America’s royal family, the Kardashians, are a mirror of our contemporary values. Critics may dismiss them as just reflecting the most cynical of those values, but the Kardashians are a revealing portrait of America in our present moment: they personify an All-American sentimentality for family and the family business; they espouse an individualism bordering on narcissism through their radical embrace of the selfie; and they sell a glamour ideal that glorifies work and self-invention. While Keeping Up With The Kardashians wraps up in 2021, Kim Kardashian is reported to have officially become a billionaire, and Kylie Jenner’s social media and makeup empires are taking over the world -- signaling that the power of the Kardashian dynasty will continue to morph and grow. Here’s our Take on how the Philosophy of the Kardashians reflects American ideals and why they’re such geniuses at keeping up with the culture.

I am very disappointed in you. In your last video Judas and the Black Messiah you talked about how capitalism is bad which I agree with. I'm actually astonished and disappointed that The Take didn't discuss how the Kardashian name first entered the lexicon: the OJ Simpson trial. Their father Robert was part of OJ's defense team and making god knows how much money defending a murderer. That trial is arguably one of the most influential, "American" crimes about greed, lust, sports, race, class, sex, and violence. So when Kim's tape came out, there was already so much history and intrigue baked into her namesake. It was one of the most covered trials of all time, practically made for TV. You can't talk about the Kardashians while leaving out the OJ Simpson connection, it's part of the sinister underbelly of southern California and their "American royal family" story.
@kittykittybangbang9367

Yeah. It hit me one time when I thought I sucked at makeup and then got a couple new actual nice products and realized the cheap makeup was the issue, not me. And it's expensive to stay fit, need time and money to go the gym and prepare healthy food. There were years I couldn't even really afford produce or meat. I wasn living off peanut butter and microwave quesadillas that were just tortillas and cheese. So many ways being poor holds you back. Your original premise is flawed. You state they personify the American dream of working hard and becoming successfully rich. They were already rich. They already had the necessary social connections. This continued presentation of families and people like the Kardashians as those who have striven and succeeded does more to blame the poor for their situation and ignore broader social issues such as abusive homes, drug addiction, mental and physical health problems, and a minimum wage too low for a person to survive on.

Rename the title: “Kardashians: Using Beauty as Currency”. I think the real message of this video is about how America places a woman’s value on her appearance. Since the Kardashians are the new beauty standard, they are able to be famous and rich primarily because of it. Except now the beauty standards is so unattainable without loads of money and/or surgery, even with all of the “hard work” the Kardashians and the beauty industry credits for it.

The thing I really agree with when it comes to the Kardashians is that they centered their family as part of the appeal. With Paris, there was initially Nicky, but that didn't really last for long. You can have a favorite Kardashian and now they have their children and stuff, which permanently guarantees them a dose of relevance in the future. If only a bit give or take how their popularity pans out.

This video has a confusing message. Like they've stolen everything about 'their' styles from black women, which you sort of vaguely acknowledge is bad, but then brush past it. Then I don't know if you're really trying to say it's desirable to look like them and be rich and get plastic surgery or whatever... are you trying to say that they've done bad things but there are some positive things about them? Because nearly everything said did not sound like something that people should be aiming for. Like yes of course it's great to look traditionally womanly, but it sounds like you're advocating looking womanly as 'the new pretty' in dismissal of all other body types. And maybe they do genuinely like/love/support each other, maybe they don't, but you can't assume that they do and raise them up for it based on what you see on their show and social media. I expect better content from The Take.

Correction: *looking* like you did absolutely nothing. The Kardashians have put in effort, they have built something. What they have built is harmful, but it is in fact constructed. One might even call their empire hellish: but it was made. It is a mistake to assume that they did absolutely nothing. They did a lot. They hurt a lot of people to get where they are. They made a lot of decisions. They worked. That does not make them any more ethical than say, a Paris Hilton type who didn’t. That is not the point. The point is, saying they are famous for nothing is entirely missing reality. They aren’t famous for nothing, they have in fact worked hard to build something: it’s just that that thing is a dystopian nightmare. But of course, that nightmare is merely a distilled version of our society. The Kardashians were inevitable. They also cannot be allowed to continue.

One comment though, as far as I know Kim is half armenian so it is probably not so weird of her to look a bit like a middle eastern person with or without tan since you know, it is not that far away from what is generally considered the middle east and a lot of armenians has historically lived in the middle east. There is also no such thing as a clear divide like that and a "middle eastern look" haha, some middle eastern people are more pale and some are tan. And people from the Mediterranean and general area surrounding reminds a bit of one another lookwise and are rather diverse within groups as well.
@Emma-lz1tb

If you look at what is considered "Middle East" then countries as ethnically and linguistically diverse and different from one another as Afghanistan, Turkey, Iran, Oman and sometimes even Egypt or Sudan are on occasion considered the middle east. And Armenia borders both Turkey and Iran. There is no such thing as an uniform middle eastern. The divide is not ethnic, rather very loosely geopgraphic, and it is an arbitrary line set on what we choose should be a part of it, not a definitive one set on anything measurable.

I don’t know if I missed the “ironic” take that was portrayed but this felt like a glorification of the exorbitant wealth and artificial beauty of the Kardashians, turning a blind eye to the misappropriation, the abhorrent privileges, the nature of our neoliberal society and capitalism that compounds their success while pushing the narrative that they merely “worked hard” to get there- a problematic narrative that makes the average person responsible for seemingly being ugly, poor and incompetent.

"The Take" is video was a dud. You guys passed over how this family has used black culture and fashion to get famous way too fast. When talking about how the Kardashians have a put this "womanly shape" in the limelight. Wanna guess where they got that idea from that? Black women. Wanna guess where Kyile got the idea to pump her lips to be more desirable? Black Women.

I think the appropriation aspect of their look and their appeal was not given the gravity it deserves in this video, although I enjoyed the analysis! Even the fluidity and fairness of their beauty is something Black women have long been criticized for: changing hairstyles, embracing weaves, lashes & various textures. On another note, I’d love to see an analysis of new motherhood: often outside of marriage, blended families and women with children who have different fathers - something else white women are not criticized for while Black women were/are widely and cruelly criticized for the same behavior.

Not gonna lie I find it fascinating that blonde white women are constantly calling the Kardashian look unattainable. Because a beauty standard is finally unattainable to the prior beauty and power structure, and they're not allowed to blackface anymore without criticism. The body mods as a default are whack but frankly despite deeply disliking their business and social ethos, I find their beauty standard much more attainable than the waify blonde blue eyed full white standard of yesteryear. I would argue that I've never heard a black woman call their look unattainable, but simply appropriative. I think there's more roundabout mysogynoir in the criticism of the Kardashian look than people are willing to admit.

Never understood why Kim crying after losing a diamond earring is used as an example of material greed. I'd cry too. Not because I'm obsessed with it. But it probably cost quite alot. Most people will have some form of reaction if they lost something valuable.

@@UnboxingAlyss How do you know that wasn't some kind of a weirdly expensive rare jewelry? Ps: I'm not even a fan of theirs. But this argument really doesn't make sense. Most people don't go "ahem, people are dying. So I shouldn't care about my possessions". It's hard to see it as any different because LITERALLY EVERYBODY acts like that. The people who are buying Kylie lip kits aren't sending that money to the needy, are they? It's human to be selfish like that. The middle class aspires to be the rich. The lower class aspires to survive. Most people care about themselves primarily.

The earrings were 75 thousand dollars and no she could not just get a new pair. She was also upset because the reason she lost it was because her ex Kris Humphries was being overly rough and threw her into the water. If anything, being able to say that “you should be less materialistic!!”, after losing something that expensive is the real privilege indicator 😅

@@idontevenhaveapla7224 She could pay to get it remade by a specialist. It sucks when you lose something, but they have a shit-ton of money to replace anything they lose. The majority of the population doesn't. It's find if you disagree. I really can't find any sympathy for these people.

This felt like PR propaganda. So we're supposed to swoon for making a dynasty of privilege? There's so much contradictions here in that we supposed to see them as a tight knit loving family, yet that love is often conditioned on success, and that close affection has branding advertising synergy within. They rushed over that Blac Chyna legal name court battle which feels like racial class hierarchy, as well as appropriating black beauty, fashion, and sex. This felt very hollow, dig deeper. If this was a video called "Kris Jenner, Capitalistic Love" and how she favours certain successful offspring, and encourages fame and selling off all aspects of their lives, it'd be a better video. This as it stands is as unclear as mud.

Not the most intellectual comment, but I believe it expresses a universal feeling: They make me want to throw up, I want them to go away, and they are a blight to society. Gross.

As an architecture student my comment shall be; the Kardashians are as american as Frank Lloyd Wright houses, they both find an answer to America's lack of common roots (connections) in family and they center around that, they are pretty open (not Philip Johnson Glass house level of transparent though) and overall depict the american dream.
