Sweet bus. Hope you keeping the ratty look. Building a 1.7 for my 70 low light. Good luck with the rest of your build 😎🤙🏻

Did you notch the rod large journals? VW put out a tech advisory to "V" notch the top facing the bottom of the piston to help send oil to the bottom of the pistons.

Can I ask how long it took overall to strip down and rebuild 👍👍

It was a 3 month turn around from dropping the motor out to driving the bus with the rebuilt one.

Awesome man. Ive been wanting to buy an extra type 4 to rebuild myself to learn. How much do you think you spent on parts for your rebuild?

In total it was about 3k to do it all. Kustom1Warehouse supplied the rebuild kit... Stewart over there is a really awesome guy and can help you out on any questions.

@@JalopyFlips Awesome! One more question - previous owner took out all the FI and put a single progressive carb on it. I want to upgrade to duals but have been looking at a set like what you have (are yours the Weber 34ICT??). How were they to synch up and do they work out pretty good for you?

@@jamie-r2034 I was going to go with the Webers and hear they are great but went with a kit that EMPI sells just because they were easier to get a hold of and a little more affordable. They've been great and were easy to set up and sync up. They are EMPI 34's.

It appears you used white lithium grease for everything? Was that liquid gasket on the case?

Yeah, it isn't generally used for bearings anymore. It can cause oil starvation on initial startup. Just use regular oil... or if it has to sit on the bench for a while, an assembly lube like the one by Royal Purple. Yamabond 4 or motoseal should be used at the case to cylinder joint, sparingly. Grease will just leak eventually

Do you recall what connecting rods were used in your build. I'm rebuilding a 1.7 1972 as well and looking to upgrade from stock.

I used stock ones
