I have had the same Jade plant for about 7 years. I have never pruned it. It is in a 14 inch pot now with about 20 of its babies and a few other plants as well.

Thanks to your videos I am getting yelled at by my wife. She noticed I have been watching jade plant care videos because we have several in a single pot that needs transplanting and now I want to propagate more for Bonzai. I've been eyeballing the spider plant as well. She is not happy when I mess with the plants LOL

@@PlantingwithTej It will get worse in Feb/March when I have every window in the house filled with seeds for my garden LOL. I just hope the roots are not intertwined. If so I may have to just get cuttings and restart. This is the reason I do not like multiple plants in one pot like many box stores sell, especially with succulents.
@PlantingwithTej
@PlantingwithTej 2 года назад
@@velvanae wow I do the same I start my seeds at same time and keep them in windows of my kitchen and living room. I also really like the look of single trunk. Just one plant in a pot. I have around 40 jade plants. I don’t have multiple in one pot. Even if yours are intertwined you can separate them. Jade roots are very thin. It will be easy to separate. New cuttings will take a long time to mature for you to make them bonsai.

I love these jade plant videos! I love plants and have just recently started accumulating them. I got a jade plant yesterday from a woman that didn’t care to revive it. It is drooping heavily all over the tree. It was very dry when I got it yesterday so I gave it a good water (I read they need a good watering and then a drought period). Could you help me with some tips on how to revive this plant? I wonder if it needs pruning? And how often I should water/ how much sun it needs? Thank you!
@PlantingwithTej
@PlantingwithTej 2 года назад
Thank you Hannah! Yes you are right about the watering that’s what I do with my jade. Let them dry out between the waterings to prevent root rot. Are you saying the tree is droopy or it’s dropping leaves heavily? To revive it make sure to check everything. 1) look for any pests. Check the plant throughly. You can rinse it or wipe it gently with wet cloth. 2) If you find stems are soft and droopy, you can check for root rot. But could be from under watering as well. Take the plant out of the pot and check for soft and mushy roots which breaks easily. 3) Don’t put it in full sun right away if it was very dry. Keep it in indirect light until leaves are plump. 4) Don’t prune it yet. Wait for some time for plant to settle down at its new place and let it get healthy first. But you can cut off any dead or not healthy looking branches so that plant can use its energy to revive. You can watch my video on pruning. Also check out my other Jade videos, you will get all the care information. If you have any further questions feel free to comment. Also update me on its recovery. I would love to know! Thank you 😊

Your welcome. I used dawn dish soap. But I removed all the new grown branches where it’s hard to get. Yes they come back if you don’t continue to do the process until they are all gone. I was doing it every two weeks. So after pruning the effected branches, I got them on new growth again. Also check other plants near by. I was only treating my jade plants. But some of my other plants got them and they spread to my jade plants again. If you have the time start inspecting them every few days or sooner while doing the treatment You need to stay on top of it for few weeks. Then you can get rid of them completely. Also they hide in the new growth and in between branches and hard to get places. You can use ear cleaning buds dipped in rubbing alcohol too. But I have not used it and I don’t like to use any pesticides if not necessary. Mostly I get rid of pests by dish soap except for fungus gnats. The other other pest I get is spider mites. It’s my first time getting mealy bugs on my plants. I’ll let you know in the future if I end up trying something different. Let me know if you got rid of them completely. The new growth that I cut, I soaked them in soapy water and used tooth brush to clean in between the tight places. You can use the toothbrush on the plant as well to reach the tight places. But be very gentle with the brush so you don’t damage the leaves.

@@PlantingwithTej Thanks for your reply. Agree that we need to be persistent and regular with the treatment else it gets very difficult to get rid of the mealy bugs. Fortunately, my jades are spared for now, but I m afraid as neighbouring plants are infested and so soon they may also get. Have already started with the soap treatment. Using toothbrush is indeed good idea for difficult to access places, thanks!

Hi tej, have you ever dealt with fungus nats?
@PlantingwithTej
@PlantingwithTej 2 года назад
Yes I have and they are really hard to get rid of when you have too many plants in the house and you keep bringing new plants in. The first time I got them from a bag of soil which I added in a lot my plants. They slowly spread by the time I figure out. I got rid of them by replacing the top soil and watering from the bottom and keep the top 2 inch soil dry. It worked then in the summer I started a lot of seeds indoors. They came back then slowly spread to all my plants because I had started watering them from the top again after I got rid of them. I have tried few things I watered all my plants with the water with hydrogen peroxide. Most of them were gone but I still had a lot left. Then I bought mosquito dunks. I would break a small piece and put in a few gallon water jug. Left it over night and start watering my plants with that water for few weeks. It got rid of them completely but I was always watering from the bottom. Specially the plants that are more susceptible to fungus gnats. Now I maybe see one or two gnats here and there. But it doesn’t bother me. Always make sure the soil you buy from store doesn’t have fungus gnat larvae in it. If it does you can cook the soil in the microwave or put in a black airtight bag and leave it the hot sun in summers to kill the larvae. You have to be patient and keep watering with the same solution until they are all gone. It may take 4-6 weeks depending on how many plants you have. Try watering most of them at the same time if possible and separate the plants that are highly infected. Also shake the plants before you buy to check if it has fungus gnats. If you end up buying that plant keep it separate and start watering it with the mosquito dunk water. You can do combination of these things or whatever is available to you. But you need to stay on top of it until you get rid of them all. I found mosquito dunks be the most effective method. Always inspect you plants thoroughly once a month at least ti make sure there are no pests.

@@PlantingwithTej Thank you for the info. The only way I got rid of the mealybugs was to get rid of the plants before they infected all the plants in my home. I did so much research on how to get rid of the mealybugs. For about 7-8 months I relentlessly tried neem oil, removing them with alcohol on a swab, I even resorted to pesticides in the end but nothing worked. After treating the plants, in a week or two, the mealybugs were back. I have several plants over 33 years old, I didn't want them to get infected and this is why I gave up after trying for so many months. I kept them in a separate room while treating the infected orchids for the mealybugs. Mealybugs spread to other plants easily and are very difficult to get rid of. They can live in the soil and this is probably why they kept coming back. If it ever happens again, I will try dawn. Thank you again for the tip!
@PlantingwithTej
@PlantingwithTej 2 года назад
Your welcome. I’m sorry to hear that. Yes they keep coming back. You have to constantly treat it. But also caught it early on. I mean they were on most of my Jade plants but mostly on the top growth and sometimes on the trunk hiding under the leaves. But they are gone mostly. I haven’t been treating the plants anymore. But when I water them I check thoroughly if I see one I get rid of it. But I haven’t seen any lately. They got on my favourite plants so I couldn’t give up.

I just pruned my large jade for the first time. It's 4 years old and it gave me sooo many cuttings and leaves . I am gonna watch your video on propagating now. One question plz, tiny white spots on leaves, is this normal, they are just pin sized. Maybe calcium in the water? Do yours have these?
@PlantingwithTej
@PlantingwithTej 2 года назад
I’m glad you pruned your Jade. First cuts will dry and turn brown then brown part will fall off and new branches will start growing within few weeks. In my propagating video I showed two methods. Please use the soil method. It’s much faster and has 100% success every time. Try to pot up the branches right away in dry soil like I showed otherwise they start bending in few days and later on it’s very challenging to pot them as they won’t stand up straight in the soil due to bend in the main stem. But don’t water it until one week so the cut can dry. Yes you are right about tiny white spots they are mineral deposits in the tap water. All my plants get them sometimes. I use a microfibre cloth dipped in warm water and gently wipe the leaves. They come off easily.

When start seeing some roots coming out of the bottom. You can also hold your plant from the main stem and pull it out when it’s dry like I showed in my watering video to see if the pot is filled with roots. If it is then yuh can repot if. If you are not sure about doing that, just repot it in a little bit if bigger pot than it already is in in. Like one inch bigger diameter. As long you dint over water it, it will be fine in a bigger pot.

Before you make any cuts water your plant thoroughly. When all the leaves are plumped you can prune all the big branches and let the dry for a while after you cut them. Let them callus over. It may take few weeks. When the cut is completely dry and firmed a callus over them you can pot it up.
