Oh really? What are they going to pay that military with? The New Republic was facing mass shortages because vital galactic infrastructure was blown by Operation Cinder and the First Order wasn't a thing at this point so they couldn't justify the massive costs of maintaining a large military. Also, most of the demilitarization happened AFTER Mon Mothma left office and even during her term, she only wanted to scale back the fleet. 95% of the military is ridiculously over exaggerated.

While this seems silly, we’ve seen the same thing repeated in real life over life on earth, I mean the push to claim a “peace dividend,” is strong, and those who push for it, and approve it, aren’t the ones that suffer when troops are later sent into combat without proper training and/or equipment. I’m not only talking about the US either, as just look at how much Western Europe cut back military spending, in order to claim a “peace dividend,” while counting on the USA to defend them per our NATO obligations. Hell the NATO treaty itself only called called for very moderate spending levels, but most of Western Europe didn’t even do that, at least until President Trump demanded they meet the requirements they agreed to for their own defense. And of course this was all despite major territorial changes, and borders being redrawn, following WW2, be it the formation of the Soviet Union, the creation of Israel, splitting India into India and Pakistan, and of course various other nations split in two by political factions such as Korea and Vietnam. Basically. In much of the world the moment Japan surrender, the major powers, both East and West, forgot all about them, and only cared again when it came time to expand their sphere of influence. So yes, it’s very easy to think the New Republic might undergo a massive disarmament program, despite their not having finished cleaning up the last remnants of the Empire, in fact it’s to be expected as it’s sort of seems almost a part of human nature to do so, despite the negative results that inevitably result from it.

Seriously if you to try that you'd better be able to roll a nat 20 on all diplomacy talks.

The partisanship within the New Republic started AFTER Mon Mothma retired due to illness. Up until that point, she was able to keep the government on course and unified. She de-militarized the New Republic because she wanted to avoid becoming like the Empire: a military industry.

Granted it didn't have to be as enormous as the Empire's, but severely depleting the New Republic's military was an idiotic move, considering what happened decades later with the rise of the First Order

@@fernandoharo3738 On that point I agree, the demilitarization was stupid the first time around (what lead to the clone wars) and so it was the second time. When you run a galactic government you want to be able to provide safety for your people, whether protecting them from criminals or another massive army. You most certainly cannot do that without an army! Apart from that tho, Mon Mothma was a great leader who dedicated her whole life to make the galaxy a better place. She did make mistakes, like everyone else, but she still deserves repsect for what she achieved.

Easliy Displeased a Galaxy-spanning government doesn’t just collapse because of one man dying. And especially not in a single year. Further, having Palpatine spitefully kill the empire (and people actually carry out the order) because he died is retarded. The Roman Empire didn’t collapse when an emperor died. It can certainly begin to fade when led by a series of weak rulers, but it wouldn’t happen in the course of one year. Legends it took, what? Another 8-9 years with multiple warlord factions, a primary Empire faction led by the upper echelons of the bureaucracy, etc. Not to mention Disney has pushed the idea that the Emperor wasn’t even the one who made the Empire work, so it should have been able to hold its own long after he died. Face it, Disney’s handling of the post-Endor Empire was shoddy and hamfisted.

@@MaliciousMallard You conveniently forget that in Canon too the empire splintered into many warlords which fought each other. Additionaly the Imperials thought Operation Cinder was meant to strenghten the Empire since it should instill fear again into the Galaxy. Additionaly Gallius Rax as Counselor of the Empire actively gave information to the Republic about Imperials he wanted dead, since he deamed them unworthy or dangerous to himself. Last but not least the Republic didn't even defeat the entire Empire. Great parts of the Imperial Fleet went into the Unknown Regions (for example probably the fleet we see in TROS). And after Jakku (which btw started 1 year after Endor but lasted several months) the New Republic allowed a Remnant Empire to exist in the Inner Rim with them, they were however forced to sign the Galactic Concordance, which banned Stormtroopers, torture, and put heavy reparations on the Empire. So no, in my opinion the Fall of the Empire did make sense. It could have been far better, sure, but how it is now is not horrible.

Jonas Brauer Thank you for explaining so I didn't have to. The Emperor's plan to punish the remaining imperial leaders who failed to protect him and their empire was great, not stupid by any means as it fits Palpatine's personality. He wanted them to suffer because his Empire failed to protect their leader and therefor, didn't see them fit to continue in the empire or running it for that matter. Not even that, but Palpatine also WAS the one controlling the entire Empire, not sure what he means that Disney is pushing the agenda of him not fully being in control when he was the one literally making all of the decisions behind the scenes as the Senate's vote meant practically nothing. The senate was as Palpatine said "an illusion" to pretend that they still held power and that it wasn't so obvious he was the one doing everything himself. It was messy afterwards because the remaining imperial leaders were complete bafoons, which is why it failed in the first place, and Mas Ameida was basically forced to sign a treaty with The New Republic after the Battle of Jakku.

The CIS was plagued with the same bureaucracy that affected the Republic, if not even worse. Most of corrupt organisations that were responsible for the Republic's state of affairs openly backed the CIS, due to its decentralization making it much easier to exploit. Those same droid armies that formed the back bone of the Confederate armed forces were also used to plunder planets for their resources and money, as was the case with Naboo, by organisations such as the Trade Federation and Techno Union. I imagine if the CIS did actually win the war, the Galaxy would have been in an even worse state, as these companies would have free reign to do as they please with very little consequence.

Makes one wonder if having one galaxy wide government is only possible under the rule of a dictatorship, as history shows a republic can not maintain a galaxy wide hold, best to my awareness only the Hutts and the Chiss where the only two who maintain a fully intact government from the beginning all the way to where ever legends had ended

The New Republic needed the one thing it didn't get. Time. They were a government buildt up from cinders, trying to stabilize a burning galaxy. In time, with another strong leader like Mon Mothma at their top, they would've succeeded. If not for the First Order blowing up their capital system.

The Republic, which was the base of the Empire, had a running bureaucratic system and body, all of which the New Republic had not. Sure, the Galaxy was Burning after the Clone Wars as well, but ultimately it all went according to Sideous and Plagueis plan. They had that figured out. The New Republic were former Rebels who didn't want to be opressed anymore, not some mad lad politicians.
