Omg!! I can’t believe you covered this! My fiancées father and Steve Moncuse were the ones who created this original comic! They first made it as a comic (we have the original cover) they sold it to the tv company! Sadly my father in law is no longer with us but Steve is still alive and always treasures the comic because it reminds him of the times with my father in law! However they also hated the show and wished they kept it for themselves! Lol also they actually were basing it to try and beat out the teenage mutant ninja turtles which were also hugely popular at the time! Just some extra info for you 😊

I agree with adding more "substance" like more adult themes and story telling, but for the animation,a cartoon can use a disney style even if its for adults. It dosent have to be always itty griddy, we like nice looking stuff too you know. just think of all those awesome adult european comics that have a clean edge.

I love that comic book art. I’ve never seen anything with that character design before. It’s more alien than aquatic to me.

The saddest part of this isn't even the wasted voice talent, it's the wasted animation - this is a really nice aesthetic for character designs and such. Looks like an animated film but it's a weekly cartoon show.

I actually think this style would work for adult animation. Especially now that there's a push for more adult animation. You've said it yourself, animation is a medium, not a genre. So it makes sense that we'd have a wide range of animation styles too.

I honestly adore the animation-style and art-style of the characters and environment. I would have unironically loved this show if it ever aired on TV or was a series. It gives me Animaniacs vibes (positively of course) I personally think the jokes are pretty funny! They got a few chuckles out of me. Yeah, more could've happened, but i feel like it would've picked up through later seasons oh well, i hope it gets another chance someday.
