April 1st - Kingston, Ontario and it is unexpectedly announced that the La Salle Causeway Lift Bridge will close until further notice by Public Services and Procurement Canada - the responsible agency of government.
Later, it is stated that an incident occurred on March 31st - but no details are provided

I would love to see an engineering explanation of the failure. A single buckled beam seems like something that could be replaced cheaper than the total demolition and replacement of the bridge, something else had to be found to be defective.

@@randyb1890 that explanation may come in the report of the inquiry that is being conducted. It’s suggested that examination revealed more than the obvious damage to the overall structure

I think we all share that sentiment - it seems hardly possible that before very long there will be little or no trace of this historic engineering landmark that has for so long been a Kingston icon..

An incident on March 30th caused a major structural component to buckle. The cause has not been declared, but after examination, a decision was taken to demolish it and begin research into a temporary replacement before a permanent one can be chosen
