The last of my rants (for now, LOL). I'm kinda disgusted with the current state of manufacturing in the crossbow world. We'll see.
This channel is about my love of the crossbow, hunting, and the outdoors. I hunt exclusively with the crossbow. I love it and I aim to help you love it, too!
MY NEW BOOK IS HERE! The Death by Bunjie Crossbow Method is now available on amazon.com. amzn.to/3zJbAI0
Check out my first book! The Death by Bunjie Crossbow Story (Confessions of a Crossbow Hunter) is NOW AVAILABLE on Amazon.com! You can check it out here: amzn.to/2Peq4aC

deathbybunjie
Bunjie (The O.B.) is a 2010 Excalibur Axiom Crossbow. After more than a decade of killing deer, hogs, squirrels, woodchucks, and even a bear, Bunjie is now semi-retired. Enter Bunjie III (or Bunjie '21, Bunjie 3.0, The Slick Black Cadillac of Crossbows) a 2021 Scorpyd Deathstalker 420, the result of trying various models and looking at dozens of them online for characteristics I liked. It is, in fact, a gift from a Friend of Bunjie, which goes to show how important Friends of Bunjie are to this channel and what an impact they can have. Bunjie III is a testament to modern crossbows, producing over .7 slugs of momentum and almost 140 ft-lbs of kinetic energy with stock arrows--at nearly 400 fps!
Bunjie, Jr., is my daughter Genevieve's crossbow, an Excalibur Micro Suppressor 355. This crossbow was also a much appreciated gift from a Friend of Bunjie, and it changed Death by Bunjie forever by inspiring Genevieve to become a part of our story as a second-generation crossbow hunter, and it also convinced me there is a benefit to a newer, faster crossbow (see our 2020 Maryland Doe Hunt).
Again, I am not sponsored by these companies. I am sponsored by Friends of Bunjie! (I'm not asking for gifts whatsoever--please don't feel like you should send me stuff! But I do appreciate the support I've received over the years! I'm just trying to express my appreciation for that.)
This channel is the result of combining my interest in filming and hunting...and music, too! My related channel, Yankee Militia, showcases my music. Some of the music is hunting-related, so check that out, too! The soundtrack for this channel is provided by my band, so the two are intertwined. The albums "Live Free or Kill" and "Zombies Gotta Eat, Too!" are available on Amazon.com and elsewhere. A third album is in the works.
All Hail Bunjie!

Ravin doesn’t warranty their products? Wow, didn’t know their warranty was fake! False advertising! You are going to get rich suing the pants off them! 🤦‍♂️ Sir, you don’t know what you are talking about. Second, your slow ass crossbow may get you dinner if it happens to walk within a few yards of you, but I don’t shoot tame animals…I shoot wild ones that you can’t get close too and spook easily. I like to have the ability to shoot and KILL a deer or bear out to 100 yards. I like to have equipment that is POWERFULL, that LASTS and is DEPENDABLE. You don’t have such a weapon, so don’t bash what you don’t have.

My dad and I started shooting crossbows this year. I spent quite a bit more money on Wicked ridge m370, he bought a Walmart center point Patriot 425. His Arrows are cheaper, his bow is faster and he’s hitting 60 yrd bullseye more consistently. I love my wicked ridge, it’s light, built in America and seems well built. I guess my point is, more money doesn’t always equal better performance. We’ll just have to see how they both hold up a year from now. 🤷🏻

Absolutely! I was recently given a Barnett Jackal. This is my first crossbow. It’s old (10 years old), it’s relatively slow by modern crossbow standards (305-310 fps), but by golly is it accurate! My neighbor has some Killer Instinct that shoots over 400 fps. He’s frustrated because my older, slower crossbow outshoots his by a mile, and I didn’t have to spend $600 on it. It’s much more accurate than his KI and it’s quieter too!

At 70 yrs of youthfulness my eyesight was failing to adjust to peep sight, pin, and target, with a compound bow, 😮After missing a doe which thankfully I did not injure, I could either quit deer hunting,( which is an addiction) or try a crossbow. I have been hunting with a wicked ridge 370 for four years and love it. It had kept me in the game. I also hunt with one gun a Remington 1100 that I bought in 1970. Several other guns are in my possession but only get used at the range. I believe if it works why change it.

I still have my Mission MXB320 from around 2013. It's super accurate, quiet, lightweight, and reliable. There have been numerous times I thought about upgrading, but with all the problems I hear people having with the newer crossbows, I think an upgrade would be a downgrade lol.

Well said. I have been hunting successfully in Africa with my $300 crossbow for three seasons now. In my opinion less is more. A cheap crossbow might not have all the fancy bells and whistles, but that just means that it has less that can break or fail when it matters most. My "Made in Taiwan", EK Archery Ballistic 410 performs consistantly and is deadly accurate - I have no reason to even look at another crossbow.

I went to a different shop yesterday to try and get some advice/help for my accuracy problems with my Tenpoint. Had a fascinating conversation with the bow tech there. They sell vertical bows, but also sell Tenpoint, Mission, and Ravin crossbows. He told me if I wanted a fairly bomb-proof crossbow, buy a Mission. The only problems they seen with Mission crossbows happen when the owner does something stupid. And even then, Mission has a lifetime no-questions-asked-warranty. All they have to do is call Mission, and Mission sends the parts right out, no questions asked. He said Tenpoint seems to be looking for reasons not to do warranty repairs, and for them to have to fight with the manufacturer is frustrating. All that said, I'm now looking for a replacement for my Tenpoint, and at the moment, Mission is leading the pack. Like you, I just want a non-finicky, durable, accurate crossbow, that just works. I also want the company to not be so nit-picky about proprietary stuff (aftermarket strings/cables, arrows, etc.). And it'd be delightful if I could change my own strings/cables. Mission ticks all those boxes for me, so I"m gonna start saving up. Thanks for this series of videos, Rich. Vertical bows aren't this hard (I used to own my own bow shop, BTW); crossbows shouldn't be either.

As always Rich speaks with wisdom. I personally have a Tenpoint RS 440 Havoc. I can tell you that I absolutely love this crossbow. But, I’m also going to be honest here and say that there are a couple things that I don’t like about it. 1. The price 2. The loud safety switch. I don’t know anyone that does like the price of Tenpoints crossbows? The safety switch can be eased on/off very slowly to where it’s inaudible, but, I’ve clicked it off in a rush before and a nice buck that I had in range absolutely heard it and spooked. I did get him later on in the season, but that day was spoiled by the noise made from the safety switch coming off. There is absolutely nothing wrong with going to Walmart and buying two low end crossbows for what is chump change in todays crossbow market. I know several people personally who do this. Just be expecting to get what you pay for. I know some friends I hunt with who would “NOT EVER” spend the money on a newer Tenpoint crossbow, not even the money for a Wicked Ridge. Some of them are going on their third season with these cheap crossbows, and one of them has had a very bad experience with them. I guess it just depends on the luck of the draw when it comes to that kind of engineering, but there’s absolutely nothing wrong with this approach imo. 40 days until the archery season opens here in northeast Ohio. Wishing everyone their best season yet! 💯🏹🎯🦌🥩

@robertwhite Absolutely! Love what you have! Nothing wrong with a more economical bow. It will kill deer with impunity. The whole point is do what you love. No one should have to explain why they happened to choose a crossbow that was less expensive. But you also don’t have to explain buying one that was more expensive. Enjoy hunting! I have been watching ur channel for quite some time now. I'm glad to see someone dedicate time to a crossbow only subject. Great videos and information u give. I've been using a crossbow since the early 90's when I had to stop shooting a compound. I have owned and shot many different brands . Ten point, Horton, Parker, PSE, Centerpoint, Killerinstinct. The 2 that I have and use now are the killerinstinct fierce405bc and wickedridge warriorG3 by ten point. Those 2 company's have the best warranty service that I have dealt with. U call and they dont give a big hassle or run around about taking care of ur issues and u can actually speak with a real person instead of emails. That's the main selling point for me in a company's product. Thanks for the great videos and info keep up the good work

My first crossbow was an Excalibur Micro Suppressor (2016). Killed 3 really nice bucks. Bought a Ravin R26 in 2019. After multiple string failures, broken limps, and cam replacements, it's sold. Hunted the last month of this season with the Micro. Purchased a Excalibur Wolverine for next season. Arrows will be compatible for both bows. No more cam bows or bows with internal cranks. I prefer to rope cock and If I need assistance I'll purchase the EXT Charger. Simplicity is key to me after my Ravin experience. I originally purchased the Excal for that reason. I drank the speed bow Koolaid and paid the price. Good luck with your channel. Total enjoy your content.

So I went to traditional archery $170 bow and keeping it in the kill zone to 20 yards. I don’t like all these cranks and 500fps and bows you have to rely on a dealer to take care of. That’s a good plan. I recently went to Bass Pro and bought the Killer Instinct Boss 405 for $300. I’ve been shooting it daily. It’s not high end, the safety is incredibly loud, the scope was garbage (switched it out with a Luepold), you can’t decock it and a few other inconveniences, but for the price I love it and I’m positive it’ll kill deer dead. Keep up the videos, I’m learning with each one.

I bought a new crossbow last year. I did my due diligence by researching on line. But. When it came to the purchase I went to a large local sports shop and picked up every crossbow in sight. Some were to heavy. Some were front end heavy. Some were just not comfortable to hold or carry. I found one that felt right for me. I am happy with my choice. While at the sports shop another gentleman was only looking for the most expensive crossbow, all he did was check the price tags. He was talking out loud a he did this. When he found the most expensive crossbow he took it to the counter and purchased it. I hope it was worth the money.

I had bought a DNZ scope mount that changed their torque specs from 25 in/lbs to 35 in/lbs on their packaging, "like all scopes can handle that", and my scope tube was crushed by the rings. DNZ gave me a big run around, saying all scopes that cant handle that torque are the equivalent of a junk Walmart scope. The CEO for DNZ is pretty ignorant. They post the torque specs, knowing that guys like us all are using torque wrenches like wheeler fat wrench, but CEO says to use Allan wrench, and the torque cant be achieved with a torque wrench. Are you telling me, your achieving by feel 35 inch pounds using a Allan? What a joke. So basically the CEO said, we post a torque spec on packaging, but it cant be achieved with common tools we know outdoorsman/hunters, gun enthusiast would commonly be using, in the industry (like a wheeler fat wrench), to just use a Allan.

I WOULDNT change a thing , I guess I am very Matthew's loyal but to this day I feel you can't go wrong with their products. I mean the Sub1 was a 3 year project before release, it had to be just so. And it shows by the quality and craftsmanship of this bow. Our local pro shop here was invited to shoot the Sub1 a year before its release they wanted to have it just right. I don't know if you know this but to be a Mathewss dealer and work on their equipment you have to go to Sparta WI to the school . They are very serious about taking care of their customers.

Finally shot the AXE 405 I bought last year. Holy Crap! I'm glad I got it sighted in using only 3 bolts cuz 2 of the bolts are trashed. One buried into my new 425 field point bag @ 20 yds. Vanes toast. The other is currently sitting in the broad head target long ways. The nock is sticking out one side and the front is sticking out the other side. 40yds and it was a fresh spot on the target. It's a heavy cuss when you pick it up but when you shoulder it, it is perfectly balanced. Excellent trigger.

Still shooting a wham o powermaster I got when I was 12. Same original string that I coated in shoo goop. Also a Barnett commando with a new string and 400 gr. bolts that has put one arrow into another arrow twice at 20 yards in the last 10 years. New stuff is leery for me. Gonna buy a new one as soon as I know what will last.

My crossbow broke too. So I ordered one from Barnett. A month later it hadn't shipped so I cancelled the order due to absolutely no customer support. Ive actually had good luck with Burris scopes. They are a go to brand, but not sure about their high tech ranging stuff. Seems when anything in tech world says smart tech, and top of the line, it ends up being opposite. We see this at my work as well. Our computer systems end up having more steps than less, and things are supposed to be getting better/smarter? We live in opposite world, and when you peel back the curtain of distractions, things are getting worse, than better.

My back up is sitting on a stores shelf at this time. Not sure what store, not sure what crossbow. That will be determined at the time of need. Maintain what you have and then replace if necessary. If I have to purchase and sight in before an evening hunt - so be it. The current crossbow KI bone collector 370 still is consistent yes, I’m the weak link here!

There's always a thought in the back of my head that something may happen with the crossbow. I've told my wife if I have a hunting trip coming up. Or if mine breaks during the season not to be mad but I'll be buying a new one. I've heard some horror stories of people's limbs breaking, then they either have warranty issues, or it takes forever to get a set of new limbs. Not only is it pretty annoying to deal with, it's also dangerous if they break. I don't think I should have to always be worried that a hunting trip will be ruined because I decided to use my crossbow lol..

I’m looking at the Mission Sub1 XR for my wife. (I have a Barnett Raptor STR). My thought is that she likes it, she will hunt more and be committed. When she doesn’t hunt, I will use it and love it. It seems like it will last and the co. seems solid but who knows. That being said, its hard to justify $2100 for a crossbow. I’ve looked at others and they all seem inferior. I’ve been researching and going to stores all over town, just can’t make up my mind. The affordable crossbows are heavy, too long, cheaply made. The sub1 is too expensive and who knows what problems I might still have. Tough.

It would be a great video experiment and I'm sure you'd gather plenty of viewers... how ever, going back to you get what you pay for, it certainly depends on the quality of the product. You pay for extras like a better fit and finish, smoother triggers, speed, quietness, weight, safety features and a real person to hear any complaint and provide service. Although cheap enough, if an item breaks on it, it's most likely a complete replacement... from China? Brand name does give you the security of knowing you can get it serviced... at least a minor item while on a hunting trip out of town. I don't know about you but an item has to feel good, look good as well as preform for me to "want" to carry it!

My first crossbow was a Carbon Express, Intercept Supercoil. At the time, it wasn’t the cheapest, but for about $600 I got an entire starter kit. It was a very accurate bow and I took several deer with it, including my first crossbow deer. I have many fond memories of it. I donated it to a friend whose daughter was interested in crossbow hunting. I switched to a Ravin R10, because I wanted to. I was fascinated with Ravin and Ravin company was located in the same town as where my grandparents lived & where I spent a lot of time growing up. Was there differences between the Ravin and the Carbon Express? Absolutely! But the Carbon Express was a joy! It properly introduced me to the world of crossbow hunting. By the way, my friends daughter successfully harvested her first crossbow deer with that same Carbon Express. Absolutely smoked that deer with a 25 yard shot!

I shoot a Mission MXB400 and the only issue is the cold weather and how it will shoot low. I got that figured out and no issues. Before my Mission Crossbow I shot a Mathews Z9 bow for about 6-7 years. In 12-13 years of shooting Mathews Z9/ Mission MXB400 no issues. I did have a string break due to a nock on a Mission Bolt being off a little bit and it eventually cut my string. Everything was free and I got a new Mission Bolt and a String for ZERO. That is just my opinion on a great company and customer service.

Rick, my only concern with that buy two bows at Walmart is this. The bow you featured is a KI. I went through 3 sets of cracked limbs with a Ripper 415. Have Nick talk to a real professional off season. There's plenty of experts in shops. I'm luck enough to live in NH close to Wyvern Creations. Dave has talked me out of the crossbow I wanted twice. Again, OFF SEASON. Dave has always help match me to bow that fit me rather than the expensive eye candy I wanted. If Nick ever makes it to NH, have him call Dave. He may not know it when he leaves Dave's, but the proof is in the pudding and I've never had bad experience with wyvern. I lost a crank to tenpiont nitro x and Dave not only gave me new crank handle but fix the problem as well. No questions at all. As for Burris. Well Rich. When I bought my latest crossbow a Wicked Ridge X4. Cost me $399 at Cabelas. I was all geared up to spend like $1500 on a Ravin. The sales associate at the time pointed me to the Wicked Ridge. Said save your money. It will kill anything out to 40 plus yards and here’s the best part. It costs a third less than the Ravin I was looking at and just as good. In 5 yrs or selling crossbows. That was the only one no one has brought back w a complaint or warranty issue for malfunctioning. Going into my third season as tempted as I am to get a new crossbow. Why fix something not broke. Changed cables n got an Oracle scope but still very reliable n familiar w it. It’s proven itself. Sometimes it pays just simply ask a sales associate whose been there for their off the record honest opinion.😊

I watched a video a gentleman put on here . He was simply testing 20inch bolts and 22 inch bolts. Let me tell you 500 fps or 300 fps wont make a dang difference on a Whitetail as loud as the bolts are in flight . His camera was set up at the target perffectly and they all sounded like a jet coming infor a landing . That wasnt his point of the video but the deer can definitely hear that coming at them regardless of how fast. I was shocked how loud they are.
@Deathbybunjie
@Deathbybunjie Год назад
I'm not sold on Arrow sound being all that important, I have a few reasons which I will share in future videos, but off the top of my head I would suggest that since they can only hear it for the last 10 yards or so it really doesn't make any difference. They are not moving in 10 yards of Arrow flight regardless of whether you're shooting 300 or 500 ft per second. Plus, with my crossbows, they are also loud that unless you're quite a ways away that crossbow going off is actually alarming. Way more alarming than the arrow would be, although I do believe the arrow continues to give them information about where the threat is coming from. Just my thoughts off the top of my head, and if you find that video send it to me I'd love to see it. I actually was going to do videos along those lines this summer but with my scope issues I'm having trouble getting that far.

Cheaper is great until you have a problem. I've read countless reviews of people who bought a cheap crossbow and nobody will service them, and/or bad customer service. Who wants to miss part of deer season because they can't get their crossbow fixed? Here in Michigan, everyone works on Tenpoint/ Wicked Ridge. I would pay $500 to $700 on a Wicked Ridge before buying any other cheap crossbows knowing you can always get it serviced everywhere, and there will always be parts available 10 years down the road. .

Nothing wrong with that either, BUT in theory you could buy 3 identical crossbows from Walmart for that much and not miss a single minute of the season. Just use one up and switch to the next one. When all three are used up, buy 3 new ones. 😁

@@Deathbybunjie 😆 that could work for some people! For me there are other considerations though....ie..Made in USA/support the local bow shop....i also take hunting trips out West in Nebraska, don't want to pack extra weapons....I am willing to pay more for superior technology.....[I've only owned one crossbow for the last nine years ($700 Tenpoint Turbo XLT2) and still love the Acu50 integrated rope, still much better technology than all other brands that carry a separate rope]....next bow will be with Acuslide because it is superior tech. (probably $1000 Tenpoint Venom X)....i can afford $1000 especially for superior tech.

Mine have not as of yet but I don’t shoot it every day. Just as accurate as my ten point siege. I will never spend that kind of money again(tenpoint) on a crossbow. The decocking is an awesome feature but do I need it? No. Matter of fact I don’t plan on buying another crossbow now. Hope I don’t need to. If I do Excalibur is what I’ll look at for it’s simplicity.

Any crossbow that shoots around 400 fps is going to do well as the game doesn't have as much time to react after you release the arrow. The 400 fps crossbows have been around long enough they should have the kinks/defective stuff worked out by now so they should be reliable. I like your idea of getting two of them. We hunt with rifles too and always bring two rifles on the trip although both are different. One is the primary one and the other is the backup. We shoot them enough we can adapt quickly but not so much with a crossbow so two of the same make, model might be a good idea.
