What is a lake in the Sierra Nevada Mountains like underwater? Scuba diving adventure.

I took an underwater sight seeing cruise in a (mostly pristine) High Sierra lake. The water is deep, cold and clean. If you ever wondered what it would look like, this is the video to see. The lake is far to big to explore in a single dive, here is a part of it.

The stillness and quietness of that lake is both beautiful & eerie. The eeriness is increased by the weird safe, the lack of fish, (except that one & few minnows), all the fallen trees (including the chunk of wood that looked liked a face) and the crazy rock that looked carved. However it is beautiful and the overall shot at the beginning reminded me of Donner Lake, which a beautiful lake itself. Great dive Mark, thanks for inviting us along.

There are quite a few fish however they were always leaving as I was arriving. High Altitude lakes often do not have the concentrations of fish that closer to sea level lakes do. On my first dives after winter in these lakes I will sometimes see many dead fish, it is my understanding this is due to low oxygen levels during winter. The mountain that runs right into one side of the lake looks like the bottom of the lake, So the rocks are reflective of the terrain that surrounds the lake, I believe this lake is glacier cut.
@iannidd
@iannidd Год назад
Oligotrophic high elevation lakes are usually like that. Very little nutrient input hence the barren bottom. In addition to that, coniferous forests create an acidic environment due to their constitution and chemistry. See all the logs and pine cones at the bottom?. Most of the exposed bedrock in the high Sierra is granite, which is slowly weathered and does not chemically balance out the pH: lacking high amounts of Ca like limestone or other sedimentary rocks.

Very cool adventure !! I enjoyed it. The sparse fish population reminded me of many years ago when I used to camp in the Adirondacks. Many of the mountain lakes were very acidic due to acid rain. We saw beautiful clear mostly small mountain lakes with no fish. Hopefully they recovered now.

Glacier water. We used to camp on McGee Creek in the 1960s. My dad would hike up to the lakes above the creek to fish. That water was FREEZING cold. That why the debris is slow to decay. Not as much bacterial action. The fish are hiding out. Brookies and rsinbow trout.

Living here at Lake Tahoe for 65 years, I have never seen the lake water so murky and lifeless. The trash and garbage is really sad to see. You can't see clearly 20 feet in front of you, at 50 feet deep. That's really, really bad. Lake Tahoe's water should be crystal clear and pristine. It's filthy, polluted, has been chemically poisoned, lacks oxygen, balanced nutrients, and has been purposely infected with several different types of invasive species, to the lake water and native fish. It truly breaks my heart and spirit to watch it get worse and worse as time moves forward. Jesus Christ himself, will be the only one able to right all wrongs done upon the earth. Humans will never be able to correct it. Humans were suppose to maintain it all properly, the way The Good Lord intended, not cut corners, ignore it all, or truly abuse it, but humans have.

yes I too remember Lake Tahoe being so clear that it was like swimming in air. My earliest memory of swimming there was in the mid 1970’s when you opened your eyes underwater it was incredible to see so far with no mask on. There are a number of reasons for the change, the invasive species Asian Clams, New Zealand Mud Snails, a few aquatic weeds and fertilizers among them. There are other naturally occurring reasons that affect the clarity on any given day as well. What can be done? We, all of us, can use this precious resource responsibly. i love the lake and the surrounding area, it is a beautiful area. A lake is not just the body of water but an entire water basin area, Lake Tahoe is blessed with a pretty clean basin of snow melt and springs. Is it perfect? No. You may be happy to know that the lake in this video is not Lake Tahoe, but another lake in the region. This lake is actually one of very few that you can safely drink from if needed, at least that was true just a few years ago, I have heard nothing that changes that. The water flow into this lake, replaces the volume of the lake about every 7 years. While it is not as clear as Tahoe, it is still clean. On several dives I have done in this lake that lasted as long as 2 hours, I have sipped and rinsed my dry mouth with no ill effects. Thank you so much for sharing your story and opinions on this wonderful region. You are blessed to enjoy it every day.

Know EXACTLY where you're at. So great to see an old friend again! Moved to the south 6 years ago and so miss drivable clear water. Do some research on the lake and you'll find what that water pipe fed, although I'm sure you liky know. Thanks for sharing.

Oh God. Now someone is going to see that rock and underwater "trail" and claim Ancient Aliens had an underwater base in that lake. And now the Men in Black will show up and make this video mysteriously vanish. 😮😮😮😮😮😂

thank you for posting. i like it that you collect/remove trash as you proceed. creeped out - possible body dump ? i wonder if your camera has a setting for on-screen depth/temp/time. well done. clear but kinda hazy, good viz tho, kinda like lake superior.

I am afraid GoPro cameras have not yet advanced to the level of Depth and temp. I will however try to remember to show my dive computer in future videos

Damm, that water must have been very cold. Apparently nobody around there plays golf. No sign of an "official" dive😊
