Vocal Coach Reaction To Chris Stapleton - Tennessee Whiskey - Ken Tamplin
Chris Stapleton is a TRUE soul singer with music influences ranging from outlaw country and bluegrass, to rock and roll and blues.
Stapleton moved to Nashville to pursue a music career in 2001 but his first debut studio album was not released until 2015!
Though it took him almost 15 years, he never gave up on his DREAM!
Before making it BIG as a solo artist, he was the frontman for a bluegrass group called The Steeldrivers, followed by a southern rock band called The Jompson Brothers.
He was also writing hits for some of country's biggest names.
On his debut album Traveller, Stapleton played ALL the parts including electric guitar, mandolin, and acoustic guitar.
His debut album won the 2015 Country Music Association Award for Best Male Vocalist, New Artist of the Year, and Album of the Year. He also won 2 Grammys for Best Country Album and Best Country Solo Performance.
I will be reacting to his song “Tennessee Whiskey” which was previously recorded by multiple artists including David Allan Coe and George Jones in the early 80s.
Stapleton’s version went on to become certified quadruple Platinum.
Check out this original performance and watch how he captivates his audience.
Let me know how you thought he did!
Here's a link to me teaching you how to sing his vocal riff from the song:

I was thinking the same thing! He's a musical freak to combine all those styles into "The Stapleton" style. No wonder he's so wildly popular. Great stuff KT, keep it coming!!
@momogrecovery8452
@momogrecovery8452 5 лет назад
Yeah but that's what makes it so Incredibly sick! He takes the licks from I'd rather go Blind, the lyrics from George Jones are practically from an entirely different song(not really) but only music peeps like US would know that. Also, he's not ripping it off, he's paying tribute with this reinvention ... again, the music industry is missing stuff like this In general. This song has introduced general music fans to his catalogue which is actually really good. I like what you said ..but honestly, this is pretty straight up blues, not country but I like stuff that blurs the boundaries

And..... His guitar playing. My God. So simple and relax without fear of pausing. Something I forget to do with my 3 piece band because I always feel like I have to fill up the empty space. Chris Stapleton has made me go back and review not only my singing, but also my guitar playing.

@@kentamplin Oh yes. I'm totally aware. But somehow, when I review my live performances on video I always criticize myself for overplaying. Sometimes I over sing too. Like too much sustain or too much vibrato. I don't notice I'm doing it during the performance though.

Funny, his most significant band before his solo career was with the Bluegrass band 'The Steeldrivers'. I love them. Lots of blues in the BLUEgrass. Chris does some Steeldrivers in his sets and 'Midnight Train to Memphis' was originally from those days...just a little more rocked up now. I was never a bluegrass or country guy but I'll see the Steeldrivers whenever I can and obviously how I got introduced to Chris.

One of the best things about watching you compared to other teachers on here is that you really teach and point out what the singer is doing while understanding it's their style, not saying they're singing it wrong or should be doing it differently. Big props to you for that and for genuinely teaching and loving the music

Being from a family who daily were on the porch in the south with their fiddles,guitars,spoons what have you, I hear when I listen to Chris more of a combo of country and gospel, which sounds alot like blues except for the twang in the voice that differentiates them. Chris Stapleton is absolutely a born and raised country boy,who probably spent alot of time jamming in the house or a porch,just love his music

Rev can seen. He'd be glad to see you if you've got a prayer. ;) But boy I have a prayer in Memphis. ;) I love your videos because I got sick and almost died... my voice used to be extremely powerful, and I had a "big guy baritone" and sang "Why cant this be love" which was incredibly challenging but the sickness stripped it out but I appreciate you giving people progression and advice, Ken. I still don't have all my inner muscles to where I'd like them to be, and I used to "sing from my toes up" and while it might not be good or might not be bad , now I can't get a baritone note out without it breaking. Plus, you wrote so many of my favorite songs in the 80s that people might not know!!! Much Love. Mr T!

I’ve been checking out your stuff on country artists! You are so correct! Some of the new guys bringing back the good stuff is (I’ve seen this one, Combs, and Childers) Colter Wall (fraulein or sleeping on the black top) very Johnny cash esq and is from Canada! Billy Strings (dust in a baggie or freedom) very bluegrass and folk stuff Margo price (Hurtin’ on the bottle) great female vocal artist in country today! Dillon Carmichael (old songs like that) has some Jamey Johnson feel to him, super nice guy too! Jason Isbell (cover me up the OG) not really sure who I would compare him to but he’s absolutely great! Zach Bryan (condemned, heading south, or my favorite sweet DeAnn a song about his mother who passed) similar to Tyler but in a different way! The Steele woods (axe or straw in the wind) they are like a southern rock but harder than Skynyrd. Super great in concert! Hope this helps with some new country guys doing it right! New sub today!!

KEN TAMPLIN Great reaction today. I never heard of this guy. Very cool and different. Thank you for breaking down his singing. It helps me a bunch. Stay Awesome, my friend! Hey, can you do a reaction to PHIL PHILLIPS "Miles" or "Gone,Gone,Gone?"

You're completely right about the variations of his show. I've seen him a few times and every show is different. Edit: This would also be the last song I would of chose for you to react to. Simply because you already have something to compare it to. Broken halos is a great tune. I was wrong is great as well.

Between you and Rick Beato, I don't know who is better at completely changing my perspective of a song or musician.

You broke it down nicely. I caught the Al Green and Sam Cooke I heard Etta James (I'd rather go blind) vibe from the beginning

Thanks for that, I really love this song and Chris' style. I am currently working on this song and this post is a great help. One of my favorite things I like about his singing is the phrasing and the variations in how he applies it, I think I have watched every performance on youtube. I also would prefer a warmer sound. I think I have been hanging around this channel too long. Thanks also for the detailed notes in the description.

Amazing, the mention of Susan Tudeschi gets me energized. Yes, that first "I..." Chris didn't was kinda painful, but wished I could do that Al green run too..
