I average $7-$9 for 10-15 miles per delivery. My tips are an average of $3. My area just isn't that good. That's Ohio for you. I drive 45 minutes from my home city to dash because I can't even schedule a dash here, orders are in such low volume. And down there, you have 2 choices. Deliver in a super dense area, likely getting a ton of apartment building and complex orders, which slow you way down. Or you deliver for the upper middle to upper class people, which can mean a round trip average of 15-20 miles per delivery just for tip averages of an extra $2-3 on average.

I'm also in San Diego, but I usually dash south... National City is often more busy than Chula Vista, but the Door Dash zone is also much smaller which means often deliveries take you out of that zone. If other nearby zones are busy, great. But if only National City is popping, then I have to spend time driving back. And sometimes I just want to head back in that direction anyway. Chula Vista zone is a lot larger so it's less likely that deliveries take me out of the zone, but it's also less busy. Thanks for your channel and tips though!

What sucks for me is that I get Walmart orders so much. It’s groceries so your always waiting for them to bring it out then you have to get all the groceries out of your car. And what makes it bad is it’s always 3 dollars for every order. That is ridiculous, seriously they need to change that. It actually makes me so mad. So I developed another metric I use on top of DOLLAR/MILE. I look at DISTANCE/TIME. I'm in Mesa, AZ and I border 5 market segments- 2 busy, 3 not so much (and larger- less dense population). I look at MILEAGE (they LOVE to offer me 10, 11, 12, 12.9 mile orders). Here is another way to put it into perspective a 12.9 mile (be real 13 miles) order offering $14. In my area that 13 Miles is going to take 26 Minutes (30 minute round up for locating stuff because apartment people aren't the best at including decent directions to apartment # 7,107 of 15,000... lol). That's 30 Minutes out of your market/hot spot. In my area that takes you either far south- Gilbert, Queen Creek, Chandler or Far East- Apache Junction- none of which I've found to be very lucrative. So then you have to drive back- another 30 minutes to your starting point/hot spot. That is an hours worth of work for $14 - minus expenses. Not a good deal. AS a new guy I unfortunately had to take a couple of orders like that to get it beat into my head that it wasn't profitable. You get MUCH more attractive offers in San Diego than Mesa, AZ. I also clear my TRIP odometer at the start of my shift and then compare TOTAL MILES DRIVEN to TOTAL EARNED it helps me hit home mentally if I'm going in the right direction financially for myself or not.

If I accepted every offer I’d be broke 🤷‍♂️😂DD sends new so many upside down orders . $3 drive 6 miles . $4 drive 7 miles . Even $10 for 10 miles is a waste cause it takes me so far out of my area to get another order so it’s really 20 miles 30 min for that $10? And what if the foods not ready then it’s 40 min for that $10 🤷‍♂️😮🚨🤯

My strategy isnt so much to do with miles per delivery but rather drive time. Because Id rather accept a delivery that might be a few more miles, but is all freeway, over one that is a little closer but is all surface streets with a bunch of lights, stop signs, school zones, and turns etc. At least that's for deliveries that go outside of my preferred starting points and would require me to have to drive all the way back after. As a guide, I try to work in 20 min incriments where I bring in a minimum $8-10 every 20 min. Of course this is not always possible so I will borrow time from the next 20 min incriment if the pay is also in proportion with that. So if a delivery is going to take 40 minutes to complete, it would need to pay at least $20.

I'm new to Dashing but I don't think that the miles to order is a given as a strategy everytime. I took a twenty dollar order the other day without checking out the miles. It turned out to be around a 30 mile distance. I got a ten dollar tip on top of that. So my travel time is a dollar a minute which is very good. I think always looking for miles is not a failsafe strategy especially when Doordash doesn't always reveal the tip...

I sort of tried this yesterday because it was slow, and I was getting fishball after fishball (no tip). If you live in a $200,000 house and DD has me doing sub-contracting work for Papa John's, there'd better be a tip involved. Mfer grabbed his two pizzas, mumbled "thank you," and slammed the door - I'd like to think it was because he was embarrassed and wasn't expecting a face-to-face meeting, lol. Today, I will decline all $3.00 - $4.00 deliveries and ignore the "Your acceptance rate will drop to 98%" malarkey.

I have a DD question that I cannot find the answer to anywhere. It is about the "balance" that shows in your earnings. I have found in my app that the "balance" is sometimes displayed and other times it is not.I have also found that this changes for no apparent reason. The other day I noticed that my balance was $5 less than my earning. The next day it was $15 less than my earnings. The day after that it was $20 less. Then the amt that went into my bank acct was my balance. I contacted DD to see why it was less and what happened to my $20. They said that it was because someone tipped me from a previous week.I have had tips after the week was over and understand the concept but that would make my balance go up and not down. Then DD told me that it was because I ended my dash in the next pay period. Also not true. It had ended at noon on Sunday. They said they will put the $20 on my next deposit and then it was showing in my balance but then disappeared again so not sure if I'll actually get it next week. Has anyone else experienced this?
@YourDriverMike

Never noticed anything like that, that's good that you picked up on the change. What you can do is screenshot that balance screen once you're done driving so you have documentation if it ever decreases again.

I think he’s using it as an approximation of gas and maintenance expenses for his vehicle, (which is what that number represents as a deduction.) That being said, it depends on your car, it is after all only an average.
@YourDriverMike
@YourDriverMike 3 года назад
Hi Zeth, to clarify the standard tax deduction includes all general costs for operating a vehicle for business. This includes gas, maintenance, wear and tear etc. This is a general deduction that the IRS gives independent contractors. Since these are associated costs I subtract these costs from my total gross revenue to equal a total net revenue after expenses (before taxes). This is meant to be illustrative as I am not a tax professional or CPA; it's not meant to be legal financial or tax information.

This also confused me. I get that it's an approximation but in a real world application paying $30 to drive 52 miles seems very high. If this was accurate, I would be spending over $500 a month on car expenses which I know is hundreds more than I actually do. The cost can be significantly lower depending on the driver.

@YourDriverMike
@YourDriverMike 4 года назад
Hi Tran, as long as you are online you are considered 'available for business' so yes those dead miles are still deductible. If you paused your Dash or ended your Dash and restarted those miles would not be deductible as you're not available for business. (I'm not a CPA or tax professional so this is not meant to be legal tax advice)

here is how i track miles... write down mileage at the start of shift and location (usually my house as i turn on the ap when i get in my car) then ill mark down the hotspot i want to go towards in my notebook with an HS and head there... if i accept an order thats not that hotspot ill mark it when i arrive as well as the delivery address...then i go inside pick up and deliver... it is too time consuming to mark all the exact mileage everytime you change direction and as long as your keeping track of where your going, this method is fine for accounting purposes... taxes only want a log that makes sense and daily mileage...now there are also apps on your phone for tracking where you go but running half a dozen apps taxes my phone to much, and i actually much prefer to write it down by hand..

Now that's not including tip obviously, that's just me accepting an order and praying a damn tip comes in an hour later to make it worth it. I first started and would see videos saying dont take the $3 orders that are like a mile away, yet idk. I would rather bang out a bunch of $3 orders I think and only be driving a mile or 2 on each plus tip over driving 7 some miles not even getting a dollar a mile. I just take basically everything and run em out till I'm done for the day. But I do hate beating up my poor mazda 6 like this. 😝
