farms lost their topsoil in the thirties. Banks wanted the land, foreclosed on small farms, and hundreds of thousands migrated to California, where they were treated terribly. Diseases broke out, crop picking didn’t pay enough to keep families alive, children weren’t allowed in schools, no one was treated in hospitals because they weren’t allowed in. It’s always terrible, mankind at its worst when wealth , or anything else, beats up on the poor.

And it is the politicians pushing such measures most benefiting with more income coming in for their projects.

Getting politicans out of trying to run things would help the system immensly they have destroyed it completely with their micromanagement.

@@abhisheknair8437 A lot of private charities unfortunately don't really help the people they say they do. They give most of the money to the leaders, and even take possessions away from the homeless and sell them. Or they are religious organizations and force them to attend religious classes and often discriminate against people of other religions, or queer people. Obviously some charities do good, but the government should use its broad power and use our money to invest in its own people rather than wars etc, and then we wouldn't even need the small charities to begin with.

@@revangerang While you are right in some of the things you say. I dont understand why you think a government cannot be homophobic or why they would have any compassion. I mean you point out the problem with governments when you state the government "should" use the money for the people and not the war indicating that they do use it presently for war. With charities you have a wider ambit of uncovering corruption than in governments because the regulation of the use of money and the actual use of money are two separate entities with charities. Maybe if the government used tax money to fund private charities like they fund private contractors this would be a separate issue but right now private charities are the better option. You don't need to donate to a christian one, though not all christian ones are necessarily bad. There are plenty of charities which work with different motives.

in democracies the people is by all means the main focus of attention. what really matters is the existence of this group of "democracy makers." that is, the existence of few hundred of giant capitalists who own all the factories and shares and who, ultimately, lead the people. they are not interested at all in the great masses of people. they are the only ones who can be addressed as international elements because they conduct their business everywhere. it is a small, rootless, international clique that is turning people against each other, that does not want them to have peace.

They gravitate to LA because liberal policy fuels them. Free needles, fouling in the street, setting up tents where they wish, and a new law that prevents them from being arrested for shoplifting. Liberalism perpetuates vagrancy. Just like to perpetuates and apologizes for criminals.

It is unreasonable to assume just taking away services will force them to miraculously be healed and become functional members of society. Your statement that liberalism perpetuates homelessness is not just uninformed but untrue. Liberals have long sought to provide housing alternatives and medical and mental health services to the homeless. By providing such services we take these people off the street and get them the help they need. They no longer become targets for drug dealers and human traffickers but instead have a chance to become a normalized participant in society. The Conservative answer is to remove any help and wait for Jesus to miraculously solve the problem. So Christian of you all.

In fact I do not think that is what is happening. What we are seeing is a civil reluctance to prevent it because courts have sided with the thieves when injured by security and police are seldom there to stop the crimes. The petty nature of the crimes often results in quick release and light sentences because of overtaxed correctional and legal systems. The other things you complain about are lessor alternatives to what should be done to address the homelessness issue. Needle access is a public health issue and helps control the spread of diseases addicts contract by using and sharing dirty needles. Needle exchange programs prevent these diseases and in effect lower the cost of treating future potential health issues for taxpayers. Making space available for campsites for homeless is a way to keep the issue as contained as possible in the absence of actual housing. Keep in mind that homeless people are US Citizens and have every Constitutional right and protection as you do. You can't make laws that punish someone for their financial status. It isn't illegal to be homeless.
