What Albon's Williams F1 2022 deal means for his ties to Red Bull

Alex Albon will race for Williams in the 2022 F1 season, after he was 'released' by Red Bull to take up the drive. But in confirming it had released its reserve driver, Red Bull also said it would maintain a relationship with Albon and have options on his services for the future. Given Mercedes wasn't happy about the idea of a Red Bull driver using its engine at another team, the confusion around Albon's contractual status has made the latest move in the F1 driver market even more intriguing.

I’m glad to see him back in a seat and I think it’s important to differentiate between customer team and junior team. Williams is not Mercedes’ Alpha Tauri, they are their own team who happen to be customers of Mercedes as an engine supplier.

umm - but how ? Albon won't be going into RBR factory to get details on their powertrains. Forget about the factory - he won't be near anywhere the Red Bull garage. While he would be certainly in Williams garage with Mercedes PU on his car - So logically Alex would have more 1st hand information to give Red Bull rather than to get from Red Bull. But in any case - obviously Mercedes and Williams or FIA aren't that naïve - to simply let people from one garage to leak information to another garage as easily... after what we had in McLaren-Ferrari fiasco.. Merc's are skeptical - they should be but then engine development are anyways frozen till 2024 - so what Albon can manage to grasp would be of the outdated PU only - which anyways RBR might have enough idea by now.

I gotta say, I was kind of annoyed with the whole part about him being half a second slower on qualifying in 2020 and how RBR "implored" him to make the seat his own. That's nearsighted at best, specially the part about the team giving him everything he needed. It is well know the environment is 110% Max centric and that we've already had 3 talented drivers in that second seat in 2 years and neither one of them could or can move this machine well (Sergio is struggling HARD). There is supposed to be pressure for results in F1, though I suspect the team is trying to bang its head against the wall on this one, hoping something sticks. They haven't been able to create a 2 driver team until now, and that is entirely on them.

One thing about Albon to Williams is that Albon is really good at working with engineers to improve the car. It was shown in videos from his DTM racing and also when Perez thanked Albon for putting time in to improve the car this year.
@aewallace81
@aewallace81 2 года назад
I didn't know Perez thanked him, decent of him although it must be frustrating for Albon. Considering Perez missed two rounds with covid last season, if you compare his points to this season after thirteen starts (not including the spring race) he has 8 extra points to show for it, that probably makes Albon feel a little better.

@@GARBO96 I don't know that it proves anything. Do you know what kind of work each of them are putting into DTM? It sounds like AA is spending every waking moment in the sim or testing for RBR so I can't imagine that he's doing much practice for DTM. I suspect that DTM may be just a side gig just to get AA competitive laps just in case he gets called to fill in for Perez/Max. I'm only speculating here, but it's not like DTM is a super prestigious series. So I'm sure RB wants more out of Alex's testing than seeing him win DTM. LL should have a completely different mindset, he is still fighting for his first big opportunity so he has to turn heads.

It doesn't matter what Toto thinks about Albon. Williams don't need Mercedes, they could get any engine they wanted if those engine suppliers would have them, so what Toto thinks about a customer team isn't pertinent here other than to present what he said. it doesn't need to be and shouldn't be taken on board by anyone as anything other than Toto feeding his own ego by thinking he can control the driver lineup of a customer team.

@@zTheBigFishz I agree, you don’t need to do something massive to put doubt in someone’s head. 2 incidents from the same person can start that doubt. It does kinda show the state of Alex’s mental fortitude to shake it off and recover. And it doesn’t help that he needs to adjust to the car customized to Max’s specifications. Gasly and Alvin imo were too raw to be thrown to the front of the grid. They needed time to mature in the midfield. Perez had the time with Force India and Racing Point. Just look how Riccardo is performing at McLaren or even how Alonso does not seem to make as much difference as he used to at Renault.
