The Warby-Ovens Range is off the grid, not in the usual sense of the phrase more with regards to where life's train tracks would normally guide me. Often it's tucked away off the Hume Highway while you're rushing north or south. Unless you're headed for Yarrawonga there's not a lot of chance you'll give a passing thought to the "Warbies", especially with the rock-star status of the Ovens Valley nearby.
So when a mid-week conference materialised nearby I figured this was the opportunity for a strategic day's leave and an overnighter in the highly commended Wenham's Camp. It didn't disappoint. Swing-arm iron plates for the fireplaces, soft dunny rolls in the 'dropper', firewood left by the previous camper and a wide clearing to appreciate how small we are in the wee hours of the evening. If all I did was stay the night I would've left a winner even without the walk.
The next day's bush walk took in Kwat Kwat Lookout, Mount Warby summit, and a small gorge just shy of Salisbury Falls. What always grabs my attention for a beautiful walk is a varied, ever changing environment and that is what this walk does, albeit subtly, very well. Several species of threatened woodland birds can be found in this environment particularly through the middle section between Mount Warby and Salisbury Falls. So pack the long lens if your legs can stomach it, there's plenty on offer to capture.
