I had a group of 3 the other day, none of them had played a TTRPG before, and they just set about immediately stating that they wanted to try killing the nearest person this more or less continued through the session, but I did ultimately just tell them they couldn't kill anyone unless they could give a decent reason why their character would, so that helped

@@blueninja012 That is why sometimes it is advisable to start a newbie game straight inside the action. Either in a dungeon or in the wilds, where they can test their claws. Teething pains, you know how it is.

To be fair, Chad would join in with the other two, while talking the GM into accepting it by talking the players into taking this a tad more seriously for the sake of GM. We've seen what he has done with the wizard in the same party.

The wizard could also save it by killing everyone with fireball.

All of above. Also a good old 1 on 1 talk with each and every person in private about wtf they are doing. Maybe sprinkle a little oneshot in every now and then where other players have to DM to see how shitty it is to DM for a group like that

Bahaha, that reminds me of my past campaign which was Curse of Strahd but suddenly turned comedy from near the beginning because of player interactions and PC vibes. One of the first random encounters they had was a barbarian from one of the indigenous tribes, the poor guy was just hiding in the bushes and scouting before one of the PCs saw him, hid and snuck over there. He spoke in a foreign language, presumably belonging to the local tribes When the Barbarian found out, he tried to run away, but when that failed, he started his rage and tried to hold his ground and missed his first hit. Everyone started to smack him and cc him with their spells but even though he couldn’t do anything to fight back, the damage rolls were ridiculously low At about quarter hp he gave up while everybody still failed to hit him for much damage, at which point they undid their concentration and gave him hope, before promptly capturing him with nets and rope They were taking him to town as a captive, but in between some sessions, he found out they had a common enemy while they still had thought he was trying to be nice to try to get them to let their guard down He became a party NPC and then a full on PC, and it was only THEN that he finally spoke up in common. It turned out he could always speak common but found it useless to try to talk to anyone in the party, BUT ALSO means that he overheard all the dumb theories and comments the party was making about him Absolutely golden, every moment We decided to name the campaign the Sus of Strahd for how absolutely clueless yet wary every PC was

Anyone who cannot keep a backstory concise enough to at most fill half a page, is also not a person you want in your group. They can have an entire compendium of backstory they can use as a reference, but ... keep your backstory concise.

its rare that a real life person even has a 30 page backstory i always find it hilarious when people act like theres that many important things that happened in their characters past before they even STARTED adventuring. Surely it couldve been done in a page or 2💀

This is why I always tell my players this in session 0: "This campaign is about your journey through this world, so keep your beginnings humble. If your character is already a successful and powerful badass, they would probably retire somewhere warm and sandy."
