I am In a pretty unique position where I have actually come into taekwondo at 22 years old, with a lot of background in strength and conditioning, particularly competing in Olympic weightlifting since 14 and having graduated with a strength and conditioning and physiotherapy masters degree. I am really lucky to have good body awareness, understanding of recovery, importance of strengthening and positioning and much more. It’s super important to include different elements of training into your routine if you wish to be above and beyond in performance and quality of movement.
Thanks for the video Sir. I am 54 and deal with arthritis in both knees. I do some supplemental weight training which helps but I am constantly adjusting workouts to accommodate my goals. I’ll be testing for 2nd Dan in about 4 weeks so I am lessening the weight training and focusing more on TKD technique. I find your videos to be very helpful. It’s nice to have a TKD practitioner putting out such good AND entertaining content. Thank you!😊Mike PS. I should state that my arthritis is not due to TKD but rather to several years of running followed by an auto accident. TKD done with proper training has actually helped my situation.
That’s a great point. I love tkd and I practice WTF type and my focus is to get better in flexibility, mobility, stamina and sparring. So I focus on supplemental middle split workouts and I run to help my endurance. It’s true that it’s a personal journey. But weights have helped me to get stronger kicks. 💪🏾 I’m a first degree black belt and I can’t do a split. I’m an old 35 year old lady but I’d like to improve. 😊
Don't let it get you down and get well soon. Your videos are great stuff - so helpful and entertaining! By the way, the courses on your website, too! Best wishes from Germany
With regards to the Sine wave question, I myself practice ITF Taekwondo and it is very much a rise and fall motion ( when done right) ( takes quite a bit of practice) makes your punches very powerful,
That was very helpful thank you for keeping it real! I would like to get higher kicks and improve in poomsae so I think I will stick to what I’m doing right now and keep on practicing! Thanks again!
I started to do more weight and calisthenics recently, mostly for my arm strength since my arms are pretty weak. It seems to help another, I've noticed my pushup are more explosive then they used too.
Wishing you a quick recovery. Meantime you could talk about your favorite TKD appearances in media. Maybe do gear reviews or recommendations. Uniforms, protective equipment, pads, etc. Or share some “insider secrets” about running a school. Just some thoughts. I’m sure you’ll have plenty of stuff. 👍
How can I get more adults to join Taekwondo with me. Currently the only adult in my class and would like to have more adults in class with me. 3 taekwondo schools in my area and all of them have exactly 1 adult in the 14 and over class all parents of kids in taekwondo.
Not that I am a high level practitioner myself but aside from getting better at TKD, supplemental training might get you less inclined to injure yourself in TKD…
Yeah, in an ideal world everyone would work with a physical therapist to find the exercises they need to do to prevent injury. If you don’t know what to target the supplemental exercises could also injure you.
We don't use sine wave. I'm not a fan of it. It's jarring and I don't like the breathing noise. Though I learned ITF patterns, we didn't use the sine wave. Right or wrong. And who knew you were so jacked???
