Feeling mentally unwell remains a huge taboo - that we would nevertheless be wise to try to discuss without shame. The more we can connect with others, the less in danger we will be.

Why did you do a video like this with actors? Like trying to simulate real experiences, seems disrespectful, I expect apologies.
@allanmurphy8183
@allanmurphy8183 5 лет назад
up to a point I agree with you, however sometime its easier to use actors than people like me for a number of reasons 1, fear if being recognised< I am still working and do not want people to "look down" on me 2, ease of use , actors know how to show emotion and talk in an understandable way I know sometimes I cannot express what I really mean 3, who says they are not also people affected by mental health issues Whoever acts as a spokesman for us is more than we have now
@nobbie01
@nobbie01 5 лет назад
Allan Murphy I totally agree with you. Even if I wasn't terrified about coming out and discussing my issues dealing with mental health, I still would never be able to explain myself clearly; communicating is not something I can do well, much less if I have to speak it, far less if I know I'm being recorded. It's a lot easier to take my time to write things down and let somebody else get my point across.

I used to suffer from intense, frequent panic attacks. ACT therapy helped me. Finding out more about what they were, how they worked and how common they were helped a ton. Becoming aware of my thoughts before and during panic attacks and accepting it as part of my life actually reduced my panic attacks. I haven’t had a panic attack in about 6 months. And the ones I had leading up to their cessation were manageable. Which is much better than the years of frequent dread and ambulances I went through. Anyway, there’s hope guys.

Hello, nice to meet y'all, I have Gender Dysphoria and to a lesser degree Depression and Anxiety. Gender Dysphoria is tough to express to other people because it's usually hard for them to make a link between how you want to become the opposite gender and how your inner self is and has always been that gender. Put differently, others aren't able to look into your mind to see that you are a different gender than you are showing on the outside.

I conquered my CPTSD after 15 years of constant fighting. I am free from my demon. To all those who are suffering from the demon, keep fighting. Don't give up. You can win! Use your anger, and channel it into strength.
@razredge07
@razredge07 5 лет назад
May not be the best coping strategy, but I've used my rage to give me the strength I need to drag myself from depressive and suicidal states. The idea of it all ending so feebly just seems so unfair and a bitter insult to all of my effort to overcome the tragedies, injustices, and brutal recoveries. Seems ridiculous to rely on so trivial an emotion as anger, but it's helped. So much has been taken from me, and yet I have enough dignity to feel indignant.

@@GeraltOfRivia99 Constantly searching for a way out, from any source that I could find. Anything from medicine, to prayer, to tai chi and qi gong. I learned of a combination of hate, rage, pain, and a certain technique that was taught to me by an old Vietnam veteran. It's like imagery fighting, but much more complex. The first step is to create a world inside of your mind that reflects the hell that you deal with every day. Now, you need to manifest the CPTSD as an evil entity of your own making. Give it form. Then you will see your enemy. The rest is up to your imagination. You must go into your mind and fight this demon as often as possible. Manifest allies to aid you. I chose to give form to each of my personality traits. Rage, darkness, purity, pain, void, love, and even my father who died when I was 11, whom I called sentinel... He was the first. Panic attacks are when this technique truly shines. I myself would fall into my battlefield. Beaten and broken by the demon, I fled as far as I could while my champions would cover my escape. You need to abandon everything that would prevent you from doing this, and accept it without any doubt, or judgement, or this will never work for you. If you want peace, then open your mind, do whatever it takes to attain this peace, and I promise that you will see results... Only if you believe.

It's especially difficult to think "You're not alone" when you consider that even those going through something similar are "forced" into silence just as much as yourself. It ends up being that I know I'm not alone in any literal sense, but I nonetheless feel alone in a more subjective, everyday-experience kind of way. This is why I think that videos like these are essential because they don't just promote engaging in more open and respectful conversations about these topics, but they can serve to alleviate the pains of those who _feel_ they're alone even if they know they "literally" aren't.

One thing I've learned is that you can be stronger in some areas and weaker in others. If you have a mental illness, you're likely really weak in a few areas, but that doesn't mean you can't be strong in others! For example, I'm on the Avoidant Personality Disorder spectrum. Anything social is extremely difficult for me. However, a couple siblings are working out issues from when they were kids and are lashing out against our parents. But for me, I've already forgiven them a long time ago and moved on. I'm strong in that area.

Thank you for creating this video. The stigma around having a mental illness can sometimes be just as harmful as the illness itself because it creates this sense of shame for a) being sick in the first place and b) needing help, in whatever form that might be. Being able to talk honestly and openly to someone, anyone, without fear of judgement is a necessary step in the road to recovery and becoming mentally healthy.

I suffer from a mental disorder too. I always wanted to be a writer but the illness made everything so much harder. I read a lot of books, the classics, etc, yet still when I went to writing a book, the material came out flat. Then I found the solution to this problem. It wasn't so much reading so many books that improved my literary skills over time, it was the challenges and rewards of learning a new and very different language, Russian Cyrilics, that abled me to surpass previous difficulties in finding a good style for my books. After about 4 years of learning the Russian language I noticed great improvement in my literary skills and the words came out onto the page with more brevity and wit. Learn a new language to improve your mental health!

This year marks a quarter of a century since I was diagnosed with Bipolar and Anxiety Disorders. What the gentlemen did in this video is praiseworthy. Help is here, but you have to ask for it. The right medications are here, but you have to speak up when what you're taking isn't helping. A good life is here, but you have to remember that what is hurting you is a disease and nothing else. Fight the disease and not yourself. Stay strong everyone. You got this.

I too suffer from mental illness and as one of the guys says "look normal" because I AM normal. Any illness is not who you are it's what you have got, to say someone is dyslexic, left handed, bald or fat (i am all of those) is just a quick description of a single issue they have, but to say someone is mentally ill seems to be the "whole package". Well I can tell you this package has done many, many different things in his life which most "normals" would not have a clue how to even start. ill yes but like everyone else I am much, much more.
@sonicfan2004
@sonicfan2004 5 лет назад
Formerly, human souls are like reflecting water. People often speak or act opposite of their true feelings. However in today's world, people may desire peace, and yet on the other hand, crave conflict as well. This is why "normies" nowadays seem to have become so self-centered that they use any opportunity to stand out in front of their peers by making fun of the exceptional individuals around them. And thus, preserving peace amongst their peers by creating conflict with an exceptional individual, for peace shan't exist without conflict.
@sonicfan2004
@sonicfan2004 5 лет назад
It is so heartwarming though to see that there are people like you who don't let themselves be stopped from reaching their goals by disgraceful acts as such, for it is indeed usually the gifted ones that will make it further than what an "ordinary" being could ever achieve. :) Speaking of which, how was your adolescent time like before you came this far? I suppose looking back on it I was different to most however a mixture of pig headedness and youth ignorance I made it. Also I only found out I was dyslexic after I left school (the school did not give a dam about the kids after all there was 3,500 of us in one school) so I decided not to hide but to take it head on and not hide it. I think that helped me a lot.

I also had bad social anxiety..At 17 I became the shift manager for Mc Donald’s... and one day someone decides to rob us at gun point As soon as I seen the gun I ran and was able to get my employees out the store” all I could here is stop” He broke the drive through window” witch Startled me” I couldn’t sleep for 3 years. At 36years old Me and my girlfriend was walking when 5 guys jumped out the car and started shooting at us, my girlfriend gets shot in the ass and the other guy tries to blow my head off” the bullet wised by my head and missed” then they jump in the car and take off” I was carrying my girlfriend to safety and she got lucky....the bullet missed a major Artery. Needless to say I suffered from many mental disorders....at 40years old I’m diagnosed with Gastroparesis” there’s no cure and it’s debilitating....I ended up with having bad nightmares, high anxiety with self harm, PSTD....can’t hold or keep a job” can’t be around people and I don’t like to make eye contact” for some reason it triggers a violent episode. Having ASD and being socially isolated with depression is one of the most silent killers. As a sufferer and cultural worker, I want to let you know if you share the struggle, that no matter who you are, you need to talk to others about it, even if it is hard for them to empathize. I cried as I was watching this. I also don't understand why do we need to hide the truth about what we're going through. Mental illness would be 10x easier if people just helped those in the storm to express their inner truth. This is energy, voice and feelings that are stuck and choked. I'm in this phase in my life where I don't know much like I used to. And I feel tired. Love and compassion need to be spread again.

Thank you for doing a video with male participants that is based around the discussion of mental illness. As a sufferer of mental illness, I have always felt much sympathy for men who also suffer from this type of ailment, as they also have to contend with a societal stigma that is attached to the topic of men and mental illness. As a female, I have noticed quite often how rarely men are encouraged to come forward and openly discuss their own experiences with depression, anxiety, bipolar disorder, OCD and other mental health conditions due to a concern that they will be made to feel weak and even ashamed for expressing emotional vulnerability (which is a symptom of being human). Mental illness does not discriminate between genders and I applaud any form of media that identifies that men can just as easily be victims of mental illness as females and thus, encourages an accepting and healthy dialogue around this universal topic.

If someone like me is about to start their process to recovery or thinking about it I wish you the best. I wish you could find the help you need, the resources and therapist right for you, I hope it's all available for you. I know it's not always that way. Just letting know that are more people like you who wish you the best.

So well done and honest thank you, I just can't get a bloky friend to confide so I struggle on. It's isolating and I'm worried this could bubble up in public or work etc so I just continue day by day. Best I can but in continual inner turmoil and pain.

I never trusted how I feel. I started to see a therapist 3 years ago, now I stopped because I can't afford to pay it. But with this experience of 3 years I am gaining confidence to believe what I feel and I can see that I am very scared very often, I don't trust people. The therapist told me many times that I suffer from PTSD because of emotional neglect and humillation.

It is the taboo and misunderstanding of mental health illness that needs addressing. Educating people on mental health is the way forward I am only now admitting my illness after thirty years of pain

Why cast what are obviously actors reciting a script? This could have been much more meaningful if it had been presented more organically.

Men talking about their feelings is so weird to you that it has to be scripted? #ToxicMasculinity. They may seem uncomfortable because maybe for some of them this may be their first time publicly coming out to talk about it.

@Dr. Dan Bigs most people cannot understand. They cannot. We owe it to ourselves to manage our problem. This is how the world is. Take care , bro.

@Dr. Dan Bigs yes bro, it is among your brethren like this that you will find enough compassion and understanding. And let me tell you, all mental illnesses can be managed and life still enjoyed. I have OCD. Initially it wrecked me, but now that I know a lot about it due to my own personal findings and shared experiences of successful sufferers, I am very much better. Maybe even 90% well now. So you can and you will be better. Make sure you understand it so you can manage it. When you understand it, the battle is won

I think we need to realize that everyone is human and we all are going through things like this. We are often too scared to open up to people because we think they will laugh, or be mean to us, etc. But in reality, 99% of the time, if you approach someone they will be there to help.

jim holroyd Well, but if we all strongly suspect that they're acting that means they aren't doing a very good job. So it made no sense to hire not-good actors with mental illness when there are plenty of non-actors with mental illness out there who would be much more convincing and relatable, because they wouldn't be "working," they'd be talking about their lives with no other angle or filter at play.
@gavinhudson5251

@@camez2345 So are they actors with mental illness, non-actors with mental illness, actors with no mental illness or non-actors with no mental illness, that is the question!!!?

Not all illness can be seen on the outside. Mental health is a real issue that a lot of people goes through alone. We need to show and spread more awareness of it, and make the sufferer feel they aren’t alone in it, that help is there.

I thought I was the only one who thought it came out of nowhere. People would say it's because of this and that, but honestly for the person suffering from this illness, it really feels like it came out of nowhere. One day you are okay after a minute you are grasping for air.

My boyfriend always undermined my anxiety until one day he wound up in the hospital with chest pains. He thought he was having a heart attack. It turns out it was an anxiety attack. He was blown away at how much your mind can affect your body. And I was so sad that he was now going through what I have been for years. I wouldn't wish it on anyone.

My ex-husband has bipolar schizophrenia. She was retired because she couldn't get back to work. That was 22 years ago. Now her ex-husband is trying to start a new business for the welfare of the disabled. She is a business related to independence training. She thinks she needs to know the current situation in Japan and other countries. That was the reason I arrived at this video. Thank you very much.
