Not long after the New Year began, another West African country announced yet a new attempted coup. The government of Burkina Faso said last week that it had averted a plot by armed forces to take over the country.
Last year there were military takeovers in Mali and Guinea. The country of Chad, which is also in the restive Sahel zone, saw a non-democratic transition of power.

It’s always fun seeing “western” media asking this type of questions. Everyone knows W Africa is French “playground” to put it mildly. French colonialism is still good and well. All “western” so cooed democratic powers don’t care that France is still exploiting the region, economically and politically. For god sake, all W African gold reserves are still in Paris, and French do everything to stop W Africa economic and monetary union. At the end you see some ignorant ppl saying in comments how nations of W Africa don’t have democratic tradition. Of course they don’t because of France sucking their blood. Real freedom for W Africa.
@cageybee7221

most african countries have unfortunately had bad experiences with democracy. these so-called democracies ended up falling pray to wealthy foreign investors, who propped up their own loyalist candidates to set up brutal, but 'democratic' regimes that served their industry. any attempts to subsequently vote this tyrant out, are met with foreign mercenaries.

@ivannapolsk9421
@ivannapolsk9421 2 года назад
They probably hate being forced to use the French controlled colonial legacy currency: the Franc. iirc it was one stipulation for being "freed" from French colonial rule. But really it just allows France to have a lot of monetary influence in former French West African Colonies like Mali. It's no surprise that once the economy starts deteriorating, they would wish to overthrow the french-backed "democracy" in Mali. It's pretty typical in less developed, less powerful democratic countries to have a lot of rich foreign western countries trying to push their candidates into the leadership. I suppose that's why many coups in africa are military backed with democratic promises after "stabilizing" the country.

None of those countries are forced to be in that currency group, several have even decided to leave it over the years. Its a benefit for those countries to be in it because it ensures their currencies remain stable and dont randomly crash. But sure, always someone else to blame.
@ivannapolsk9421
@ivannapolsk9421 2 года назад
@@FarsightAE France has been meddling in African politics for years. You're basically blaming African countries for being scammed, manipulated, and exploited by France. That French controlled currency siphons capital out of Africa and removes their ability to make their own monetary policy. It's also was not so simple to just walk away when France starts meddling in African elections, media, economy, and leaders to keep them within the french sphere of influence. It's a given that it's not all France's fault, but it's undeniable that they still bear a significant factor of responsibility given the amount of neo-colonial influence they project within the region. Just like how France wants to go less than half way across the globe into another continent to meddle in African affairs when a coup happens. Good or bad France makes it their business to meddle in African affairs, so again yes, France definitely shares blame even in modern times without even accounting their past colonial rule. It's not like Francs is in African politics out of the goodness of their heart.

@@farzana6676 Eh, it's not like the attempted coup on Jan 6th of last year in the states. Regardless, the right to self-determination of African peoples is far more important than living in this alleged utopia under remnants of French rule.

Precisely, election is not be-it-all for democracy, you still need to govern in a manner that the people enjoy dividend of electing 'their own '.
@tjmarx
@tjmarx 2 года назад
O.o Under democracy if you elect bad government, the people can protest & petition, depending on the system they might have the option to force a new election, but when all else fails and you have bad governance terms end and you vote for someone else. That's how democracy works. This has literally nothing to do with why there a coup d'etats in West Africa.
@LLAALALA
@LLAALALA 2 года назад
@@tjmarx 'you vote for someone else'. that is the exact problem here, there can be only so many times people 'vote for someone else' and ended up with the same or even worse government before people have enough with democracy the system completely breaks. When you have more than two groups of people with different interests, AKA all of the African nations, the majority of the people will always be dissatisfied with the election result. The problem is African nations build on borders that make no sense at all. So it is guaranteed that for the majority of the people the elected government is a 'bad government' regardless of who is in power.
@musafawundu6718
@musafawundu6718 2 года назад
@@tjmarx Just voting for someone else will not mean that that someone else and the government that he leads will be much better than the previous one. Changing government after government without actually establishing and implementing a long term governing policy, irrespective of the government in power, will not bring about development. Multiparty adversarial democracy does not give an incentive towards cooperative and consultative pluralism that a country needs, especially a developing one which aims or which its elites proclaim they want to industrialize. What it does is actually have various parties and their representatives compete for votes with various promises that are nebulous in terms of the way that they are going to be achieved, and it also results in spoils sharing of state resources and negative rent seeking by supporters and businesses in return for their support in helping one get elected. A military government, by contrast, if its leaders are actually interested in doing so, can make very swift to immediate decisions with regards to development and investments and direct resources there accordingly, without needing to respond to inimical special interest groups and persons, since they did not reply on them to come to power.
@tjmarx
@tjmarx 2 года назад
Neither of you appear to understand how voting actually works. I hear nonsense excuses and one of you is a ridiculous apologist for military dictatorships. Voting doesn't happen in a vacuum, it's not the case that just because you vote for some other guy that, that person is definitely going to win. Nor does an incumbent losing mean they cease to exist or remain untouched in their platform. Politicians don't want to lose their jobs, so when they do those who want to remain in politics take the feedback from the electorate and adjust their policies. Similarly, votes can be spread across candidates creating a situation where there is no winner an the election has to be held again. That kind of feedback from the electorate tells politicians they need to change their platform in order to split the divide. Where another candidate receives enough support to take the election, they have an appealing platform. You have to hope they meant it and punish lying politicians at the polls so it stops happening. This has nothing to do with borders, everyone whose candidate doesn't win an election feels dissatisfied with the results and a bit miffed. That's normal regardless of where you're from, it's part of democracy. Most democratic countries have tens if not hundreds of competing interest groups. Every democratic country has warring factions. Africa is no different. It takes time for a society to build a political class, and democracies need strong constitutional protections, including separation of militaries from political life. A constitution, social structure and political education that means when people's candidates lose a fair election they take the loss with dignity. That's the problem in many African countries, not where borders are drawn.
@LLAALALA
@LLAALALA 2 года назад
@@tjmarx It appears that you don't know what a border is. You said the problem in Africa is "It takes time for a society to build a political class, and democracies need strong constitutional protections" essentially you are saying because people have different political views and constitutional needs that there are problems in Africa, which is true. That is basically saying people of different viewpoints in a single country are causing problems in Africa. Borders if drawn correctly are supposed to include people of similar political and democratic viewpoints into a single nation. AKA South American. You're essentially saying the solution to the border problem in Africa is that have people of different viewpoints assimilate into a single nation through time. Which is a fair point. But that does show your solution is based on a problem created by people who should not be in a single border got be lumped together.

Where did you dig this guy up from DW? My gosh. The reason you have military coup d'etats in west Africa is very simple. Militaries in this region are allowed into political life. So when they disagree with the government, they start thinking about the power they have with their guns and imagining how they could do a better job. This has nothing to do with democracy or failure of government ffs. Yes the specifics of what leads to the coup d'etat differs by country but the driving force behind all of them is allowing the military to be it's own organisation and involved in political life When you get bad governance under democracy you protest, you petition, and you elect someone else when the term ends. You don't push for a coup d'etat. In successful democracies, coups don't occur because militaries aren't part of political life or allowed to have a political opinion. They are politically agnostic organisations that serve and are commanded by whoever makes up government in that moment. The source of the problems in west, east and north Africa are poorly written constitutions and sometimes societies that aren't quite ready for democracy yet.

3:30 "The main issue is the way the countries are governed" correct. In other words, Culture. It takes 500yrs to produce a stable democracy (some European countries still haven't achieved it). You may ask, "What about the USA ?" Well, the first settlers established councils and schools (every settlement of 50 people had to have a teacher), that was inherited from Europe : the USA is simply a bifurcation of Northern Europe.
@vinm300

South and Central America are a bifurcation from Spain/Portugal. Spain is a country which is yet to become a stable democracy. Only in 1975 did Spain reluctantly abandon fascism.

Parliamentary democracy is the system where I live. We take care of our elderly and the disabled have good support. There is corruption in all systems but with laws against this behavior they get rooted out. Most western democracies have lost their mind with this virus, but that should end shortly and they can hopefully get back to normal. I don't know what you'd like to see in it's place but as things stand from where I live it still functions better than all alternatives.

How ironic is it that the milatary people doing the coups are all secularists who want to implement democracy. What Islam has to do with coups, coups being happening in Africa for decades; read the history of the region.

If the Europeans had educated the people of Africa before they left that continent wouldn't be a hodgepodge of conflict, instability and rampant tribalism.

" left that continent" They are still there, they control the governments, if they don't they overthrow them. It is in Europe's and the USA's best interest to keep the people of African nations poor, this is what they do.
@clockpenalty
@clockpenalty 2 года назад
And why should they educate them? To create superstates which would outcompete them within 50 years? Clearly they acted in their own best interests and continue to do so. Africa's development will be stunted until it is no longer in the interests of other nations to do so, and there is no guarantee that day will ever come. So it's up to the people of Africa to take action themselves to acquire the skills they need to survive. A lot of them are waking up to this after they got abandoned during the pandemic.
