I keep asking myself if there's anything that you can't doomify, and then I remember that Mick Gordon himself challenged you to doomify Crazy Bus and you delivered. Why am I still surprised at this point?
No way...... No fucking way. All whats missing is a collab with hulshult and a collab with gordon himself.... And i think this would bring about the demonic invasion lost izalith...
Besides the phenomenal music that is absolutely worthy of being in a AAA game, the bits of insight into not just the process of making such awesome music but also the behind-the-scenes interviews we occasionally get with current AAA musicians, composers, directors, etc.. I am not someone who makes music or really has a lot of interest in doing so as of yet but hot damn do I get absorbed with every video you put out with the knowledge and satisfaction of everything.
Building music is a craft, and I am all over that. Knitting, crocheting, gardening, designing, arranging music, editing, building…. My watchlist goes on. ^^ Seeing how things are made just feels very rewarding to me. Even the most minor things are there for a reason, and Geoff explains that very reason so well.
@@GeoffPlaysGuitar This entire track feels a lot more „dramatic“ than Ludwig‘s theme. Ludwig was short and direct, while this feels like a story is told, as if it has chapters! Your research really shows, as well as the collaborative effort. Beautiful.
@@OscarGreenworth I'm sorry, while I agree in energy and nostalgia, Gael is such a fucking masterpiece from beginning to end. One is the culmination of every moment leading to soul of cinder and a call back to the Lord who brought you here. Midir is an epic fight against a canonically near invincible dragon so to that I agree it'd be fantastic industrialized. But Gael's is battling a ravenous slave to the last gods at the collapsing of reality itself and is just so damn phenomenal. Gael would've been a fantastic choice in my eyes
This is what the Abyss watchers felt like when they were burying entire kingdoms. Awesome job dude! This is way better than the Ludwig one in my opinion!
Mr. Geoff you are an absolute madlad, this was insane. I rate it a full 666 DOOM. The choir?? David Levy?? All of the above??? You only get better. Keep it up dude!
Chills man. Literal chills are what I'm feeling while listening to this. You combined one of my favorite Dark Souls characters/factions with one of my favorite game soundtracks (or a worthy imitation of it). I could even hear some elements from the Ancient Gods dlc in the background. Beautiful, just beautiful!
This blew my mind. Who knew a Doom x DS3 mash up would be so well put together. Props to you for putting the time to develop this. Looking forward to more music from you!!
This is so fucking sick, I was expecting a mish-mash of different dark souls themes that would be recognizable but this abyss watchers focus is actually sick. Sister Friede's or Gael's theme would be even more amazing
Absolutely thrilled you had a chance to work with one of the guys who did Doom's music, that's freakin' awesome. I loved the choir included in the mix, as it really made it feel more Dark Souls-y. I think your right that Dark Souls tends to be more dissonant than harmonic, which might be why I prefer Bloodborne on a personal level. Still, this piece was a blast. Maybe the only negative that comes to mind is it's hard to hear the female vocal from the synth for me. Other than that, it's a jam. Have fun with your original compositions, I'll give 'em a listen if they show up here on youtube!
This was an absolutely legendary collab. It's been genuinely amazing to see how far your channel has come since you started these Argent Metal covers, and I know things are only going to get better from here. Thank you for everything, Geoff. Keep the metal coming, until it is done.
I'm crying a little. Part way through the final product I suddenly remembered watching my uncle play Legacy of Kain; Soul Reaver. If that series were ever to be resurrected, I can't help but feel it should sound like this.
I find it ironic how often parents went after games as a hobby, and yet some of the most memorable moments in kid's lives are playing games with their parents.
I think that metal waltz would be a beautiful Sub-genre of metal to delve deeper into! Both this and Lidwig are beautiful pieces to listen too and I would love to hear another someday
As an avid listener of Demon Souls, Dark Souls and Bloodborne soundtrack, I would like to disagree with the point of Souls series not having memorable soundtrack because quite a few of them do. Just look at Gywn's theme for example, when it came back in Dark Souls 3 the reaction of many gamers instantly recognise the theme. Other examples of memorable soundtrack is Sif, Taurus demon, Gywndolin, Vordt, and many others. But overall the rendition of the new OST was nice additionally Abyss Watchers soundtrack was lacking a bit of oopmh after the build up and you guys delivered. Overall really respectable soundtrack, the but I prefer the dark and dreary theme of the originals. (Note: I love doom soundtrack and killing floor soundtracks but I'm just saying Souls OST has this different kind of feeling to them.)
I feel like the Soulsborne soundtracks are almost equal to the doom soundtracks purely because both game franchises use their songs sparingly by only giving you the best bits during the most adrenaline fuelled part of the gameplay. I don’t know it’s hard to explain fully
I really like the soulsborne soundtracks not because they are the best craziest coolest songs (like doom kinda), bit because every song is so tailored to the environment and adds so much to the boss. The composing team does a really good job with thematic elements, especially with bosses like gwyn, bloodstarved Beast in Bloodborne, and Midir. Also I agree with you that the originals are better in this case.
I think it's unfair too to compare Dark Souls to something like Doom or Star Wars because EVERYBODY and their grandma know those soundtracks. So of course when you hum the music you're going to know. Dark Souls while being a popular series isn't anywhere near the level of popularity Star Wars or Doom is on so of course when you hum some tracks from Dark Souls not many people are going to be like "oh yeah I know that one". If Dark Souls was on that same level then it'd be a different story. Also, not trashing on the music here because it's obviously such a badass track (I love gothic metal like this) but I feel like it doesn't really respect what Dark Souls is. It's supposed to be a dark, slow, and depressing game unlike Doom where it is also dark but gives off a vibe completely opposite of Dark Souls where it tries to make you feel like an overconfident alpha badass who is out to hunt and kill demons. Whereas Dark Souls makes you feel like a lowly undead who is out on a quest that requires careful planning and a certain respect for your enemies to survive as one wrong move will result in you being nothing but a bloody pulp. In Dark Souls the enemies are the alphas not you and the music or lack of it definetly helps with the intimidation. If that all makes sense. Still though Dark Souls with Doom music looks and sounds badass.
That intro and that bit before the last chorus made me feel things man... It's one thing to make good music but it's another thing entirely to capture the feel of a series. How should I describe it, a silent cacophony? Imagine if this man covered Slave Knight Gael and Demon of Hatred's themes Also, would love to hear more atmospheric tracks from you as well!
What about music of Dead Space 2 in the style of doom? When dead space 2's action ramps up it really ramps it up. But holy moly my boy Geoff is going places !
This might be the best one yet. The choir is simply S tier and works surprisingly well with the heavy tone, and Levy's mastering is amazing. Good shit, as always, keep up the great work.
To everyone that participated in that, great job.. this sounds so good, really neat sound design, good arrangements and production.. this was awesome.. cheers
I love this arrangement. I will add that I think the original was more somber for Game Direction purposes. The Abyss Watchers are the first like Really-Big-Deal boss fight in DS3, and the contrasting sound track is kind of meant to give the player pause. Like 'something is wrong and tragic about these Abyss Watchers here'.
This is by far the best one yet. The souls series is one of my favorite series in its visual, audio, and story presentation. This adapts that aesthetic while staying true to the feeling of the games. I always felt the Abyss watchers fight could have used a more aggressive soundtrack, and this fulfills that perfectly. Cannot wait for the originals!
as someone who played ds3 and loved the theme in game, this elevates it even higher great job geoff and david. also try riven of a thousand voices from destiny 2 one day.
The scratchy ambient sound over the top of the whole songs makes this something I wouldn't repeat play like the Ludwig: The Holy Blade cover you did...
Somehow, someway, this invoked the feeling of fighting them for the first time without knowing the mechanics of the souls series as in depth as I do now. That feeling of "oh fuck, ah shit, wait what is that, oh nononoNONONONO". Truly a Waltz of the Argent Abyss.
The Abyss Watchers still remains my favorite boss in Dark Souls 3. The concept, plus the mournful music makes it just simply fantastic. Now its been Argentized its ascended to true god-tier music.
Been here since some of the first "what is xyz sounded like DOOM" videos, and from one music producer to another, Geoff, god damn are you an inspiration on par with the likes of the composers like David, Mick and many others. Thank you for all you do.
You know I will fucking like these remixes. This gave me fucking chills like nothing before, it made me almost cry it was that good. Please dont stop these remixes. I really hope you do this for games like PayDay, Warhammer, maybe more witcher? Keep doing this please.
This is absolutely amazing. I think if I could listen to this whilst fighting the actual Abyss Watchers, I would end up waiting for all 3 to spawn and then run in and just go absolutely ham with the biggest weapon I could find
Super Sick Project. I feel like this stuff is what shows u that there are no limits on what genre/types of music can be combined to create something new. Fking looooove it!
Really Awesome!!!!! The Abyss Watchers OST is probably my favourite piece of music of all time. I listen to it many times a day. I thought your version of it was really inspired and refreshing. One thing i thought was missing however was the chimes/bells. The bell toll is one of, if not the most distinctive sounds in the original OST. I Think finding a way to fit the bell sound, or maybe something closer to an anvil hit into your Doom version would have let the abyss watchers speak out more in the music. Really well done!!!!!
"Of all the wickedness the Lords of Cinder can produce, we will send unto them only you." "Ashen One, RIP AND TEAR" "You cant just SHOOT A HOLE in the center of IRITHYLL"
Found your Spotify after listening to a YT livestream of Doom-esque music to listen to. Never occurred to me to find your YT , really happy this fell in my recommendations.
*claps* this is amazing. Been watching your videos for a bit now and you just keep improving. Every.single.song. I love your progression and everytime I hear this stuff all I can think of is this type of arrangement NEEDS to be in a movie. It has that blockbuster feel to it. Keep killing it
Just when I was having a really really bad day at work, you give my soul something to push forward. Thank you so much. You have no idea how much I needed this. Mfw Dark Souls III is my favorite game ever. And Doom has one of my all time favorite OST's.
To be honest i didn't expect such a banger from Abyss watchers theme but you proved me so wrong and i am so freaking happy right now. This cover is now my favourite alongside "Ludwig, the Holy Blade" and "Vampire killer". Keep up the awesome work!
I truly dont know how anyone can skip striaght to the music in these. The research section of are so incredibly fascinating and fun to watch through! You have a great sense of humor and clearly know your stuff
Damn it Geoff, I have been on a Dark Souls kick lately to prep for Elden Ring. Where was this last week when I was actually fighting the Abyss watchers. Love it man!
