WH40K Rogue Trader E7 - Pasqual, introduce me (also, we get conscripted by the Inquisition)

Travel the galaxy and you'll have a chance to meet all kinds of interesting people. Some will try to trade with you, other will try to murder you (this has been a very high share so far in this playthrough), and others will be members of the Imperial Inquisition and just conscript you to help with their missions.
It's not all bad news though, because it turns out Pasqual gets it - and is happy to fill in for Abelard in introducing us wherever we go before we (almost inevitably) ask Cassia and Argenta to sweep the room.

Figuring out what the Tech-Priests mean in modern terms is a fun little exercise. Like the problem your ship has with its warpdrive was something like its archives having suffered damage in the mutiny and "the main cogitator is in mourning". Ok, so some databases have been corrupted, the mainframe is stuck in automatic recovery mode and people aren't sure how to boot it back up?

8:40 if I remember right, one of the dataslates you pick up on the voidstation talks about an experiment where they found that servants with their tongues cut out were not driven insane by Cassia’s powers as quickly as intact servants. Seems likely that Cassia’s belief that this is a “noble tradition” was a lie told to her by her caretakers to explain why all her servants were mute.

15:45 I just love the dissonance of your procession of noblemen and holy people rocking up to this guy torturing people to death with "G'day mate, how ya doin'?". It's a perfect encapsulation of why this series has become my most-anticipated Let's Play after only the actual voice actors from _Baldur's Gate 3_ doing their own playthroughs of said game. At 48:40 i think you missed why Pasqal got annoyed. Someone tried to insult him with a name thats a compliment to his order. The irrationality of it made him annoyed. Like seeing someone try and push a square block through a round hole. Or intentionally hang a painting slightly crooked. On Aurora's little speech. The sad truth is it was pretty spot on with a lot of things. Mostly how regular humans genuinly are just treated as an exploitable resource by the nobles.

Frankly having the psyker of the party unsanctioned is a massive friction point for me. That's a massive deal, certainly not just a whimsical RP flavour quirk. Keeping her on the ship in case she comes out with any useful predictions is well within Rogue Trader's right, but having her go on away missions, on to the planet where honest-to-f*ck chaos uprising is going on is extremely unwise. And having her meet inquisitorial agents would be asking for trouble, noone wants the imperial watchdogs to have actual leverage on you on top of their theoretically infinite authority.

Since the game, both through lore and RNG, have given you great reasons to not bring Idira, I'll make a quick argument on her behalf. 1. She is strong, real strong, which cannot be understated even when trying to balance the risk she brings. 2. All Psykers, even sanctioned, run the risk of perils when working with the warp. What happened was really bad - however - once can always be an anomaly, so maybe a two strike system is worth considering. 3. The game describes her as middle-aged looking. That would be pretty old for a sanctioned psyker. For an unsanctioned psyker that is ancient. If she didn't have remarkable control and will, she would be dead by now. Or terribly mutated. This is something of a self-evident truth. She has enough cunning and self control to have survived this many years, which demands some respect. 4. This is a bad argument so I left it for last, however I just like her and her personality. She is fun in a way you practically never see in 40k. She also brings a somewhat unique perspective compared to most companions. All that said there are obviously great reasons to space her asap, though between the game and your own knowledge, I suspect you are highly aware of all of those already. Still, I'd vote bring her, at the very least over a no-name merc NPC. :)
@MrElrood
@MrElrood 9 месяцев назад
I love 2nd and 3rd arguments - striking psyker out for summoning demon after excessive use of their abilities is basically barring any psyker sanctioned or unsanctioned from the crew. In this case gameplay mechanics are a bit counterproductive for full on roleplay. Even Heinrix can both pass out and summon demon, being both inquisition agent and sanctioned psyker, if veil will be too thin in combat.

The difference is between someone who recieved a formal education and a rank amateur. The latter, no matter how talented they are, is not an adequate replacement. #2 is hilarious for reasons I can't explain right now. If you know you know. We have such sights yet to see. #1 was actually a reason I held off on giving her the Emperor's Peace as long as I did. I know you're using them regularly so it might not help you too much, but you can avoid the glitch by respecing them and either leaving them at level one or not taking SEI on them again. 31:00 - I was pretty much playing Iconoclast way, but in this particular situation it was a huge strain on me role-play wise. Not even because symbols of Chaos are, well, powerful; but also because I had no idea how can you realistically mask Paskal (with his dendrites) and Cassia (with her eye) by weaing another costume. Pasqal can pass as a Heretech priest and Cassia can either pass as a regular -mutant- blessed with Chaos gifts or claim to be a member of Gene-Stealer cult exchange program 😉 And Iconoclasts unwisly using Xeno- or Chaostech just to achieve greater goal this one time (and going down the slippery slope) is an established trope in 40K lore.

A small UI tip that might make your life a bit easier, in case you don't already know: When planning your movement, instead of left clicking again to confirm the movement, you can instead choose one of your attacks or abilities and their indicators will behave as if you'd already moved to that spot - enabling you to preview your LOS and effected targets. Useful for things like Cassia's Lidless Stare, which is dependent on line of sight for example. If you then left click again, that character will execute both movement and ability, while a right click will bring you back to planning movement. Very much enjoying your renewed activity on this channel and the commentary!

1:13:00 - another Iconoclastic choice I have problems with. On one hand, I'm pretty ok with idea that nobody, Inquisition included, has a daemonic sword with a hard on me/beef against me. Inquisitors aren't known for always making the most rational and sensible decisions considering forbidden artifacts [for the Glory of the Emperor of course]. Even the most puritan ones known [not to everybody, of course, but still] for making mistakes about this. On the other hand, I'm very much not chill with throwing the chaos-infused wraithbone object of unknown properties into the planet-feeding reactor of unknown properties.
@PerunGamingAU
@PerunGamingAU 9 месяцев назад
I have been disappointed with a lot of the Iconoclast choices tbh - I was expecting a much more 'balanced' run so far but a good few of them, like this one, seem a bit needlessly risky. Like you, KNOWING that chaos can infect machinery, I was dubious about exposing a planet supporting reactor to a shard of chaos infused wraithbone.
@khaerinaenno

@@PerunGamingAU Still, fair is fair, I also have a big problems with a lot of Dogmatic choices for, essentially, the same reason: some of them are really risky. (Still, this pretty risky decisions tend not to bite you in the ass highlighting how risky it actually is to always bet that Emperor Protects.) Like, take the fight with that tech-priest as example; if this priest die, you're screwed, and you'll know you're screwed because you have no codes to open the door. Or, well, the very first Dogmatic choice in the game: things like this are called "miracles" for a reason, and, even if you are betting on your faith saving you, no way Idira does; still, she's survive, and people who are not are nameless mooks. Or keeping malfunctioning servitors at work, because "people who they were didn't work their due". (I believe that one was where you took Iconoclast?).

@khaerinaenno absolutely agreed. I only bet dogmatic in the opening because we had a sister of battle there and I thought that not pushing through might cause the loss of the ship. Ok, answering Idira question. My opinion, of course. I was playing with a recreating of my really long-standing Dark Heresy character, who was a Sanctionite Psyker with a... pretty turmoilous biography. Essentially, he hates Chaos because he grown-up on, effectively, Daemonic World (daemon-infested space hulk, to be more precise). "Aurora, I've seen the results of Tzeentch's plans, let me tell you, not a fan"*. The two things he's absolutely never trusting are Imperial institutions and Holy Inquisition. "I worked for Inquisition; I know as a fact they're not infallible, but they tend to believe they are." The only two institutions he tend to keep in pretty better regard are AAT and Adeptus Astronomica. He also is partial to some Space Marines, because it was Marines who saved him and didn't burn him. Still, he's very keen to the dangers of the Immaterium. "Imperium tells you about the dangers of the Warp. They're lying. Warp is far more dangerous they're making you to believe, even if in a bit different way." And "I don't have a problem that you summoned a daemon that I need to kill, that's tuesday. I have a problem with a lack of discipline you're showing by summoning the daemon." He's pretty respectful to the idea of psyker without Sanctioning being able to resist daemons, keeping his wits and, especially, willpower, up, because that's how he survived for about two decades. He can't see that person who, in the first meeting, literally saying that she's getting warp-crazy and listening to the voices in her head who are saying pretty dangerous stuff (I mean, it's pretty obvious that this particular entities aren't Ruinous Powers neutral) _is_ even trying to keep her wits and, especially, willpower, up. So, I can justify decision not to execute her immediatly. Even after _other events_ I wouldn't spoil, for a couple of reasons. I can't justify letting her run around unsupervised and allowed to use her abilities actively and indiscriminatory. What I did was keeping Idira in the party, but never using her psy abilities in combat. "You are allowed to listen. You're not allowed to answer in any shape or form." And bracing for disaster. * By the way, it was really funny experience for me. The outlook of this character was, more or less, defined by his upbringing, and I was playing him for a really long time, and his main feature in the party always was that he was resident Chaos expert, whose main reaction to the Chaos, daemons and sorcerers was deep, deeperst annoyance, not a terror. When I put him into this game, the only thing I knew was that he's going to become RT ("so, it seems, something should happen with this not-very-smart-gal-with-a-plasma-pistol?"). When this character, with this particular bio, had the ending of the prologue, where he was spoken by Edge of Daybreak, his honest reaction was "oh, fuck, here we go again, hello childhood".

There's a plot point that comes up later that really makes it a struggle to, in universe, keep Idera with what's going on. If this was a table top, I probably would have 100% 'taken care of her', but since its a videogame I really want to see what her story is despite leaning towards a Dogmatic playthrough (with Iconoclast trappings). I basically had to weasel my way into thinking that she's apart of the crew longer than I have been, so dispensing with her might cause resentment with the higher officers, which is the last thing you want while getting your footing as Lord Captain. Do wish I had an option to assign Argenta as her personal 'handler' though, as she's on her very last leg with me.

You took Abelard off the team? You introduce yourself!? What is this heresy! Bolter vs Flamer: In my opinion the difference is a question of "dealing with one guy" vs "dealing with trash". The flamer slaughters trash mobs really well due to its AOE effect. But the Bolter can output so many shots and so much damage that it powers right through single targets exceptionally well. Personally, my Argenta uses a Bolter(upgraded from a low-damage Heavy Bolter) and a sword+plasma pistol for Melee+AOE.

Pasqal has some very fun synergies with plasma weapons. Even just a pistol is very good, as he can pretty much wipe most fights solo once he gets given the officer ulti. He has both plenty of extra damage for plasma weapons and he gets refunded the AP that he spends to shoot them, so he can shoot as many times as the ulti allows (which I think is 11 times, but might be dependant on officer fellowship or such) and then hand over the extra AP to someone else.

On Idira: Rogue traders are basically macroeconomic forces made manifest, right? Millions of people, probably billions, live and die off the decisions you make. From where I stand, you're morally obligated to make those decisions with as much information as possible. Take Idira, and you've now got every speculative financier and risk management analyst's dream; actual information from the actual future. Take Idira, and one vision in the right place at the right time could make you the richest man in the segmentum.Take Idira, and you're exchanging strategic risk, which you can't do anything about (all other things bieng equal) for tactical risk, which you can mitigate with Cassia that teenage girl whom you're slowly but steadily turning into Dr Manhattan. You can also avoid that risk all together by just not using her psychic abilities. She's an operative with really high perception, so using analyse enemies on somone then blapping them with a sniper rifle means she can be plenty useful even without evaporating 5 enemies a turn. In short: Take idira, use her for stock tips, save countless lives and thrones, blow up the odd extra plaguebearer from time to time.

Perun, you missed out on an interesting bit of info by not asking Aurora if she planned to blow up the reactor. You could have learned from her that the end goal of the whole operation was to pull the planet into the warp, thus creating a new demonworld. Scary stuff there. 😨😨😨

A reoccurring problem for the imperium is that no-one knows what a cultist looks like. The chaos symbols are classified, and everyone is told to be constantly vigilant and that anyone could be a cultist in disguise. This leads to a lot of blue on blue incidents, especially with acolyte or rogue trader teams, who tend towards the eccentric and esoteric in their presentation.

Perun, I suggest swapping longlas to Argenta, and changing to it for any single target attacks. In my playthrough she hasn't touched anything but the long range weapons since the nav station, and she clears encounters all by herself... Kinda like your Cassia does. Except Cassia's gaze is range limited... And sniper rifle isn't.

Mine Argenta was focused on flamers, up until the point i got a usable heavy bolter, that's when she became a terrifying blender that would shoot 9 bolts with 40% penetration and around 100 damage per bolt. She could shoot up to 4 times in her turn. It actually felt unfair for the enemy.

The main RP reason to keep Idira around isn't really compatible with a Dogmatic playthrough. The Rogue Trader's favor the only thing standing between her and a ticket on a black ship that's more likely than not to be one-way, and she knows it. So you can be as Iconoclastic or even Heretical as you like, and she won't go off telling your neighborhood Inquisitor about it -- because she knows what "reward" would await her. She also makes some predictions (including one Perun missed about the good Inquisitor) that end up being quite insightful, and her connections give the Rogue Trader useful (if often morally dubious) options in Protectorate management as long as she's on your ship.

Okay so.. Idira. I have a love hate relationship with her. She is useful ok one edge of the sword and a liability on the other. She will prevent you from being ambushed while a member of the party. She can become exceptionally powerful for multi kill psyker nukes, she's amusing. On the dangerous side. She doesn't only summon daemons to smite.. perils of the warp can (and will) reflect and knock idira and other party members down. Aka She managed to knock cassia and Argenta prone on the opening move for a boss fight. There are also spoiler related things which I will not discuss here, but she very much is a case of "Useful, powerful, but dangerous "

I think it interesting how rigid the three ideology choices are: Dogmatic is blind faith often in the absence of proof Heretical is outright submission to chaos without any subtly Iconoclastic is anarchistic, wantonly advocating for the destruction of any institutions or traditions with no interest in why they might exist. Its interesting that there is not much of a "common sense" or "rational" choice most of the time, which frankly fits with the setting. I also think that our rogue trader might be finding themselves in the Tyranny (the game) trap: Where by taking choices to appeal to and appease those around him he is submitting to their beliefs, and locking them in as his own. Considering how dogmatic he was been, it will be interesting to see how that impacts the story going forwards.

A tip you can build Cassia to stack resolve such as using Air of Authority and linchpin (Master tactician) and apply it to Idira. The reason for this is a spell called wrath of the emperor (3x3) which it's damage is based on the resolve of the caster I got up to 500 damage in a 3x3 area once. You get the staff to cast the spell by leveling your reputation with the priests up to 5 ( Sanctified Staff). It's very strong in my experience though I've only been playing it normal. Hope this helps

Why using Idira, when there is a Sanctic character (Heinrix) who can buff Resolve even more?
@michaelrix4156
@michaelrix4156 9 месяцев назад
I didn't use Heinrix in my main party and Idira was my only psyker ( I respecced her into sanctic anyway) . But I'm pretty sure Sanctic doesn't get wrath of the emperor they get word of the emperor (buffs resolve). Also if you use brace of impact (warrior ability) you can upgrade it with a talent to provide a extra turn for everyone for additional movement (Only movement) but it counts for stacking mastery of time for Cassia. @@khaerinaenno
@khaerinaenno
@khaerinaenno 9 месяцев назад
@@michaelrix4156 Yes, that's what I meant: Heinrix can buff resolve, which makes Wrath of the Emperor more powerful, and he can carry staves as well. He also have a quite better disposition to have better Fel (means more resolve again). The only reason to use specifically Idira here is because of her Unsactionite trait, which gives her +1 PR, but she also have a chance to kill herself (which is, in my opinion, worse debuff then summoning daemons).
@michaelrix4156
@michaelrix4156 9 месяцев назад
I would agree with you Heinrix is likely the more reliable and probably the better choice for the wrath of emperor spell. The main reason I prefer Idira is I like the character more and the divination spells align more with the rest of the party. @@khaerinaenno

Early on a flamer might outdo a bolter, but pretty soon the bolter will be the stronger pick for Argenta. Concentrated Fire + Rapid Fire is no joke, I've one-shot (well, bolter goes brrrr more like) bosses with her. Granted, I play on Daring, don't remember what Perun is playing at right now.

With regards to Idira I think the real question is if that sort of risk was already know to the Captain. If it came as a shock then sure question it, but people have used unstable tools and weapons of war for as long as they've existed and that's why the Imperium continues to use psykers in the first place. If the risk is known and the benefits outweigh them can the Captain accept this as a calculated risk?
@khaerinaenno
@khaerinaenno 9 месяцев назад
Here's the thing: Idira, sadly, doesn't show *benefits* so much, neither gameplay-wise or narrative-wise, especially when Cassia is around. I believe there is a very funny bit in Navigator's station where Idira notice a Chaos influence and go into "damned Chaos that clouds my eyes, if only I would notice signs before, I'd be able to save Theodora", and Abelard is, like, "Idira, relax, your prophesies are pretty useless anyways until looked in hindsight".

For the record, if I were in the rogue trader’s shoes I would definitely bench Idira but definitely not just execute her. She’s effed up on like her second deployment or something, but at the end of the day there are things that you NEED a psycher for as a RT and if you definitely need to roll those dice then you want to still have the option…. Or at least until you have a replacement

As a chaotic, heretical rogue trader, Idira is bae. Causing warp phenomena, including summoning demons is such fun if you like to get resized. *Ahem* With idira on the team you do fill the warp meter faster, allowing you to tap into heretical abilities sooner. So Idira makes sense if you're going hard evil. Although, if you're going for a squared away and righteous rogue trader, then she's significantly less desirable from a game play and even role play perspective, which is quite on par with the lore
