John put together pieces i struggled my entire life to understand. I dont think its possible to put into words the true meaning of his work. It saved me from the darkest period of my life. A place i thought the only way out of was death. Tonight i sat on my porch with an old friend and we talked so meaningfully watching the sunset and then i see this clip and all i can say is thank you john, without you i wouldn't be here to have beautiful moments like i did tonight. The craziest part is even if you just did that for me, your entire life would have immense meaning and purpose but im not the only one you have done that for. Thank you will never be enough but... Thank you.
Thank you for sharing your story! I find it so touching every time I read a story like yours, and I find that it makes the project of wisdom cultivation even more meaningful when I'm reminded that we are all in this together.
@bobby8630 watch his series "awakening from the meaning crisis" it's long and a lot of episodes take multiple watches/listens. But at the core of it suicide feels appealing when your suffering outweighs your sense of meaning. And society is very confused about what meaning is and what is meaningful and the relationship we should have with those things. I think the days of us being given meaning by the culture around us is gone. You have to build meaning in a deep and profound way for yourself, it's literally a matter of life and death. And I think John gives a great history of how and why humans have created meaning. He gives tools to help you see, find and evaluate meaning. And if you start using those you will eventually be able to create meaning for yourself in a profound way that will give your suffering a context and make it not only bearable and survivable, but as crazy as this sounds, will even make you understand why it was necessary. I was in a similar place. And I'm not going to give you some trite answer like others probably have because there is no trite solution. At the very least I can be sounding board. Sometimes you have put your thoughts and feelings into sentences not for advice or wisdom from others. But just to understand the scope of where you are truly.

I'm not yet finished with Awakening from the Meaning Crisis, and it's already had an incredible effect on my life. Everything has improved drastically, and I feel more and more at peace. Truly powerful work which I will review more and contemplate a lot about

keep God, know yourself, fulfill your given needs. It can be done on a “village level”. Most often people slip into lack of due action. They endure misery rather than endure change. But it’s an illusion. Stepping out & acclimating to a new way will bring comfort & satisfaction & more choices/bounties, minus the unbearable misery of a futile, unchanging, repetitive & accumulating unhealthy/non-optimal allowance. Action is more often required than enduring patience, which can be a lack of fortitude. Start by remembering what caused your worst pains. Then vow to eliminate, reduce, prevent, distance, forget, avoid it.👍 the day is still fresh.
I think there were perennial solutions, that accompanied our perennial problems. However, they've been hijacked and become nostalgic pieces of theater instead of being genuine connections to truth and insight. The ideals of sacrifice, service, virtue, and valor are embodied daily by a vast group of people. Nevertheless, many have abandoned the intuitions that espoused these ethics, but they themselves become a law unto themselves. They practice the beliefs of these broken systems while deregarding entirely organized religion.
Agree, but the solutions went beyond religion. I'd presume seekers and mystics throughout history would renounce religious institutions, given they're a side effect of the same problem (I.e., pray x times per day while balancing one leg and repeating sentences until face is blue). I'm not discounting the value of religion, simply saying that bhudda and Jesus existed before bhuddism and Christianity, respectively.
this is not the point at all. try to see outside of your own limited perspective. these “other words” that you are paraphrasing are not at all what john is implying but evident of your lack of understanding
