That was awesome! Thanks for another wonderful video. Having done some desktop phone support during the period when USB started showing up in personal computers, one of the jokes we would make when there were driver issues was to blame it on a recent solar flare. I guess the joke was on us! By the way, who of us hasn't tripped up a cord and screwed a drive? It goes with the territory.

A (german?) scientist claimed some years ago that the current Intel CPUs should actually not work reliably and produce errors about once a day just from that sort of radiation and particles flipping bits. So he bombarded a CPU with increasingly more and more radiation and found that it was not affected at all up to a certain point. At this point suddenly the entire CPU shut down and went into some safe state. He found that the amount of radiation is pretty the amount you would expect in high earth orbit and outer space. So he theorized that there is some means of error correction in the CPU that shuts down at a point where it would be used for military and space usage. There are rumors that IBM was somehow involved in this and their CPUs also have/had that tech in them.

That's why there is ecc ram
@Basement-Science
@Basement-Science 3 года назад
Well, not quite. ECC memory doesnt correct for ALL hardware errors. But it can certainly help a lot. A processor holds some data by itself in its registers or caches. These may or may not have some error correction capabilities, but are independent of any RAM installed in the system. Of course you can also do a lot of error correction or detection in software. You can store everything in 2 locations and check them for consistency, run calculations twice on the same processor, etc etc.
@ChickenPermissionOG

@@Basement-Science Sure I just meant it was another error protection to use as a cross check.

Did you just described raid 5 ???
@martinxXsuto
@martinxXsuto 3 года назад
no raid 5 is a way to store data in a way that allows one drive to fail (become unreadable) with no data loss This is a way to detect such a case, where one system deliberately sends bad data (you don't know if it's bad, only if the other two agree on something else)
@schlbus
@schlbus 3 года назад
@@martinxXsuto yet another computer expert shows up. Harddrives most of the times corrupt data way more often than you think.
@martinxXsuto
@martinxXsuto 3 года назад
@@schlbus yes, but RAID was intended to handle complete drive failiure, not some corruption that can be resolved with clever encoding used by the device itself
@schlbus
@schlbus 3 года назад
@@martinxXsuto It seems you are watching the wrong youtube channels, this one is ok, you get to meet people like me, just don't continue on that train of thought. raid 5 is meant to protect data, not drive failures. That is all.
