Today i go into depth in a video essay analysis of the houseplant term 'rare plant' and how it has changed from its intended meaning to a brand new meaning.

Thanks Ashley for making these videos that you spend is much time researching. I love that you don’t do the same videos everyone else does.

I don’t necessarily agree with everything you shared but I love that you opened up this conversation. There are some interesting dynamics in the plant world : financial, social, emotional etc. I’m in recovery- I lived in addiction for much of my life and this is truly my new addiction. And I have found a HUGE recovery community within the plant community and it’s been amazing.

I really enjoy videos like this where you take an almost sociological approach to the plant community, definitely more of those! What I also find interesting in this context is the difference between the "natural" and the "artificial" when it comes to the perceived value of a plant. For example: you will sometimes see the argument that plants from TC aren't "the real thing" (apart from supposedly being weaker/worse quality than ones grown from cuttings or seeds, which is a whole discussion in and on itself) or that hybrids are somehow lesser than their parent specimen due to them not occurring naturally/being less "pure". However, this perception also strongly depends on which part of the plant community you are in: in the orchid world, hybrids and plants grown from tissue culture (meristem cloning) are very much the norm. In fact, I'd even argue that many collectors prefer buying plants grown from TC rather than seed (produced by selfing or sibbing the plant) because the chances are higher that the flowers will look exactly how they do on the mother plant - which is the desirable trait here. There's definitely more to say about the inner workings of the orchid community but yeah :) If you ever feel like it, I'd be super interested in a video about the lifestyle created around "being in the plant community" or something like that!

What you said in this video makes sense and as you know can be applied to many things besides houseplants. Obtaining things that are "rare" for fame or so others can't have them is a basic tennent of humankind and has led us to where we are in the world today!

exactly - get into the cacti, succulent and especially the caudiciform communities and you will find truer "rare" plants because they take so long to grow, require super special conditions, or are a one of a kind bonsai-like form. Poaching is much more rampant because of this too, unfortunately.
