Turns out Cybertruck Is A Cyber-Dud?

Trucked Up EVs

Serious revelations have surfaced regarding the most anticipated EV truck in history.
The Tesla Cybertruck has had a rough beginning, but is there a silver lining? What if the true capabilities of the cybertruck are yet to come, and the current electric truck is more a first adopter ev production ramp-up exercise to get the most controversial ev truck in history to exceed the promises first made in 2019?

This was the truck I dreamed of owning from the moment rumours transformed into a confirmation that Tesla was making an EV truck. I was all in, and purchased my pre-order within minutes of the order banks being opened up. Now, over 4 years later, I'm rather glad that I didn't follow through - not that I could have, even if I had wanted to, with one's place in the order line mattered little in Canada, being Tesla decided not to ship here until 2025. What are your thoughts on what's up with Cybertruck? Do you think more pluses are on the way, and this is just the reality of any ramp-up, or do you think things are not all a bed of roses over at Tesla HQ?

Here's the thing about range and charging speed: They don't really mean anything in real world operation. They gain meaning only after efficiency is factored in. I'm not trying to gloss over all the issues that have been noted, but for most drivers, if they go on a long trip, what matters is how long it takes and how convenient it is. On these two points, the Cybertruck, like all Teslas, is doing well above average. On the Out of Spec Coast to Coast EV truck test, the CT finished about 20 minutes behind the Silverado EV which has a bigger battery (although it was the "small" battery version of the Silverado, it still has a bigger battery). It finished ahead of the Rivian, even though the Rivian has been in production for over two years and has had many updates to optimize its performance. And, last but not least, it finished five hours ahead of the Lightning. And shortly after the race, a new update was announced that is supposed to increase charging speed by 20%. If that happens, the CT will have a serious advantage over all other EV trucks in road trip times. With the possible exception of the biggest battery Silverado/Sierra - but these will be gulping down far more juice and costing much more to charge at those highway chargers. So, while there's plenty of room for criticism, it's not all bad. Tesla's mastery of the "EV" part and their dominance in that field still do shine through. The world owes Mr. Baglino much gratitude for his services. Let's hope another company will see fit to draw upon his insights.

@@thelegendaryfk7922 First, second and third were all pretty close together. If they ran the race again in the other direction, it's anybody's guess which order the CT and Rivian and Silverado would come in. As far as I'm concerned, that puts the Cybertruck in pretty good company. It has a smaller battery than the Silverado. And it has not had two years of software optimization like the Rivian. It also did not have CCS charger access like the Rivian did. The wet rag is a fair point, but then again, if someone was in a hurry, it would be very simple to do. People have done FAR crazier and more extreme things to ICE vehicles over the years to get them to go faster or to be more reliable, and still do.

This isn't a dig at Tesla owners. Tesla has an incredibly loyal fan base that would literally pay extra for Elon Musk excrement in the glove box. This type of devoted Fandom to a company/ person will be studied in business classes for the next hundred years. The fact Tesla treats people as individual piggy banks that they smash on the ground and run to the next as they leave them with sub par products will only deplete the loyal fan base and Tesla (a growth company) will shrink and it will be a blood bath in Texas and the other plants.
@truckedupevs

I'm always surprised, actually, by brand/leader loyalty/worship. I own a Lightning but don't offer feilty to Ford or its CEO, Jim Farley. I have a pre-order in for the Silverado EV but don't preach about the magical brilliance of GM or CEO Mary Barra. I think you are so correct that this phenomenon will be studied because it speaks of society as a whole and how we as humans feel a need to be a part of a special group or tribe, sometimes to our detriment. Great food for thought. Thanks for the comment!

@@truckedupevs I too have a Silverado EV Pre -order and had no idea who or what Mary Barra was back in 2022 when I signed up. I however have become aware of who and what she is as the UAW strike progressed last year and the Ultuim battery module production ramp up issues hit the news over this past year. I have since bought the 2024 Lyriq and I am happy with the purchase, it's fun to drive and made sense over the ICE XT5 equivalent. My take on vehicle purchases is based upon sound business sense that trumps (pun intended) brand/leader loyalty/worship every time every day. Who knows if I will go through with the purchase when the Silverado EV Pre -order turns into a purchase opportunity. Only time will tell (sometime in the 2025 MY). .

Bruh, if you up the battery pack to a 200kwh battery pack, the truck will weigh a lot more, cost at least $20k more, will be a lot less efficient moving all that extra weight around, will need much thicker more expensive tires at higher pressures, will be a lot more pricey to insure, will have slightly higher center of gravity, causing more body roll and less traction on turns as well as worse acceleration and braking, etc.
@truckedupevs
@truckedupevs 2 месяца назад
Um, 'bruh' The CT Foundation tri-motor is already more money than the Silverado EV and Hummer, which both have over 200kwh packs, and the specs on the Silverado EV WT4 already in production for fleets is just as efficient kw/mile as the CT. If you know about design, the battery tray is low to the ground and regardless of housing 123 or 200 kwhs worth of batteries wouldn't change the centre of gravity, and would actually be more structurally rigid if filled properly. So yeah, no. Also, the tire rating from what is on the truck now to what its competitors require would not go up. It is already rated for up to that load based on GVWR. Currently, it's an unfinished, rushed-to-market cash grab for Tesla. Wait a year and buy twice as much CT for 40% less price.
@ItsBinhRepaired
@ItsBinhRepaired 2 месяца назад
@truckedupevs The cybertruck battery weighs nearly 1600lbs, so imagine adding that to the weight of the already nearly 7k lb truck. Put 1600lbs payload in the truck and see how much efficiency you'll lose... it'll also wear the tires down faster and be harder on the suspension and other components... imagine offroading that now nearly 9k lb truck... You can't just ignore physics. Imagine pulling that up more slick surfaces... You have to think about everything that added battery affects... for the average buyer, that added battery will add extra cost and reduce other performance factors. Imagine accelerating that extra 1600lbs...

Hi Zach. Thank you for this well-thought-through comment and critique. It is important to not automatically trust everything we see and hear, especially on RU-vid 🙂. Here are some further indicators that what I reported in this video was actually accurate - and not 'lies' at all: 1) There is a point in the tear-down when one of the engineers refers to the space between the battery 'flat' and the upper casing being empty, meaning a second layer should be there. The comment trail is not referring to the outer crash spacing, but the height spacing. Here is an article with links: electrek.co/2024/04/09/tesla-cybertruck-teardown-battery-pack-is-half-empty-confused/ . The important thing to note is that Tesla's chief engineer actually responded, confirming that the originally planned double-stack casing was only single stack, but likened it to 'half full' rather than half empty. Here's the link to Wes's reply to Whole Mars Catalog on X: twitter.com/wmorrill3/status/1777709953723293919 . (Please note that Whole Mars Catalog is a serious Tesla fan) 2) There are over 60 separate reports and/or complaints on a fleet of just under 3,900 CT vehicles produced to date (that's a pretty high %), of rust appearing on the surface of Cybertruck, and numerous accounts and videos from credible sources, enough to have Tesla respond directly (with no PR department FFS!). Here is just one of a plethora of links and articles to that response, but I am copying one in no particular order or precedence, for convenience. Feel free to type in 'Tesla responds to rust' in Google for many more examples: thesun.my/motoring_news/tesla-engineer-responds-to-cybertruck-rust-allegations-BA12129484 The range of EV trucks is lower, yes - I own one - although the Silverado WT4 has already beaten the CT by over 100 miles, and that's just the fleet model. The RST is expected to do better. As my video clearly stated, CT does a comparable or worse job in almost every metric. But Tesla has been spewing misinformation for over 4 years on how it would be superior in every metric. So, sorry to be blunt, but it seems that possibly your sources might be inaccurate, not mine. And I'm just an old fart doing my best to report on EV trucks, and yes, I do make mistakes - often, and I appreciate someone pointing them out when I do. But my videos are NEVER filled with 'a lot of lies' - mistakes, sure - but lies, no. I hope this clarifies some of the data I used in the creation of this video, Zach. Thanks again for challenging some of it. Healthy exercise!

@@truckedupevs You are citing articles, but my source is that I watched the Munroe video. If you were to watch it, you would hear them discuss how the gap in the pack is for ventilation of the gases in the event of a fire. In the article you linked about rust, it says that the rust is from surface contaminants clinging to the surface of the metal. It is not the stainless steel itself that is rusting, which is consistent with how the video that went viral was debunked because it wiped right off. Additionally, the WT4 has a 70 kWh larger battery pack, and its Miles per kWh is nearly identical to the Cybertruck if you bothered to do some simple math on a calculator. So sorry to be blunt but you are clearly being Prejudiced and subjective. Now there is nothing wrong with that and i doubt you will admit it as such but the readers of the comments can decide for themselves.

@@zachmoyer1849 Thanks for the reply. We've all watched the Munro Live video, and the speculation was that the space 'might' be for venting. The key word is speculation. But then you seem to overlook the comment and direct reply from Tesla's chief engineer, and the twitter comments that include Munro, on the missing segment being above any required venting. There's also no need to be rude. Deflection attacking one's credibility without simply pointing it out with data only lessens your credibility. I do know how a calculator works, and that Silverado has a larger battery pack. - something Tesla failed to deliver on but charged a rate as if it had - and yes, that would lead to more range, which is what I'm saying, like everyone else. Funny how it will be a similar price to CT with that extra battery pack, which only further reinforces my point. As my video clearly states, the rust and the poop are primarily FUD, and the damage to the CT was from the optics, not so much the events. I refer to it as a FUD Gorge, and then later indicate that no matter how much Tesla attempts to put out the fire on the poop and rust FUD there's no hiding the fingerprints. So, I do actually agree with you in part, and yes, I - like thousands of others - including individuals who have actually purchased the CT, are disappointed. The CT is a flop in that it hasn't exceeded any of the metrics it said it would, only comparable or worse. If people are happy with flushing $100k on a truck that in no way exceeds comparable EV trucks for less $, then all the power to them. Absolutely call that biased, as it is, and as is all editorial and opinion to some degree. That's fair. Thanks again for the comment and healthy debate. However, please keep it civil. Make your point. You are obviously intelligent and passionate about what you think, but the moment a debate goes from point & counter-point to deflection or personal attacks, the credibility goes out the window - and I hit delete.

@@truckedupevs They are doing more than speculating in the video; they even mention how the system used in the Model S is not present and refer to the Cybertruck method as better. The price difference is not just due to the battery alone; the Cybertruck offers much better performance than the Silverado. They may have been trying to keep registration fees down with the Cybertruck. In my state, due to the weight of the Silverado, you will fall into a higher registration bracket, whereas the Cybertruck remains in the lower bracket. Additionally, the video you are referring to about the Silverado was conducted with a team of Chevy engineers in a follow vehicle, hardly indicative of a real-world test as of yet. They could easily be manipulating the software and risking battery health to achieve certain range numbers. As you mentioned, it's important not to believe everything you see. I will reserve my praise until a RU-vidr reviews it independently, without a support team present.

@@zachmoyer1849 All great points. However, Kyle Connor does own a Silverado WT and has done tests independent of the Chevy team. Still, that's not conclusive, and I agree that we need to see these in the real world in the hands of real owners to determine whether they truly measure up. The draw on the RST will also be much higher than the WT version due to all the bells and whistles. I hope to be one of those first adopters, being that I have an early order in, but - I imagine like my CT order before it - I'll have to wait in Canada a year or two longer than the US. The weight thing would make a heck of a lot of sense. What I'm really interested in is when Sandy and the team manage to dig their way through the epoxy-esque compound and do a full rundown on the batteries. You may very well be correct but I'm still of the mind this isn't the last we've heard of the battery contents and the actual numbers planned moving forward. Thanks for all the in-depth work here, Zach!

Talk about speaking volumes about not knowing anything: Motortrend: "MotorTrend testing shows that when it comes to real-world range, the Cybertruck hasn't advanced the game. In the MotorTrend Road-Trip Range Test, the 2024 Tesla Cybertruck Dual Motor Foundation Series covered 224 miles, or 94 miles less than its official 318-mile range."
