When he and Rinne left NHL this year. It ended one fine chapter in Finnish NHL history 1982-1984 generation had so many good players like Mikko Koivu, Tuomo Ruutu, Joni Pitkänen, Antti Niemi, Jussi Jokinen, Kari Lehtonen and Sean Bergenheim. Now the Olympic Roster will be full of players born in 90s.

Yup, there is only four finnish players born in the 80's next season. Komarov, Rask, Koskinen and Raanta, and three of those were late bloomers. All respect for the second "golden age" of finnish players, third is maybe 1996-2001, that we will see.

@@mapa6353 Yep indeed, but I think that very first generation which really draw Finns into the map of Hockey was players born in 1972-1975 consisting many legendary players like Saku Koivu, Ville Peltonen, Jere Lehtinen, Janne Niinimaa, Jere Karalahti, Kimmo Timonen, Fredrik Norrena, Jussi Markkanen, Juha Ylonen and Petteri Nummelin. Fountain head is Jari Kurri (1960) though. :)

@@Catinkontti I think 1990s and 2000s-born finnish players will be the best team they will have in the olympics, not maybe 2022, but 2026, because so many of them are still young. 2016-U20-team will be remembered as one of the most talented teams ever

Filppula belongs firmly to the category of good players. He was never great, but never bad either. When he aged, he changed his style of play to accomodate his new role as a veteran presence.

He was an absolute monster in the faceoff circle. After Tampa traded him, the teams faceoff winning percentage plummeted.

Esim aika usein kuulee että suomen jääkiekkomaajoukkue on kautta aikain parempi kuin ruotsin mikä ei nyt vaan pidä paikkaansa. Mut toisaalta ne on yleensä jotain pentuja. Itse en sanoisi että filppula on kumpaakaan noista. Ei niin hyvä että antsaisisi enemmän propseja pohjoisamerikkalais nhl-faneilta mutta silti hyvä pelaaja, ja hänestä ei todellakaan kuule niin paljon että olisi missään nimessä ”yliarvostettu”

Filpula has been one of my favorite players on Detroit. He's up there with Yzerman, Lidstrom, Zetterberg, Holmstrom and Datysuk.

I also enjoyed his time on the Flyers. He received WAY too much undeserved criticism in his years in Philly. He was getting older, played on an awful team and never got any real opportunities to play outside of the 4th line and he still adapted his game to new his role fairly well.

Very smart and reliable player. Not the fastest or most skilled, but always good. Real professional. And not a goalscorer, but still managed to deliver that secondary scoring e he went.

He made three cup appearances and won one. You don't play a role in all 3 runs without being a solid player. If he was 2 for 3 or 3 for 3 I think he wouldn't be as underrated.

I'm of course biased as a Finn, but he was one of my favourite players anyways, despite me being against the Red Wings at just about every turn. Just a reliable player who clearly loves the game, as he shows this when continuing to play in Switzerland, even if he could safely retire with far more money than I'll ever even get close to.

Before watching: nothing surprising really, players tend to outlive their prime but it says lot that wunderkin grande extortionist...or best gm at the moment stevie y brought valtteri back to red wings to teach up and coming team what it is and what it takes to succeed. Bit underrated in my native finland but when name is said ill tip my hat even if im not wearing any.

He left the wings because of babcock. Holland sticking with him as long as he did wasted the final years of datsyuk and zetterberg. They should have been a top team every year in the 2010s. But no free agents wanted to come here and play for Babs

Both brothers have mostly been in the KHL. Andrei had a brief stint in the Czech league, while Sergei played last year in the ICEHL with the Bratislava Capitals, and is playing this year in the Erste Liiga in Romania

A small personal story. Valtteri's and Ilari's (his older brother, also played pro) family live in Moscow, USSR at some point in the 1980's. My family lived there too for a time as my parents were in the trade business. As there were very few foreigners, and even fewer Finns, our families were friends for a time and I used to play(not hockey) with the brothers as a kid. Valtteri could not have been many years old. I don't know exactly what his parents did there, but I don't think they stayed longer than a year or two.

He sure was dope in Tampa and during his first stint in Detroit! Was a big part of both dynasties.The first year or two dynasty w tampa in 2015-2017 and the wings from 2005-2013. Ofc his second stint was more covid and mediocre teams than him individually. I kinda wish the Lightning had brought him back from 2019 to 2021 instead of the Wings so Filppula could've been apart of the back to back cups Tampa won in 2020 and 2021 and 3 total counting 2008 with detroit but whatever.

Valtteri made dumb decision to shift to Red Wings when he rejuvenated his career in Islanders and could’ve been part of their playoff success in last two seasons.. he instead sucked with Detroit.
