Hi. I've got DCT on my car. One trick is to put it in neutral if stopped for any time. It stops the clutch plates slipping and wearing and also reduces wear on the clutch release bearings. Also, carefully follow the maintenance schedule. It can change up faster that you ever can with a manual gearbox and fuel efficiency is better. Downshifts can occasionally take time to register. BobUK.

Great tips bob. I’ll pin this comment for others to see
@ShakerWalla

This isn't true. DCT gearboxes disengage the clutch when the car is stopped and brake pedal applied. What you mustn't do on DCT is let the vehicle creep whilst on the brake because this does wear the clutch.

The paddle buttons can be used anytime, in any mode. This is important to remember because a lot of reviews imply that a mode change is required before the paddle shifters can be used. The system learns your shift patterns in an eerie sense that somebody is watching you ride.

Had a DCT NC750x and now a DCT Africa Twin. The AT is better as it has more power but the NC was surprisingly good. Typically ride my AT in Sport 1 or manual mode. Gear shifts are seamless, never have to worry about stalling it and it changes gear faster than I ever could and never gets tired - gear changes are just as smooth at the beginning of the ride as at the end. Never really tried it but by all accounts dct works great off road too - the fact that you cannot stall it.

Big fan of DCT and over time it definitely improved. Had a 2010 Honda VFR 1200 DCT and wife has a 2012 Honda VFR 1200 DCT. Her bike was a definite improvement through the first three gears as there was hesitation on mine until we had the ECU reflashed. I traded in my 2010 for a 2020 Honda Africa Twin Adventure Sports ES DCT and have no qualms about its ability on the tarmac or off-road. The 4 part Richy Vida video on his journey through the Scottish Highlands will give you a good sense of the capability. If the dealer is willing to let you try the Africa Twin in the manual you should see if you can jump on the DCT version as well and use them both on the same course.

DCT is pretty good when its working, bit fidgety in stop stat traffic! But its such a complicated system it's a nightmare if it shits the bed! Very expensive to repair or replace, I wouldn't have one, but I see why some will especially on this bike, My car is a full Automatic, in modern day traffic , Manual is a pain in the butt, Butt changing gear on a motorcycle is all part of the experience for me, Nice work as ever young man 👍
@motobob

Cheers ray. I think a simple bike is a better choice as an everyday runaround. But if you’ve got the £££ to buy and run a bike like this then I can see why it’s fun for big touring miles
@gimmecom
@gimmecom 4 года назад
I can tell by the comments that folks define this as an automatic. It is DCT, like Porsche, Lambo, Corvette has paddle shifters. Paddle shifters work so much better than hand clutch + foot shift. Oh, you can also tell it to run the actuators itself if you’re in traffic. No manual transmission can clutch or shift better than DCT technology.
@alansmilealot
@alansmilealot 4 года назад
The difference in shift time isn't world changing vs the shift times in automatic vs manual 20 years ago. On the track other factors will vary the speed of a laptime but the dct does factor in.
@gimmecom
@gimmecom 4 года назад
Flat DCT is indeed a game changer. You can downshift or upshift shift mid corner without upsetting the chassis. Seamless and smooth. Much smoother than quick shifters too. Watch a quick shifter bike being run on a dyno - the chassis flexes and jumps with every gear change, violent.

Awesome review. I currently have a Harley electra glide but the new goldwings have recently gotten my attention. The older ones just didn't appeal to me because of the squared off shape of the rear but the new design makes for a very good looking bike. Is the windshield adjustable. I don't really like looking through one unless I am riding at higher speeds to block the wind and bugs.

Great video! But i still cannot get my head around the fact that the Integra (NC700D) is considered a scooter when a Goldwing is a fully fledged motorbike, even with DCT. I ride a 2012 Integra and the DCT is just awesome!
@CheapskateMotorsports
@CheapskateMotorsports 4 года назад
Being classified as a scooter is more than just the transmission type, it should be judged on chassis design alone. All scooters should be classified as underbone frames. People often call the Honda NC a scooter just because of the dct but by that logic electric bikes are scooters too and the Honda c90 scooter is a motorbike.

My first impression is that it's brilliant. It will occasionally make a gear change in mid corner, at low speeds, but the ratios are so close and the change so quick you hardly notice. Use ECON mode for puttering around in city traffic. It'll leave the box in higher gears and avoid shifting. Use the grunt, like you're driving a diesel. For crazy fun do SPORT + MANUAL. Jesus. Unbelievable.

I have the NC750DCT and I cannot rate it highly enough. I test rode a Honda VFR1200 DCT and I couldn't give it back quickly enough. DCT isn't for everyone, and it's also not for every bike. While I haven't tried it on a Goldwing I suspect it suits it perfectly. It's my guess that DCT is more suited to bikes (and riders) where out and out performance is not the primary aim.

Good explanation Motobob, I found the least refined dct that I’ve ridden was on the NC750X, clunky at low speed. My Africa twin dct was a great improvement but could catch you out with mid corner change downs, again at low speed. I also didn’t feel totally confident with the lack of clutch control on tight right hand road junction manoeuvres on the AT. I sold the bike after 11 months and bought my T120, which I love to bits but do really regret ever selling my Blackbird, my all time favourite bike. Still, as I approach my 70th birthday maybe I should be taking things easier!
@motobob
@motobob 4 года назад
Yes those downshifts do give you a fright occasionally. And I know what you mean about junction manoeuvres. Sometimes you can give it just a tiny bit too much throttle you’re keen to get a move on, and it can set off at a fair clip with a bit of a jolt. How do you rate the T120?
@joshnnik
@joshnnik 4 года назад
MOTOBOB I do rate my 2018 T120 highly and I know this may seem a little bit churlish but a little bit more top end would be nice. It’s very good two up, the wife likes the comfort but not the bikes appearance but this is what attracted me as it was so reminiscent of my first proper bike, a Triumph T90 back in 1967. However I am strongly drawn to the BMW R1250RS, so many bikes, so little time!

Roger Kent I have an DCT AT - never ride it in D mode - sometimes S1, but more and more in manual mode - full control without needing a clutch. Best parts 1) never need to roll of the accelerator to change up or down and 2) if you stop at the lights in 2,3,4,5 or even 6 it will automatically pre-select 1st so you can pull off straight away. Would probably never go back to a non dct bike.
@joshnnik
@joshnnik 4 года назад
Mark Levy Hi Mark, pleased to read your comments and pleased that you are very comfortable with your dct AT. My last nine cars have all been auto’s of one type or another and I wouldn’t want anything else but for some reason, balance maybe, I haven’t been able as yet, to gel with a bike without a clutch lever. Maybe I’ll have to give one of the big 600cc scooters a go.

I had a test ride of the NC750x DCT, it was quite impressive, if somewhat weird at first. I wasn't keen on it changing gear mid bend. Plus all that effort it took to learn clutch control would have been wasted ! ( kangarooing down the road on a 125 back just over a year ago )

If ever they put this engine in a muscle bike like the new rocket 3 i would buy it in a heartbeat. After owning an F6C (too much in the cruiser camp for me) i can safely say that when you're rolling on and off the throttle ready for the next overtake,the sound of that six cylinder engine revving it's nuts off is like nothing else. Honda obviously realise this too because they've even added a sound clip to their website. Such a shame they axed the Evo 6 concept bike.

I think, if I could afford it, I'd have a Goldwing if I lived in a country where you're not allowed to filter. But, as I live in the UK, where we can filter, I can't really see the point of owning one. One of the main reasons, I think, to have a road bike is so that you can filter and, I think, this bike would restrict that too much.

I did just that a bit over four years ago when my ST1300 got too top heavy for me. I bought a 2015 45th anniversary edition though as the new Wing wasn’t out. At 73 I have to think it was a great decision. The GW sits where I need it to and I don’t need risers to have my hands in the right place. My back is better and even though I had the fairing flare package the Wing has better rain protection. I would like to ride a newer GW and we see a lot of them here riding in East Tennessee but I only just turned 55k on this one and I never trade a bike with less than 100k. Maybe someone up on the Cheroha Skyway will trade with me for a quick trial run one day

Half the fun of road-riding is gear selection and shifting. Also, in my opinion, the clutch is one of the most important connections to the machine. I ride off-road\enduro just as much(if not more) as I do on-road and could not even conceive of not having a manual transmission\clutch there. I'm going to dig my heels in here and state; "NEVER will I EVER ride an automatic motorcycle."

@@a.d.c7941 Thanks, although I really wanted to see if there are big differences in the smoothness on a New 2020 DCT versus the 2018/19 Wing. I am wondering if the DCT auto downshifts are smoother when coming to a stop versus the prior 2018/19 DCT Wings? I noticed on the 2018 upshifts were fairly smooth ut the sownshifts look like the pilot is a rookie. I am talking about coming to a light in 7th gear and allowing the bike to slow without using the brakes. Can anyway comment on the newer DCT 2020 model versus the 2018/19? Thanks
