Visiting The Zero Waste Fair

I visited the Zero Waste Day fair at the New Paltz recycling center. They had various activities and demonstrations which show us how to reduce the amount of waste that goes to the land fill.
This is an annual event which they hope to grow in order to make people more aware of the amount of usable waste that they dump into the landfills.
Laura, the owner, and Gia were kind enough to personally show me around.
The land fills are being loaded up with garbage by the ton each day. Behind the recycling center is a 14 acre mound which was a landfill in the past. This is always off gassing and leaching out liquid waste.
Laura has been studying ways to reduce the amount of waste that goes to the landfill by recycling and reusing anything possible.
Even food has been getting sent to the landfill. Food which is perfectly useful although the sell by date is past. They are looking into ways to use the food rather than see it get buried underground.
I was shown various stands and demonstrations on organic gardening, composting organic waste, a vegetable oil car and more.
Gia demonstrated how you can clean the drains in your sink using only vinegar and baking soda. This is a safe and environmentally friendly way to clean your sink. There are no special measurements an even children can do it.
There was a live band and activities for the children. Some of the children's activities were quite interesting for adults as well.
We looked at how to compost vegetable material which can be used to fertilize your garden. Even the composter itself was recycled. When you look at it, you may recognize the McDonalds kids play tunnel which was saved from being thrown away and turned into something useful.
You can find the New Paltz recycling center and learn more about their ideas and initiatives here: www.newpaltzreuse.org

Vicki Olson I LOVED this video! Off to find Part 2! 😃

Vicki Olson Fortunately in the city I live in all refuse picked up by the trash company is separated and recycled. Large items are also picked up for free up to 6 times a year. All yard waste is composted and sold at a very reasonable price. I hope more and more cities start doing that, or that programs like the one in the video are put in place.

John King John, a complete stranger who has never met Troy, certainly would not know if he stunk or not as he or she would not have ever smelled him, now would he or she, or any other of the fools who are parroting the same language.

If there are gasses coming out of the landfill then the organic stuff in it is definitely decomposing.
@UNumbTV
@UNumbTV 9 лет назад
mickeybill If that statement is correct then I think I may be decomposing too. :-)

I do not know why they do not teach this in school and get the kids conditioned in how to handle waste and recycle safely. They will teach them history, but not what they need to know in everyday events and common sense. This was a good event. cheers.

***** I do hope they start teaching about contamination. It is the same water for over a million years, yet just stated to get contaminated since 1940's.
@TheOnGridHomestead1
@TheOnGridHomestead1 9 лет назад
MrMac5150 The same water that's always been here is still here and we haven't done a very good job taking care of it. We are running out of drinking water fast, which most people don't realize. Kind of like the same air that's always been here is still here, and all of the pollution that has ever been poured into it is still here in one form or another. Shameful.

See that yoi are looking into local area for your mulch. They use the methane for powering motors with lpg kits. The sluge can be use for biofuel in heavy trucks for local hauls. Keep in touch with this crew and see if they can do a utube channel. .

Frederick Nolan I will stay in contact with them. I also have more contacts from the fair that I will get in touch with soon
@TheOnGridHomestead1
@TheOnGridHomestead1 9 лет назад
Frederick Nolan There are also power generating plants that use the methane from landfills. I'd much rather see landfills go away because the stuff buried there never does. Pretty much everything that goes into a landfill can be recycled, which is what we do in my City and other adjacent cities.

Troy I support all that you are doing with your place and plans but did any of this change your views regarding the open air dump you live next too? I know you use some things from it but have you considered asking your landlord's about cleaning it up at all? I can only imagine the toxins leaching out of a lot of the stuff there.
@TheDoItYourselfWorld
@TheDoItYourselfWorld 9 лет назад
GrandsonofKong No it has not changed my plans or views. I still want to clean it all up one day. She hopes to recycle it all eventually. I am working on getting it done sooner rather than later.
@GrandsonofKong
@GrandsonofKong 9 лет назад
The Do It Yourself World I was wondering..while I'm sure there is "gold" there in the form of metals probably a few surprises as well depending on how old the dump is.
@TheDoItYourselfWorld
@TheDoItYourselfWorld 9 лет назад
GrandsonofKong There is literally thousands of dollars worth of recycling in there. Just hope I can one day work a deal with her to clean it up. She wants someone to come in and do it for free for her while she keeps all the profits. That will probably never happen.

nice place though i think they may be missing out on a few tricks like that gas venting from the landfill site is methan that they use to power a genrator or liquifie and bottle while that seepidge i think i recall theres a company that could mabe turn it into gasoline
@TheDoItYourselfWorld
@TheDoItYourselfWorld 9 лет назад
james head Yes but I fear the cost of setting it up would be a lot
@jameshead5047
@jameshead5047 9 лет назад
The Do It Yourself World yeah the seting up a methane extraction plant might be a bit costly to buy depending how ambitious they are ( i'm sure i've herd of farmers owning small gas liquidfiers to run their tractors from methane extracted from their manure ) as for the goop thats already being colected and shipped out in barrels so all they need to do is find the company and see if they want it
@TheDoItYourselfWorld
@TheDoItYourselfWorld 9 лет назад
james head That goop has me interested. Wonder what you could do with it and how many hazardous chemicals are in it
@jameshead5047
@jameshead5047 9 лет назад
The Do It Yourself World at a guess it mostly organic in nature a bit like the organic tea you use in a garden only very consentrated so plus any othe minerals & heavy metals ( they wold be why you cant use it for gardening and getting rid of it is so exspensive ) it leached out of the rubbish in the land fill
