One of the things that I found the most difficult before moving to Braga Portugal was getting a sense of the size of the city. Now living in Braga I wanted to share my experience and take you guys along to get a feel for this one aspect of expat life in Portugal. For those of you considering a move to Braga, don't worry I plan to show other parts of the city in the future. In this expat vlog episode of Not Your Average Globetrotter, I wanted to bring you along with me to see some of the central areas within the city of Braga Portugal and also to show that even being not directly in the center of the town gives you easy access to the center of the city. If you have any questions about living in Portugal or general topics about being an expat in Portugal, let me know in the comments section below, and I may be able to cover it in a future video.

Interesting Rafael. Watching for the 1st time from the UK. Like the walk you gave us and amazed at super little squares/gardens. Seems that there is a lovely feel to Braga, good civic pride too - everything being so well cared for. The only thing that might bug me is the throngs of tourists, sorry. Guess that contributes to Braga being visibly prosperous and looked after. So good for the city itself. Obrigada amigo! X:)

Was in Braga this past March - such a treat to watch your videos and relive the routes! There is definitely a lot of walking. Lovely.

@@RafaelDiFuria I was scouting! Hoping to return soon with my husband so we can really see it. We’re retired (old!), so there’s a lot to consider. I’m so glad I found your videos!

What is very different in Portugal in comparison to any other mediteranian country, is how clear the views are. In most other countries including Italy and Greece, when you look into the distance it always looks kind of foggy/misty, but in Portugal it's always crystal clear. The whole country is just something else and Porto is the most beautiful city, although I liked every single town I've seen in Portugal. The food also is second to none, just as good or better as in any other country in the mediteranian.

Braga is a city with good structure, but with the charm of a small and old town. Even so, it is considered the city with the youngest population in Portugal. The city is quite safe, has several festivals and cultural events throughout the year. I would choose an apartment in neighborhoods outside the Historic Center. This is a region with older properties, no elevator and no garage. I prefer "freguesias" like Nogueiró, Fraião and Lamaçães. They are more structured places, with newer buildings, good infrastructure (schools, banks, commerce in general) that are still less than 5 km from the city center. If you want to look for the property, I recommend the Idealista and Imovirtual websites.

Falling in love with Braga based on your videos! However also looking forward to your explorations of other nearby locations when you have time for some travel other than Lisbon and Porto, as we decide where to land when we move to Portugal.

You’re awesome man! You must have read my mind as I planned to walk the same (or nearby) streets as part of our trip to Braga this September. I thought a walk from the train station to Braga Parque would be too much but you’ve shown it can be done…except for the gradual hill on the train station side of your walk. 🥵 Our AirBnb place is right at about 25:15. Picked this spot since it appeared to be near residential areas within walking distance of the historic center! We’ll take your advice and also explore the east side of Braga Parque. Also considering the areas near the Parque Rodovia. 🚴 Always appreciate your videos. ♥️

You are definitely already familiar with some shortcuts in Braga and it is only when we know the main shortcuts of a city that we become a true citizen and inhabitant of the city. But to be a true Bracarense you have to appreciate papas de sarrabulho, real Celtic bracarae food to be eaten on a winter Sunday!

While I can say I know the streets of Braga, I can't say I know that dish well.. It's made with pigs blood no? I have to admit that's one ingredient that may keep me away from the dish 🤣

Thanks, Rafael, so much for this video. I was just in Braga for the day while visiting Porto, about 3 weeks ago. I found Braga to be quite pleasing. I simply need a peaceful place that's quiet at night. I'd love to have a small piece of ground for garden and a dog. Even a "casa em banda," or duplex. I need to go back again to check out moradias, and quintas too. I thought Porto was to busy, and noisey. My bairro in São Domingos de Benfica (Lisboa) is more quiet than Porto. And, BTW: In comparison to Porto & Lisaoa, Braga is "f l a t." LOL... Well.... flat enough for me, but I don't mind hills either. Cheers!

Thanks for your comment Ray regarding hills in Braga vs Lisbon and Porto. We’re struggling with hills in all three cities but will revisit in September to determine what we can live with…should we relocate. Cheers. 👍🏻

Been trying to decide on a location to purchase a place we can come to. We live in the US, over the years we've been to Portugal six times our last trip was last August/September. We came to Braga just for the day, must have been right around the same time as this video because all the white streamers were hanging and they were setting up for "white night" that night. Loved it. We are coming back next June to scout out our final location. Have it narrowed down to Braga, Viana do Castelo and Chaves ( where the family is from). I think Braga will take the win. I heard you say in this video that there is always something going on as far as far as festas and parades go, what months , in your opinion, have the best festas? Thanks for all your videos. I am confident I can get around Braga on my own as I watched your videos multiple times. Mike

Love your walkabout! Will be coming over in March for a scouting trip. Curious about what the giant gray boxes with a door toward the top. Garbage? Recycling? Compost? Thanks, Rafeal for giving me a better sense of the city.
@TiagoJLoureiro

Those are regular Garbage disposals. There are other smaller Recycling containers: they are usually dug in the ground and have a smaller top.

Those smaller ones are great because it doesn’t look like. Giant garbage heap above ground… usually

Great news from Braga as always :) btw. Maybe you should take, a ride on bike with camera to show us how we can ride there... unfortunately don't see too many bike paths there and you are right cars have too many privileges in such a small and narrow streets. And there should definitely be more restrictions up to 30 km.
@alessandrosilva4441
@alessandrosilva4441 Год назад
You will find bike paths in the "freguesias" that I mentioned. Search videos about Parque da Rodovia in Braga.
@RafaelDiFuria
@RafaelDiFuria Год назад
Unfortunately for getting around the center it’s not the most convenient, the route I would have taken with a two wheeled vehicle would have only slightly been different just taking some parallel streets instead of the ones in this video, other than the long two way street after the center, that’s one of the better riding streets in the central areas

@@RafaelDiFuria yes thanks for your answer....as we can see, the city still has a lot to do compared to other European cities, although most of them have a lot to do in total :D

Maybe I'm just tech-stupid, but how are you recording in both directions at once? Also, any suggestions for the best ways to learn Portuguese from scratch?
@RafaelDiFuria
@RafaelDiFuria Год назад
2 cameras and edited the footage together, theoretically you could do something similar with a 360 camera I'd recommend looking up the basics and common phrases that you use day to day then finding music in Portuguese and then translating that on your own into English

Thanks for the experience, I found you early in the Pandemic Lockdowns and found your Italian content comforting. I've spent about a month each year in Italy, although I have no interest in moving there... It was a nice way to experience my love for Italy. Best of luck in your move to Braga, but I'm no longer interested in the content. So arrivederci Ravi.
