I put one of these in with a marine battery also, I built a box with a tin roof for the battery. It was for my elderly neighbor, she had four remotes so I set the code dip switches. She made me a big pot of fried okra and a big pan of bread pudding, fair trade!

One word of advise that I got from a friend that was a metal worker for years. When drilling in metal, go slow (turn the drill slowly) and push fairly hard like you were. A slow rotation does 2 things. It gives the drill bit time to get a deeper bite and it reduces the heat that builds up. Also as noted below, it is good to use a pilot bit and oil if you can. All in all, you got it done, that's all that matters. ;-}}

you might look into a set of left-handed drill bits for removing broken bolts
@williamwoodland1587
@williamwoodland1587 5 лет назад
When drilling it is always a good idea to start with a small pilot drill, 1/16 to 3/16. This will make it a lot easier to push 5/16 and larger drills through metal. This works well on drill press also. When removing a broken bolt or stud drill all the way through or in deep. Start with a small drill and work your way up till you get the easy out to fit and grab. Always use a lubricant when drilling and then brake cleaner to dry and remove oil film to paint. This will keep your drill bits in good shape and make them last longer and you won’t have to work as hard. They sell piloted drills but it is easy to break the pilots off. If you are going to drill lots of holes have a ¼ inch drill motor for pilot and a 3/8 or ½ drill motor for the larger drill size.

Change to an Apollo gate opener. I installed one and love it. It has a few safety features as well. For example if it detects it hit something it will stop and auto open. Which will reduce damage to gate or truck. The safety feature is also adjustable. I used pipe clamps so I wouldn't have to drill into the gate. I welded the metal support to the clamp. I also used a locking trailer hitch pin. Works good looks fine.

Josh, I was surprised how much the original gate had crumpled and how massive the localised damage was at the point of contact with the seed drill. Then when you were hanging the new one I noticed the crimping in the corner top bends on that. It seems that the tube in the gate is very thin, probably thinner than exhaust pipe tubing. Here in Oz, our lighter duty gates are based on 1in ID water pipe, which at least can be bent for the corners without crimping, though they will buckle if you hit them with a vehicle. Still an interesting show. Hope you have that marine battery in a very well insulated box during winter, all lead acid derived batteries absolutely hate near freezing and below temperatures.

Oh man, that’s an expensive lesson. Glad to see you used a wrench on the screw extractor. They are not intended to be used in a drill motor. Did you know you can get reverse twist drills? That way you’re not tightening the screw when you drill the hole. Sometimes they actually grab the screw and will back it out without even having use the extractor. Good extractor kits come with reverse drills. Also, you’re pushing the bit too hard, that’s why you see smoke. Let the bit do the cutting. Love your vids!

I agree. I normally get 10-12 years out of each one. As long as you never use the tiny battery that comes with it and get a good solar panel(not from GTO). The small-ish MM home office/warehouse is about an hour north of me. Great product, great prices and even though their tech staff know their stuff inside and out they can be...uh..lets just say they are not the friendliest folks around(this could be due to all the 'low voltage' issues that come up and owners that don't know what low voltage is lol. and good luck if you ever think you're going talk them into replacing a component under warranty...which I'd be fine with if their replacement parts weren't so expensive. Just about everything other than a rev counter is more than half the price of a whole new kit. They do have refurb 'specials' brand new control board is $245 but you can get a refurb for the rock bottom low price of $225.00.

Man you GOT to build a log cabin on that hill...... Oh and by the way you are not the first "gate crasher" I have taken out a few myself. I even once took out 14 mailboxes in front of an apartment complex when someone stopped in front of me. I was driving a log truck at the time with a load of logs on. It was either hit the car or take out the mailboxes. I opted for the latter...... Good repair.

Get you some left hand drill bits. It's not a joke they make drill bits that drill turning reverse in the drill. They drill going to the left; hence the name left handed drill bits. 80% of the time the broke bolt will come out with the bit. Amazon has em'. Good job on the gate (crushing and hanging). I always said if ya goin' do something do it right. That old gate is scrap metal.

Good video as always, I have had the mighty mule 350 on my driveway gate for the past 3 years. Had some issues with the solar keeping my battery charged when I put mine in so ended up upgrading to a 20w panel when that still didn't fix my problem i found the charge controller not doing it's job so I bought my own charge controller and wired it straight to the battery. Haven't had any trouble out of it since. Hopefully they worked a few bugs out with the new 360 model.

@bransonred1

I was going to add almost the exact same comment. Charge controller and solar panel from Harbor Freight (the panel with the clear glass) - they are very good panels. I paid $59 for the panel the original owner had installed one of the GTO (way over priced at $210.00 and crappy) solar panels and it lasted two years in the florida sun before the clear cover became so milky and chalky to the touch - it looked like white plastic. Deep cycle battery is really a total waste of money unless you have very minimum sunlight. Even then you will never run a battery all the way down with a MM opener - after about 11-11.5 volts the opener will not work or will have a mind of its own. DO NOT use those little UPS batteries that used to come with all their openers or you'll be in for nothing but headaches. 35 AH (big lawn mower size) battery is all the battery you'll need with a good panel.
@toms1499
@toms1499 6 лет назад
Smith Farms about same I found only I used a battery from a dead Honda civic, I bought my solar panel from rural king, and ordered my charge controller from eBay for around $12 I believe lol. My mighty mule onboard charge controller was junk from day 1, Battery had plenty of juice but kept beeping like it was dead however rest of the board seemed to work fine so I just decided to bypass it and pull the beeper off the board. With my charging modifications I have not had to touch the opener at all for 3 years with atleast 3-4 openings per day. Mighty mule seemed to have a lot of issues with charging from what I read online, such a shame they couldent put a little more into them to perfect their product. Hopefully they fixed that with the new arm mr. Stoney ridge farmer picked up, hopefully he will update us to let everyone know how it's doing.

I wrecked a gate the same way lol Though you win when it comes to total destruction. I caught mine on the tail light protector on my equipment trailer...just took the gate with me along with half of the opener. Other than i huge notch shaped like the tail light protector and the gate now being shaped like a parallelogram, it was relatively straight...but hey, the light protector didn't budge.

Just a battery tip. It does do damage to a deep cycle battery just not much. No one really can say but it does shorten battery life. Any deep cycle should not be discharged below 50% charge to maximize battery life. The closer that battery remains to 100% charge voltage the longer it will last. I'm am an electric golf cart guy and these are tips we go by to maximize our expensive battery pack.

@natevanlandingham1945
@natevanlandingham1945 6 лет назад
Stoney Ridge Farmer Yep it was news to me when I first learned it. I thought you could constantly discharge them and they were designed to be done that way. Not really just that they recover better than an out 12v battery. Totally discharging one a few times (deep cycle ) will shorten the life but probably not noticeable, a week or month, who knows but it does not help the life thays for sure. If you do it every time you use one, your probably taking a few years off its use able life.
