Hey guys, today I'm planting onions. I share the mistakes I made last year and tell you what to look for when picking the right kind of onions for you. I also show you how I spaced my onions and how deep I planted them. I hope this helps, and thanks for watching.

Hey everybody, I had fun trying to grow onions after not planting them for so long, but I'm hoping they turn out better than last year's. Either way, it's always exciting to be out in the garden. Thanks for watching, I appreciate it.

Gary, thanks for sharing that. I followed the instructions that came with the onions, but experience is the best teacher. Great comment. Thanks for watching.

I had a similar problem with onions..just couldn’t figure out what I was doing wrong, so I put them aside to concentrate on other things. Still haven’t picked it back up. But I did start growing Egyptian Walking Onions, and I have Multiplying Onions on order. I like the idea of having perennial onions.

I put them aside for several years, so we'll see if this works. I'm not familiar with onions, but I have heard of Egyptian onions, but I didn't know they were perennials. You learn something new every day. Thanks for sharing.

@@jonbussey5353 they’re really interesting plants..they form a bulbil on top at the end of the season..has five or six seed onions which cause the stem to bow down to the soil..and those seeds root..causing the onions to “walk” and propagate.

I'm going to have to read up on these. This sounds really interesting. Do you harvest them like a green onion?

@@jonbussey5353 yes we’ve just been using them as green onions for two years, while the bed fills out. This year we’ll dig some up and divide the bulbs. We’ll see how the bulbs taste then. Makes a small bulb, about as big as a golf ball..

@billelrod1779 This is definitely something I would like to know more about. Thanks for sharing. This sounds like something not everyone has heard of. Great comment.

You got everything looking real good, one thing I'd absolutely add is some peatmoss, and I also topdress with Dr earth dry ammendments every two weeks. Also if you have clay heavy soil I'd add sand and mix well before planting. Cheers from montana!

Dallas, thanks for saying that. I wasn't sure what Dr. Earth dry was so I looked it up. It sounded pretty good. Do you think it's better than rabbit manure? I've heard about adding sand, but I have also heard the wrong kind makes it worse, so I've always been leery about using it. Thanks for the great comment . By the way, I worked at a refinery in Billings. How do you stand the cold weather? You guys are tough up there.

Yes the Dr Earth breaks down super fast and is quickly available for the onions. I've used all kinds of sands and never had an issue. I like it mixed with my compost and peatmoss because it drains super fast. That allows watering every day with no issues. Love montana brother. I'm north of Missoula so we're not quite as cold over here but it's still cold as balls. Lol

Another reason I like Dr Earth is because I can buy 12lb bag for $30. It lasts a long time. 2tbsp per gallon of soil. You really can't overdo it. Nice and easy.

Thanks for sharing that. Putting it in with compost would be easier to get the right ratio. Great idea.

When you say gallon of soil, are you mixing it in a raised bed? It sounds like it wouldn't take too much for a row of beans or peas. Appreciate the comment.

It isn't how long the day is, but rather how short the night is. At first thought that sounds like the same thing, but it isn't. Night is always dark, daytime can be bright dim and everywhere in between. They can trick hops to grow in Florida, with low wattage far red lights (Not infrared). Turn on the lights for half an hour around midnight, and the plant is fooled into thinking there are two short nights, instead of one longer one. The lights don't have to be very bright.

Phil, I found your comment very interesting. I never thought of it in terms like that. Thanks for sharing and thanks for watching.
