As a 老外 working in a Chinese company with all Chinese coworkers , having lots of tattoos has been an interesting experience. I can’t say for sure whether I’ve been misjudged or characterized by my colleagues, but I do notice their stares linger and stay fixed on the tattoos in meetings, conversations, etc. It was strange at first but I got used to it.

On the upper right of the options window that comes up, you will see the link "custom". The double standards are interesting here. If a man has them, he's a thug, gangster, mean, or intimidating. If she has them, she's cool, cute, it's a hobby, and she's creative. I've heard similar things in the states here but probably not to this extent.

As a Chinese myself growing up, all I saw in Chinese gangster movies especially the ones from Hong Kong, were gangsters with tattoos, most of them all had tattoos, so I think it is films, some interaction or real experiences from people, that have ingrained this stereotype view into society in general, and it's not just in China, around the world, it's the same stereotypical view around the world. Person with tattoo = bad person, gangster, must avoid, danger etc. But, times have changed, more younger people are getting tattoos now, breaking this old age myth that people with tattoos are all bad people. I myself have a full sleeve tattoo, I too get cold steers, the usual snickering, just walking past complete strangers on the street all the time, so for me this is normal, doesn't matter where I go, which city, you'll always get this reaction, only people with tattoos will understand this reaction. As times have changed since 1990's, people also changed with the times. When we all watched those old Chinese gangster movies, or see those pictures of all those Japanese Yakuza with tattoos, I knew they were bad people, but when I saw someone like that in real life, they turned out to be the opposite, & not a gangster, but just a normal person. The reason why they got those type of tattoos is simply because they liked the artistic style of those tattoos, it's not because they used to be a gangster or anything, they were just a normal person who really liked tattoos, the artistic side of tattoos. I ended up becoming friends with this person, they're really down to earth, very likeable, they're funny to, just like any other normal person. This video clip shows us that, being a man with tattoos, are more likely to be stopped by police all because we have tattoos, yet a woman with full sleeve tattoos, is less likely to be stopped by police, this is double standards in society, not every guy who has a tattoo is automatically a gangster, a hoodlum, a trouble maker, or is someone without a job. Vice versa for women too. I just think that people who judge others based on their tattoos, are really sad, but I don't blame them, I just blame media, films that wrongly depicting people with tattoos as always bad people.

Fascinating. Thank you. As someone Chinese American, I decided to get my first tattoo for my mom when she passed from cancer when I was 16. Later on, I decided to get more tattoos because I liked them. My family believes people with tattoos are criminals or bad people, so I had to hide them from them. I was even told that if I get tattoos I'd be disowned LOL. It is strange though because my stepmom adores certain singers like Adele, or Lady Gaga who have a lot of tattoos. Also, one time when I was sitting on an airplane, this chinese guy was speaking mandarin and walking by me and said, "Wow this girl is scary looking." XD And I said, "How come I don't find myself scary," And he just was so shocked that I could speak mandarin, and he was like.."Oh...haha..good..good." and his wife had to apologize for him LOL. I think ultimately the stereotyping against people with tattoos is really unfortunate, no one likes having their morals or personality assumed because of the way they look. I hope that chinese society can bring more awareness and positive media representations in China.
@johnyossarian9059
@johnyossarian9059 Год назад
You got stereotyped once for your tattoos that you chose to get. How many Chinese in America got stereotyped over the years because of their looks and ethnicity that they didn't choose? Verbally and physically abused? I wish American society can stop attacking Chinese in America. It's been going on since th 19th century ffs

在中国纹身不能当公务员,不能入伍,日本可能更严格一点,正常的职员都不能有纹身,说老实话我看A片都讨厌看到女主角有纹身。In China with tattoos, you cannot be a civil servant or enlist in the army. Japan may be a little stricter. Normal employees are not allowed to have tattoos. To be honest, I hate seeing female protagonists with tattoos even when I watch porn.

@sleepyhead6468
@sleepyhead6468 Год назад
@@johnyossarian9059 South China used to be Baiyue lands. Many migrated Southwards to Southeast Asia but many Baiyue women intermarried with Chinese men from the North when the Chinese soldiers came to conquer the South. This policy of intermixing was recorded in ancient Chinese records. Most of the Southern Chinese have at least 10% - 30% DNA that are Viet, Thai or other Southeast Asian group. Yet when you ask them, they will tell you that as far back as they know, they are "fully Chinese". Phenotype wise, many South Chinese look more similar to modern day Southeast Asians. Southern Chinese tend to have round eyes with deep double eyelids. They have more pronounced brow ridge with sloping forehead. As a result, their eye sockets usually seem to be sunken into the skull. Nostrils also are usually wider and more flaring. They also tend to have darker skin and shorter. All of these features that are more common in Southern Chinese and not as common in Northern Chinese/Koreans are also common in Southeast Asians. So using Dna, historical records, and phenotyping of the original Southern Chinese migrants to Southeast Asia in the earlier 20th century, it is pretty clear how the Baiyue peoples look like.

Having tattoo on your body reflects your decision making, not the decoration or tattoo per se. Question like, what if I don't like it later on? and I cannot get rid of it? Thoughtful or thinking long term people probably wouldn't have it. Corporate world will see you as an impulsive person, and probably a little bit wild, not good for business. My Boss once told me about tattoo, if you have the most powerful sexy sport car, would you put sticker on it? if you think it will make it look cheap, why would you want it on your skin? don't you worth more than your car?
