ah it already happened before, and it's most likely done by developers who overestimate themself. some game like final fantasy pubg who thinks they can disrupt pubg mobile.. gone. an apex mobile who held a beta for 2 season, got players paid for season pass, and reset the progression during opening, and shortly after close the freakin game for good. just don't play a free to play game with overconfident developers

Thats how betas used to work before people started just releasing their games from open beta like fornite was in "beta" for 4 years or valorant went from beta to full launch without downtime. If the game needs work and needs to go offline to fix problems people have been complaining about (that they have tried to fix multiple times) I think thats healthier than continuing to pump money and dev into something that is inherently going to fail because the bones of it are fucked.

Them calling this a beta is a joke, the game version changed from 0.X.X to 1.X.X a few weeks after open beta began. Not even an early access marker on steam. Imo, they left it as a safety net and would not have bothered with the downtime if the game had succeeded.

People often overlook this one very important thing, more important than Akshon listed at the end of the video: An actual different game modes. Im not talking about 1v1, 3v3 etc They need to add something to keep casuals playing the game with something else. This is what Granblue Versus Rising is remedying with the Grand Bruise minigame
@francisco65372
@francisco65372 Год назад
Agree, the casual players would always be a majority, specially if it's a fighting game because those type of games (At least from what I've seen) are easier to just drop compared to other games like Fortnite or an FPS
@E_Fig05

Brawlhalla does an okay job at this. It's got tons of side modes that are pretty distinct. Another thing is that a platform fighter only really needs side modes if the platform fighter is aimed toward casuals. If the platfighter is aimed towards core players it needs even more polish and good gameplay like Rivals of Aether.

My #1 problem with multiversus is that it's kinda hard to read as a spectator. There's a lot of status effects and cooldowns and stuff that isn't immediately clear unless you know what you're looking at. Contrast that with Smash Bros (or most other fighters tbh), where even if you don't know the game that well you can pretty much follow a match bc almost all of the information you need is pretty straightforward on the screen.

American companies and their complete utter disrespect for Asian communities is such an expected yet disappointing thing and it is also why everything they released always failed or never take off as expected. For example, Microsoft presence in Asia in null causing Xbox to die off in the region. Valve had zero thoughts about Asia that SteamDeck only became available in the largest handheld market, Japan, a year after launch and the rest of Asia still has zero access. Even when they do sell, they are selling American-oriented products with zero understanding of the market, ultimately making the products lose popularity over time. You don’t see Japan pushing weird r18 meme games that are super popular in Japan to other countries. They only sell what their country is known for in mainstream audiences. *sorry for the rant* but this behavior definitely gotta change if they cared about their products.

platform fighters just need more time to come out. whether its greedy publishers with dollar signs in their eyes or developers underestimating the time they need, platform fighters are almost always coming out unfinished and its pretty upsetting as a big fan of them. (of course that's not to say that its the ONLY problem, its just the biggest and pretty much prevalent with every release) also i should say that it doesn't make me mad because i don't like them (hell, nasb is probably my favorite platform fighter), it makes me mad because first impressions are everything nowadays, and the worse a launch for a game is the more likely that people refuse to give it another chance when it gets better also a little correction for 6:46, nakat did stop competing in the game, but he did actually join the multiversus team as a community manager, so he's definitely committed to the game

I was top 10,000 and a top 1,000 harley quin player and they did not balance that game at all and thats why I left. The hitboxes were broken and you could get killed really quickly, definitely needed more time to work on balance.
@banjo9158
@banjo9158 Год назад
@@Buddhakingpen Yep. Smash 64 was a sucess because it was revolutionary, it was the first one, and the tecnology at the time were more limited, if smash 64 released the way it did today, it would flop. but even smash 64 has advantages compared to these other plataform fighters. the classic mode is fun and better than the arcade modes of the other games, break the targets and board the plataforms are also fun modes that are unique for each character, so it has other modes besides just fighting, something multiversus doesn't even have, the game itself has a lot of charm in it's art-style, a cool cinematic intro, soundtrack is great, more stages, a proper final boss at the end of classic mode, an ending, that even though lackluster, at least is something, which all of the others don't have anything. i'm not saying smash 64 is better than those other plataform fighters, but it shouldn't even be a comparasion, no modern plataform fighter game, indie or not, should even be able to be compared to smash 64, it should be much higher, than a more than 20 years old game, from an almost 30 year old retro console.

That, and then refusing to correct specific balance issues (Jake's backpack, Harley Quinn's hitbox, or the entire character of stripe) were the reasons my friends and I stopped playing it. It started off fun, and progressively became less fun, which made it harder to forgive the issues like the lag spikes and the ridiculous monetization.

Specifically as a top 10 Garnet Main, I was more so just exhausted from lack of reward for the grind, other than literal bragging rights. I wanted the new characters to drop soon & fast, never gave a sh*t about maps. I was -patiently waiting on Joker & Godzilla, but from an obviously hyper-realistic standpoint: there was no conceivable way they could output meaningful characters with well-balanced kits that were still fresh, fun, & exciting in the expected optimal time frame to meet everyone's consumer needs. The game seemed to phantom-promise us much, but when that slowly turned into just paying for battle-passes & grinding mindlessly every event for a skin on a character I wouldn't use: it was simply too much. So long Multiversus..you brought me so much joy in that small but humbling time frame. I had an amazing time sh*tting on people with Garnet at the higher levels of gameplay. I fought Tamunokuro (arguably the #1 Shaggy at the time) during his rise to the top & even bumped into GSMVoid on his Black Adam in 2's that was thrilling. Fought a couple more of the top 5 global ranked leaderboard players since the ladder is such a small world & had the greatest time bragging amongst friend on how high up I was. But now the game is coming to a reprieve & with that, hats off to you Player First Games; I hope by the time you re-release the finished polished product in early 2024 like you advertise you will, it'll be another moment bringing all us platform-fighter lovers together once again! :)

Void & Nakat left because Nakat was hired by PlayerFirstGames to become their Community Manager. This meant he was no longer able to compete in tournaments due to that being a requirement for working for them. Void didn't want to play the game with anyone else so he hasn't entered tournaments because of this. Also, anything that players paid for whether they are skins etc are still accessible in Local play and will transfer over to the full release. As a professional commentator for MultiVersus I believe full heartedly in this game. I know it will do better once the full release happens. This "ok we got what we needed, beta's over" pivot feels like just that, a pivot. The original plan didn't work so they're trying the beta thing. I haven't kept up with the game since Marvin released so perhaps I'm out of the loop, but prior to that nothing really conveyed the idea that this game was going to be pulled at some point. There's nothing intrinsically valuable to having a wide swath of characters and in any other genre of game it would be considered gimmicky. Here’s the thing, with the licenses behind it via WB, it should NOT have been a Freemium game. Or at the very least, have a retail version/option to go with it. Other Freemium Platform Fighters usually start out Indie, and have original characters with no expectations. That itself is a blessing in disguise. The only problem Nick’s game had that this game also shared is the severe lack of extra modes, such as an Adventure, Mini Games, Items, etc. Because with Smash, despite how big it’s tournament scene is that both tried to compete with, it’s the general and casual options that keep Smash open for anyone in the long run. Just to mess around with friends be it locally or online. Even Rivals of Aether added such content over time, and that game was made with a fraction of the cost Multiverses. Not to mention having a far smaller roster, including DLC (but not Custom characters). The bizarre buff/debuff 2v2 gameplay certainly didn’t help either.

8:48 In the topic of having a strong IP This seems to be something people don't realize, but Mutiversus did NOT have a strong IP behind it. If you ask someone what do characters like Mario, Link and Pikachu have in common, you'll hear people say "they're videogame characters", more knowledgeable people will be more specific and say "Nintendo characters". If you ask them what do characters like Sponge Bob, Aang and Danny Phantom have in common, you'll hear "cartoon characters", some people will even recognize they are all Nickelodeon characters. If you ask them what do characters like Bugs Bunny, Arya Stark and Batman have in common, "Warner Brothers" is not the first thought in anyone's minds. The game has a hard time gaining a passionate fanbase because there's no identidy, the characters don't share anything other than a company that just so happens to own their rights. People are Nintendo fans, people are Nickelodeon fans, similarly, people are Looney Tunes fans, people are DC fans, no one is a Warner Brothers fan.

I think the biggest problem it faced was trying to reinvent the wheel. They took the successful platform fighter formula and then just… *changed things* for seemingly no reason, with little understanding of how it changed the feel of the game. Removing blocks and grabs? Turns the game into spam central. Taking out ledges? Now it’s either too easy or too hard to guard the stage/recover. Making the game super floaty and adding air turnarounds? Removes commitment and fluidity from the air. Taking out dashes? Makes grounded movement super noncommittal and painfully slow. Making knockback curves nonlinear, inconsistent, and floaty? Nothing has weight and every hit feels just a little bit *off*. Rivals of Aether proved you could change elements of the “smash formula” and still have a good, solid game, but the lesson unlearned by devs like those who made MV or Nick All Stars Brawl is that when doing so, you need to be *really REALLY careful* to rebalance your formula around those changes.

They didn't address enough problems in a decent timeframe. We waited too long for ranked, hitbox changes, etc etc. When we get MV back later down the line, it'll just come down to how it turns out. Back during season one which was when the player base was still healthy for a fighting game, there were five characters in season one in the first month and two in the last two months of the season. Pretty much every fighting game gets one character every three or four months, and games with the same model release one character per season. What were people expecting a new character every week?

It's difficult to articulate, but the attitude that's decided for the game is a quiet factor in longevity. Whereas Smash Bros. is a celebration of video games big and small with reverence for all its references and cameos, Multiversus was a mirror of current pop culture and memes, with jokes and trends deciding much of the roster and an imbalance of nostalgia leaving it feeling skewed. You chuckle at a meme you see on reddit, but you probably don't come back to it month after month for years to come

Some of the biggest fighting games right now like skullgirls and guilty gear xrd average 200-300 players daily, multiversus still has double the players. A fighting game having a player count above a hundred is thriving. Fighting games aren't mainstream and arent supposed to be. The issue is that developers don't realize this and constantly tries to make fighting games something its not with unreasonable expectations. Treating fighting games like fortnite or valorant and monetizing it with the expectation that millions of people will play it was the reason it failed.

I’d still agree it’s weakness was targeting too niche an audience, though. They tried to shake up the formula in ways it really didn’t need, and made a more confusing product.

I still think MultiVersus went to open beta _way_ too soon. It should've stayed on the closed alpha for at least 6 more months. It was too plagued with janky hitboxes, balancing issues and way too many glitches. Like you said, it doesn't help that Warner Bros. still pushed the competitive scene, battlepasses and other microtransactions in the meantime, which made the public perceive the game was pretty much complete already (despite them constantly advertise that it was still on open beta). All that, combined with the lack of new content on Season 2 and they making grinding even slower quickly caused the hype to die. I love Tony and PFG, they're really talented, transparent, communicative and have love for the craft and the source material, but it's clear they were given more than they can chew. It still baffles me that Warner Bros. didn't increase the budget and/or expanded the dev team, because despite their talent they didn't have enough manpower to pump content at regular basis, on top of them being unfamiliar with fighting games (as most of the PFG are former Riot employees). I'm really hoping the definitive release in early 2024 brings enough new stuff and proper optimization to reignite the hype, because I really believe that MultiVersus has a lot of potential; more than any other platform fighter that came after Smash Bros.

Oh let me tell ya, because I've been saying it since release: 1) the online was awful. You could literally lag to death. 2) the characters were way too floaty. Having 3 jumps and an up B was just too much. Every character was basically jigglypuff. 3) the dodge roll was WAY too powerful. You could stop yourself from dying by just rolling out of it. And I mean you get hit with a death smash and your flying to your death THEN you dodge roll out and save yourself. It was too broken and also inconsistent. 4) all the characters movements where somehow both unoriginal and too complicated. Things like hit boxes just didn't make any sense

I had quite a bit of issues with this game as a Smash fan, so here's a couple that you didn't mention in the video. 1. The game felt really floaty. Game feel is really important as many of us may already know, and this game just failed when it came to that. Characters would feel really unresponsive and would linger far too long in the air with little control on their descent speed. 2. Cooldowns. Some characters have cooldowns where others don't, and it feels like you're at such a disadvantage when your special ability is on CD and your opponent has no CDs. You're far too heavily punished for missing them and they don't come up often enough to warrant learning how to play around them or using them more. Having 1/4th of your kit disabled for 7 seconds feels AWFUL 3. Lack of kill pressure. It isn't uncommon for stocks to go up to 140 damage and characters surviving really solid hits and returning back to stage, recovery's waaay too strong. Unless you knock your oponent into the blast zone, it's very easy for them to make their way back up on stage. This is cause by the previous issue of floatiness (floatyness?) 4. Lack of balance. Now there's two parts to this, the lack of character balance and the lack of balance between duo and solo play. Character would be incredibly overpowered one patch, and absolutely gutted the next, it was all over the place. It was also very clear that they were focused on doubles, which is why I imagine a lot of these design decisions like low kill pressure, and floaty gameplay were made so that the doubles mode could be properly supported. The issues with that come when playing 1v1 where the game just feels really bad to play for someone who enjoys the 1v1 aspect of fighting games which is one of the genre's main appeal. Great video as always!

As a casual player, I found that the camera / character colours made the game hard to follow The camera is pretty far back and on many stages the background was as saturated as the characters. I'm def noob but all this meant the character movements were hard for me to follow. In Smash the moves just feel that much crispier. Like the attack silhouettes are very clear. It'd be as simple as increasing the amount of shadow on the characters in MVS I'll remain hopeful and see if they do indeed relaunch in 2024.

I'd played a little Smash before, but it was this game that got me to take platform fighters seriously. Then I discovered my local Smash scene around the same time that the flow of characters and updates stopped. I tried to keep going with MVS out of a sense of loyalty, but the new battle pass at the time needed so much grinding I lost motivation. I decided to focus on getting better at Smash, which I think is a game with far more depth and polish. Now I'm here, learning about the state of the game second hand through this video. I'm sad that MVS has declined so much, but I'm actually glad to hear that they're taking a hiatus. If they do it right it might just reinvigorate the player base. Put about 130 hours into the game. Bunch of friends had a lot of fun with it. On principal I don't play games that have massive amounts of FOMO. The battlepass in Multiversus is one of those things. I was going to overlook it before because I played Super Animal Royale, which it's battle passes never disappear, and you can get it whenever you want. So I never felt like I had to keep playing. Not a fan of dailies/weeklies in either game though, but it feels easier for people to not feel like they need to sacrifice IRL stuff to play the game. Them later saying "People are maxing out too fast, we're doubling the time to takes to get to level 15" really pissed me off as well. I was trying to get every character to level 15 after all. Respect the player's time! There's a reason why I don't play games that feel like they need to put a leash on you to keep you playing them. Makes the game feel insecure about how good it is, and that there's more greedy intentions. Other thing is balancing the game off of capsule hitboxes, then deciding to go to accurate hitboxes later, but still balancing based off capsule hitboxes. That's such a massive change in core gameplay, that it blew my mind. Brawlhalla capsule hitboxes work because it was designed around everyone being the same size, essentially being re-skins of each other, and everyone taking up the same space. Smash has characters of very different proportions and sizes, but Sakurai and his team knew early on that you have to make it so it fits the character's visual location. Some characters move their bodies a lot in their attacks, and that makes a huge difference. Like Wonder Woman charging up a grounded attack and leaning back and downwards before a strike, but the hurtbox not matching up sinks. Iron Giant was a huge problem, but with the capsule hurtbox method, his aerial move where he spins his legs around was a gigantic disjoint, but then they made it so his legs always can be hit, so one of his safest options to attack people was removed (and a lot of his other moves were similar to that. That's just such a massive buff/nerf to the entire cast that you're basically changing the core gameplay of every character. It shocked me so hard that they made such a huge change and made me question if they knew what they were doing. I didn't notice it earlier because I didn't really want to believe it, and figured I was being bad and that the internet was bad. After all, there have been times when fighting some players where I'll stand in the middle of the stage, and teleport off-stage. Usually not that bad, but a shocker that it happens at all, and there were smaller more frequent teleports in most matches. Out of all the fighting games I played when I took a break from smash, this was the only one that had a worse online than smash, and multiversus is supposed to be better because it has rollback! The main thing deterring me from playing smash is it's horrendous online, and if you can't do better than it on that, then you're doing something very wrong. I'm sure there's other things, but that's just off the top of my head. Also there weren't any characters that have spoken to me just yet. I wasn't really ever close with any of the warner characters so far (Iron Giant and Steven would be the closest ones to that), so it was mainly gameplay I had to go off of. Arya Stark and Batman feel great, but I prefer them for 1v1, but this game is designed around 2v2s, and it really suffers in the 1v1 department if you are not using most characters, mainly ones that aren't assassins. Which is fine in 2v2 setting since that can just be their role, but 1v1 makes it rougher for the other characters to shine. Reindog was fun, but felt a smidge too basic. Iron Giant I love because it lets my allies do whatever they want. However, when you fight people that know what they are doing, it feels hard to get any sort of move off, especially after the hurt box change. Steven Universe was a surprise and I started to have a blast with him after someone suggested him, but he's not an easy character to pick up. I didn't have enough time with him Gizmo is one character that seemed to be unanimously loved when he first game out. Strikes the balance between simple but with things to improve on, and support but being able to handle themself. I feel like if they had a few more characters that strike all the right spots like Gizmo does, they'd do well. I haven't played since Rick, Stripe, Black Adam, or Marvin have come out so I can't say anything about them. However they are all characters I don't really care about (fun shows though!) All that said, they are revamping the game supposedly, so there is a chance I could get back into Multiversus again. However, if they mess things up again, I'll probably never look at them again. I got plenty of other games. Also, Chess and Smash are my go-tos. Chess because literally everyone knows that game even if they aren't a gamer. Smash because it was the game that made me decide to hunker down to play a singular competitive video game, but it's not perfect, and I was wondering if Multiversus could overthrow it.

I played it once and it felt horrible to me from a gamefeel/control physics perspective, so I ended up never playing it again lol

The game is fundamentally just too zany. You have all these movement options and no blocking so it's just zipping around and around until you clip someone or get clipped

My main problem with Multiversus was the gameplay. It was really floaty, too floaty.

Max Dood on the matter is interesting. Basically the game was made by a small team, launched the Beta, overwhelming response by public, WB made the team to make the game working online. So now the small team had to make sure the game is running and they can't make new content.

Before Multiversus I hated playing fighting games because everything was so overwhelming compared to a shooter e.g. But the TERRIBLE netcode made me quit the game. I have SO MANY clips on my pc of me getting hit whitout being anywhere the the enemy. So if they fix that and make a battle pass where to are able to earn enough coins for a new one, I personally think that the game could get REALLY big.

Honestly the main thing that really made me drop the game is the lag it is so unplayable for me as middle east player who play in eu because we don't have server.

the thing that drove me away was actually the fact that aerials didn't stop when you hit the ground. it's an aspect of pretty much all platform fighters that just felt right and one that i wish they hadn't changed.

I think thay had way too much confidence thinking the competitive players were the majority of players instead of the casual players that just want more characters and modes to play with their friends

So mad that this game didn't succeed. I was completely ballistic at this game. My peak rank was 2,036 in 1v1s. Game could've done wonders but released ranked far too late.

We're also to blame here especially the nerfs to balanced characters because we can't seem to figure out how to beat them (characters like batman wonder woman shaggy Taz gizmo stripe Steven universe lebron James Finn and jake) and buff the more overpowered cheesy characters (like black Adam Harley Quinn Rick Morty Harley Quinn iron giant and the worst offender superman)

I forgot this existed, all I remember is the game was region locked and only available in the epic game store on launch. Last I checked on steam mind you, it was still region locked and I think right now it still isn't available in SEA

I stopped because of the battle passes and weird perk system that felt like it didn’t really fit. I want to just hop in and play with my favorite characters and not have to make a meta setup to have fun

The perks are usually inconsequential tho. You can absolutely have fun without being "meta". The fighter-specific perks are nice to choose depending on your play style they just give certain moves or passives an edge. You could just *not* use perks if you don't like trying to decide which ones are best for you

This was my favorite game. People complained about it being floaty but I actually really liked it. The dashing mechanics made it so that you could move fast despite the game being floaty, and the floaty-ness made connecting combos way easier and more satisfying. I could see where my opponent was going and dash to meet them and continue the combo. It had very good controller support so i was able to connect my switch gamecube controller to my pc and just play with that. The glitches sucked but they were slowly improving the game and new characters were being released very quickly, once every 2 weeks or so. The meta was always changing and that added an element of experimentation for me that was really fun. I honestly enjoyed this game more than smash. I'm sad that they stopped supporting it. I miss playing batman and connecting down tilt into up tilt into up special

Once you make a video about “why it failed “ or “where did it go wrong”…. It’s usually too late. At that point , it’s considered an underdog and almost no one is gonna wanna waste anything on it, until they’re very bored and it’s just there
