Everyone comparing SRV to Jimi, or saying that Stevie doing Jimi covers makes him less of a guitarist somehow, is absolutely absurd. Doing Hendrix covers was Stevie's way of keeping Jimi's music alive, and honoring one of his major influences. Jimi was an innovator, no doubt, but Stevie single-handedly rescued Blues from damn-near extinction. In the age of hair bands, synthesizers, and parachute pants, Stevie brought Blues to the forefront, and consequently, his heroes with it....Albert King, Buddy Guy, Albert Collins, etc, etc. He brought them out of dives and into the arenas and they started selling records again. They all loved and adored Stevie for giving them props, but they loved him more for his humble nature and respect that he gave all those guys.

I love me some Stevie Ray, the man was blessed. He is one of my favorite guitarists, he plays with such emotion and becomes one with the guitar as corny as that sounds. I've read that he had extra-large fingers and hands which was why he could play so well, I just think it was his heart and soul.

When Stevie played he would enter into a different plane of existence. He had a deeply intimate relation ship with his guitar that prompted, Eric Clapton to say, “I’ve never seen a man more at one with his guitar than Stevie Ray Vaughn is”. Stevie was deeply respected by all of the blues greats.

Voodoo chile, or child was taken from an old blues tune from who's name i can't remember. But it was Jimi who took this song and sent it to a new dimension of guitar improvisation and then Stevie took it over where Jimi left off and brought it yet to another dimension. But maybe there's something cursed about this song. Arguably the two best rock guitarists ever take this tune and own it like no one can and both these rare gems get taken from us way too young. Had they both lived to an average age, no doubt they would have shared the stage like Stevie did with Clapton, BB King, Buddy Guy and others to make a double guitar version of this song that would have chopped down a mountain by their double effort edge of playing. But alas, it was not to be. Can only speculate and dream.

The way Stevie gets that sound out of the guitar is he plays VERY THICK guitar strings, most guitarists play a .9 or .10 as the high E String. Stevie's high E String is a .13 diameter. He used to sleep with his guitar and superglue his callous back on his fingertips when they fell off! He has what guitar players call hard hands.

Growing up I always heard people remebering where they were when someone died.. When Stevie died a friend and I were in a garage taking a tire off the rim and then those words came across the radio. SVR died in a helicopter crash. I was 17 and it was the first death that had impacted my life outside of a family member passing. Other musicians and artists have passed now in my lifetime but when I hear him play, it really does take me back to a more innocent and carefree time in my life and for that I will always be grateful for SRV. I had a broken ankle & had to use crutches while in great pain, it was also packed so very hard to get around. Some kind people let me & my girlfriend sit on a ledge in front of them. It was to this day the best live music performance I've seen. "Well I'm standing next to a mountain, and I chop it down with the edge of your hand" What a great lyric. Jimi Hendrix was such an underrated lyricist, he's known so much for his guitar that people forget what a great songwriter, lyricist, arranger, and producer he really was, he could do it all, so could Stevie (great performance here) who worked hard to capture Jimi's mood and feel and to keep his music alive on the lighted stage. I'm so glad both graced our earth with their talents and wish to this day they'd both been able to stay just a little longer. Stevie was a great musician, I like him, but Jimi was first. He created the songs. There was nothing else like him when he arrived on the scene. Jimi played his guitar behind his back too. Also played with his teeth. Watch his Monterey Pop Festival performance. That was at the beginning of his fame. SRV wouldn't have existed in that form without Jimi. Jimi was an innovator, musically and technically. He pushed the development distortion pedals, used a Vox pedal at a gig in Sweden in 1969 that is here on YT. Most of the songs that I can remember SRV playing were covers. Well done, but covers, like most groups did. Beatles, Rolling Stones, Led Zeppelin, and many others, all recorded covers. Even when Jimi did do a cover, he basically took it over. Look at "All Along the Watchtower". That was originally a Bob Dylan folk song. Even Dylan plays it Jimi's way now. Here's a quote from the Wikipedia article: Hendrix was inspired by American rock and roll and electric blues. He favored overdriven amplifiers with high volume and gain, and he was instrumental in popularizing the previously undesirable sounds caused by guitar amplifier feedback. He was also one of the first guitarists to make extensive use of tone-altering effects units in mainstream rock, such as fuzz tone, Octavia, wah-wah, and Uni-Vibe. He was the first musician to use stereophonic phasing effects in recordings. Holly George-Warren of Rolling Stone writes: "Hendrix pioneered the use of the instrument as an electronic sound source. Players before him had experimented with feedback and distortion, but Hendrix turned those effects and others into a controlled, fluid vocabulary every bit as personal as the blues with which he began."[3]

Most SRV fans probably already know this but when Stevie used to make faces it wasn't because he was trying to be funny or anything but because he used heavy gauge strings which makes bending strings more difficult. Stevie Ray Vaughan was the real deal who played from his heart. There's a reason why there''s a statue of him in Austin. I also have a suggestion if you haven't already checked him out there India, this is actually recommended for anyone who appreciates really good guitar playing, Danny Gatton's beer bottle slide playing on Austin City Limits, he was considered the World's greatest unknown guitarist, just found this channel recently, love your reactions. Keep up the good work pretty lady.

Jimi Hendrix has 2 songs from the Electric Ladyland album, one called "Voodoo Chile" 14:58 minutes long and the other "Voodoo Child (Slight Return)" 5:12 which is the one that you just watched Stevie Ray play. The long one has a few unique things about it. Jimi switched 2 of his lead guitar strings for bass guitar strings so it sounds like the bass player is really great in this song, but it's Jimi playing his lead. The bass player is Jack Casady from Jefferson Airplane and the keyboard player is Steve Winwood from Traffic. This is my favorite Hendrix song.

Can't put bass strings on a 6 string guitar. It would be like an elephant trying to mount a bluebird. Sorry, but that story, is quite untrue.

@@kevinbrowne9408 Thanks for your comment, I had read about that in a book way back in the 70's so maybe the story in the book was untrue or maybe I remembered it wrong. I did look it up just now though and the best I could find is that he used "The string gauges would run .010, .013, .015, .026, .032 and .038.", - .015 instead of .017 would be larger and I don't know what else is different. I wonder if these strings would make that sound he had on "Voodoo Chile" or did he play an actual bass guitar and dub it in?

SRV is the greatest person to ever play a guitar. His version of little wing blows jimi"s out of the water.

Stevie was the Only player to do something beyond with voodoo child. A rare person, Huge blues feel. Actually got on the radio and made a big difference. The voodoo imagery comes from Jimi.

SRV was burning up the Austin, TX club scene at the age of 13. He would practice guitar until the legendarily tight strings tore the callouses off his fingers. He would superglue them back on and continue practicing. This story about the callouses and glue were told by his older brother in a documentary about Stevie, his all-to-short career, and tragic death in a helicopter crash.

For pure rare unbelievable talent.. watch SRV play Texas Flood Live at the El Mocambo ..just the greatest live blues performance ever! IMO, even though there are many great guitarists out there past and present, SRV to me was the greatest all around! RIP Stevie! 30 yrs and we all still appreciate your awesome talent!

Nice! You are one of the few people I have heard comment on Tommy Shannon's bass playing. He is legendary in helping to create a Blues/Rock sound that came out of the late 1960's and developed throughout the 1970's and beyond.
