All these people think they are so clever saying he had it all and blew it. He made a mistake which he owns and doesn’t shy away from. He’s a father to his son from the relationship and did his best to protect his family from his mistake and the fall out from it.He talks about Maria with love and fondness always. He’s had his punishment by losing her and the respect of his children. He’s taken responsibility and tried to make up for it.

'great in all respects' is a myth in any relationship of significant length 'loyal' can mean not cheating but not emotionally available either - again common in long marriages. *My point is not to excuse his behavior,* but simply say that marital infidelity is far more complex than many people think. Especially in long relationships.
He did not sleep with the maid with the intent to hurt Shriver. Cheaters almost never intend to hurt anyone. They are just seeking pleasure like a fat person seeks good food. Some times they cannot control themselves, just like fat people...
I do believe that along our life we do get attracted to other people but cheating is never a smart option. The pain that is caused hunts both people down for the rest of their lives. Maria especially coming from a catholic family deserved to age with a loving husband at her side... I genuinely believe that you do not recover from such trauma. You just try to move on. at least she's a successful , educated woman, with a great career and a beautiful family and nobody can take that away from her! Not even an uneducated and ugly low class gold digger who's only achievement in life was to generate a such a big scandal.... and I think that after the anger comes the dissapointemnt, and Maria knows her self worth and just knew she had to let go of that naive marriage that only caused her sorrow.
