Series 2: Is all about restoring this 'special' Norton Commando from 1968!
WEEK 5 - This week we start the actual restoration work on this iconic 1968 Norton Commando, the ealiest known surviving production line model.
Every week a new video will be uploaded covering my week by week restoration of this iconic part of the Norton history, the original Norton Commando 750 1968, so PLEASE SUBSCRIBE TO MY CHANNEL AND HIT THE NOTIFICATION 'BELL' ICON, TO BE NOTIFIED WHEN A NEW VIDEO IS PUBLISHED.
I look forward to sharing this worthwhile project with all Norton enthusiasts around the world.
Some history of this Norton Commando:
It was discovered in the USA rusting away until it was shipped to auction. Disguised as a cafe racer this Commando found its way to a local dealer but little did anyone know that this was one of the very first production Commandos in existence. The earliest recorded production Commando was 126125. This Norton Commando serial is 126188 putting it into the very earliest period of the commando. In fact I welcome anyone to produce a frame engine and gearbox Commando with an earlier serial number. I would be most intrigued to see how many still survive from that period.
From the auction in the USA it was shipped across 4 states to eventually being shipped to France where it was put up again for auction on eBay. I was very lucky to spot it whilst on holiday in Mallorca. It was a perfect project for the type of aesthetic restoration work I undertake. The dealer very kindly drove through the night and through the covid restrictions to my workshop in England.
Unlike the Royal Enfield Bullet 350 restoration in Series 1 (which you should definitely watch), we will follow the progress week by week as opposed to a master class in restoration for each part of a vintage bike restore.
Yes if you are thinking about restoring an English / British made vintage motorbike then you just lucked out! This series brings back a most beautiful classic English super bike back to new factory condition.
I do not over polish or finish any restored bikes. I also do not believe in rusting patena examples. I reverse engineer the restoration to what the designer had envisioned and no more. That is how they were..Restore with great care and do what is right for the bike!

That model frame is called the '' Widow maker'' as they crack/bend at the steering head ,they were recalled and a new frame was fitted. Keep it but do not ride it ,well if you do use that frame you will not ride for long .Suggest you join the Norton Access forum for lots of info .Also those pistons drop the tops off, again use at your own risk .

Hi Paul. Respectfully I must disagree. I’ve engaged on this subject regarding the frame too many times but I’ll respond here to update the comments. The ‘widow maker story’ is now set in stone unfortunately and not researched. Berliner requested an immediate review of this frame after in the first consignment some fell off the truck onto there noses. This raised concerns so Villiers Norton added the extra brace. Why? This is the US market and the brand was against the wall if they didn’t deal with the concern. Prior to this NV designed a perfectly good frame and tested it to production prior to the damage. In fact many other brands use a similar design but never suffered the same fate. This bike has not only been ridden since the 1960’s but also raced. Because there are not many left it is hard to defend against a popular myth. There are of course frame failures as with any but it’s not anymore dangerous that any other brand of the same era upon which the spotlight is not focussed. I still had an inspection done on the 2 brace weld points in question in particular to which there was no issues found. Therefore this frame will stay as it is according to its original design as will the pistons because they too have seen no failure in there tenure inside this engine. This is a period restoration taken seriously as this is 1 of probably only 2 surviving in this original spec. It would have been totally remiss of me to simply follow advise because someone has declared it unsafe. I hope you would agree that we all ought to do our research before tampering unnecessarily. I’m glad I did! That all said thank you for your concern and also partaking in this conversation. It is always great to read, learn and share. All the best.

The Z plates were polished. Flush out the oil tank thoroughly after the grit blasting. Check the lower frame loops for straightness around the centre stand. They are often bend upwards because of kickstarting the bike while sitting on the main stand. Another weak point of those early Commandos. I installed the later style centre stand mounted on the gearbox cradle.
